Russell Wilson trade :o

Recommended Posts

Quote

The Broncos traded three players and four draft picks (2022 and 2023) for Wilson. Denver sent quarterback Drew Lock, defensive tackle Shelby Harrison, tight end Noah Fant, along with 2022 first-, second- and fifth-round picks and 2023 first- and second-round picks.

So presuming Russell Wilson is cut, his deal will have cost the Broncos $124 million for two years, when he was already under contract for those years at the time of the trade for $51 million (a $73 million raise).

Plus 2 first round picks, Drew Lock & Noah Fant.

The Saints will receive the Broncos' 2023 first-round pick (No. 29 overall) and 2024 second-round pick for Sean Payton and the Saints' 2024 third-round selection, sources told ESPN's Adam Schefter.

I’m shocked they are even 7-8, unfortunately Payton probably deserves the credit for getting the ship somewhat upright.

Lock & Fant are average at best players.

Still players.  In a vacuum they could have traded Lock or Fant for very late round picks.  Instead they traded them plus picks and handed the bag to a declining QB they are already over.

Not like Fant or Lock were earning a ton of money and they just wanted to dump their contracts.   Seattle actually gave Fant the 5th year option.

Worse than the vikings trade for Herschell Walker or the packers trade for John Hadl?

Maybe the Bears can use that firepower to trade for Russ

If I’m Chicago I’m rolling the dice on one of the draft QBs and restarting the WB salary clock or loading up on players around Fields - I still think he is decent.

Yeah they have to draft one of the 2 top guys.  They aren't good at it but they have to.

You don't roll with Fields when they are sitting with the picks they will have in what is supposed to be a good QB class.

The Bears messed up, they should of tanked. At one point they were in position to draft Caleb Williams and Marvin Harrison Jr.

That would of been insane!

Hard to tell pros to tank I guess. They can still get two great players.

One more year of Fields cheap right? I’d keep him and build around him but I also don’t watch them just see the stats.

From afar the few games I have watched it seems like the Bears don’t use him well.

Not sure if he doesn’t know how to read defenses isn’t doing what he’s supposed to etc.

I certainly think he can improve somewhere else.  Hes dangerous.  Hes one semi rolled ankle from being obsolete.   I will say his coaching snd cast may suck a bit.  DJ Moore is a good wr.  But you can say that about many crap qbs around the league.

He hasn't progressed much as a passer.  Just look at his stats.  His % is never good.  He hardly throws for any yards.   He takes sacks all the time.  And they play a 4th place schedule.

This all said, I am fully aware Fields will put up one of his few great games in week 18 vs the Packers and bump them from the playoffs.

Is anyone giving Wilson starter money in 2024?   He should have restructured.

I believe Russ still gets 39 mill guaranteed next year.  They will be cutting him to avoid the following years guaranteed money.

I saw a report the Broncos asked him to renegotiate to lessen that hit in late October and Wilson refused

From what I understand is they wanted him to get rid of the injury clause.

I don't think they really want him.  They just didn't want him to get hurt and have to pay him.

Broncos are a silly organization with a silly owner.

I think Payton is a tad overrated.  Had virtually the same career as Mccarthy and MM was labeled a goof and Payton a genius.   But their best case is to just let Sean do it all and thr owner step out of putting his 2 cents in.

What a ridiculous botching of their organization.   Trade and give a big extention to a declining QB that used to make plays with his feet.  Trade picks for a coach whos system doesnt fit Russ.  Fire Hackett last year.  Then decide it was all a mistake and take on huge money and lose so many draft picks.  Hilariously bad.

Trade several picks for a guy.  Give him a 5 year extension.   And he won't play a down on the extension.

What are they really getting for Wilson on the open market? Nobody is crazy enough to take on that salary for a less than average quarterback. And then The Broncos are still without a quarterback.

They are releasing him.  Probably as a post june 1st cut to save on the money they take on.

I don't think they will. What are they going to do for a QB? They aren't in a position to draft one and nothing is available via free agency.

They are. Lol.

What do a lot of teams do for QBs each year?   Stidham probably won't be that far off from Russ.

Browns have Joe Flacco slinging it for 300 yds.

What do you mean?  They would desperately hold onto Russ to lock down 7 win seasons?  Lol

I agree, he needs to go but they still need a QB. And don't give me Flacco or Stidham. Those are sample size guys, not NFL starters.

The transaction will result in $89 million in cap charges, arising from money already paid and his 2024 fully-guaranteed compensation of $39 million. The Broncos can either take the entire hit in 2024, or they can designate Wilson as a post-June 1 release and limit the cap charge to $35.4 million in 2024 and $53.6 million in 2025.
