Well, if they get to that point, they won't have had a primary. The Democratic Party would have a hard time coming together to back a non-Biden candidate since they are an umbrella political organization housing a wide collection of different flavored turd factions all vying for power: the insider crony crooks, Communists, terrorist sympathizers, race hustlers, feminists, degenerate perverts, cop-haters, environmental fanatics, work-averse human lumps, and self-hating unamerican human scum. So, things would be messy. 

Avoiding their constituencies and having the party elders appoint a candidate may not go over very well.

Not at all.  The real immediate threat for a totalitarian government is within the current leftist establishment which has taken over all the executive branch agencies.  Trump can't really do crap because all the real power rests in the three letter agencies and they will not cooperate.   We need to defange all those organizations and put some real checks and balances in place which holds those employees accountable if they abuse the rights of citizens.  Including the DOJ with their malicious prosecutions.
