Dave Chappelle's Netflix special goes viral for blunt transgender comments

Recommended Posts

Chappelle faced backlash from the left for jokes deemed 'transphobic' in his 2021 Netflix special, 'The Closer'

In "The Dreamer," which debuted December 31 on the platform, Chappelle addressed the previous controversy while doubling down on his opinions about the transgender community.

In one story in the special that's gone viral on social media, Chappelle recounts when he visited Jim Carrey on the set of his 1999 movie, "The Man on the Moon." Carrey employed a "method" approach to portraying real-life comedian Andy Kaufman by remaining in character at all times, and Chappelle was told by the crew to address Carrey as "Andy" when he met him.

"I wanted to meet Jim Carrey and I had to pretend this n---a was Andy Kaufman all afternoon. And he was clearly Jim Carrey," he remarked. "I could look at him and I could see he was Jim Carrey. Anyway, I say all that to say that's how trans people make me feel."

Jim Carey sounds like a complete doosh. Treating a fellow comedian like that. Fock that guy.

Sounds like that was his process for acting. Wasn’t anything personal.

IDK, Carey is a mental case and he encapsulated himself into the role of another comic who was a complete mental case.   He did an amazing job in the role, but it was a recipe for disaster.

Your take on this is very dooshy.  Like I said , Fock that guy. Would he tell his doctor to address him like that? Sends some underling over to inform DC like he’s some random person , not a contemporary?   Did he demand the same when he was fire Marshall bill or Ace Ventura? Figures a doosh would defend it.

Nope. Doosh move. You can shake the guys hand and give him a few minutes, and then go back to being the delicate genius.

This is an actor thing - method. It does seem odd but is not unusual. To your point that he was going from Ace Ventura to trying to do a serous role seems difficult.

You should try acting and get back to us how it works.

I know what it is. So you talk to your kids in role? The waiter? I don’t think so. He was being a pretentious dik. Plain and simple.

From what I have read they do it on set. Al Pacino for Scent of a Woman had people walking him around like he was blind.

Please post for us a 5 minute speech as Andy Kaufman and let us know your process 😂

I think Chapelle will be just fine.  I watched the special the other night and laughed a bit.   The stuff on trans people was on par with his other two.   I thought maybe between his special and the new Gervais stand up, the handicapped community would be upset, but maybe they can take a joke better?

DDL the exact same way, but worse - he will do it for years.   Pretty sure I read he had people carrying him around set while doing My Left Foot.

Honcho and generalpimple did not take it well. So no, the handicapped didn't take it well.

I get that it’s weird but whatever they need to do to get it done why do I care. It’s a pretty strange way to make a living.

Yeah, I bet if someone came to talk about financing his next movie he would insist on being addressed as Andy. GTFO.

Pretty much my take.  I am selfish, so if the finished product is worth it and I don't have to deal with it...  :dunno:

I haven’t watch this latest one dope. I typically like Chapelle but he’s def lost some of his fastball IMO. To be expected in this field.

I like the last couple, but he seems to lean more towards having something to say and uses some jokes to say it vs. focusing on telling jokes - if that makes sense.   He has a very unique style, but I find others more consistently funny now.

I agree. He’s got a lot more sections where he is just giving opinions rather than doing bits. I am not even sure if I have watched all these Netflix ones he’s done but have enjoyed the ones I watched for the most part, just not as hilarious as the early stuff IMO. A tough job.

He’s getting generational money with each one so he doesn’t give a fock both of which I think show in these specials.

I think that's a fair observation.   It happens with a lot of people when they get to the tippy top.  It's hard to sustain that level of quality when you have more money than you know what to do with, get old, and have a family.   Stand up is an odd process, and I could see not wanting to do the grinding as you tweak the material too.

I still laugh a lot at all the comedians I would put in this bucket now - Gervais, Chappelle, Rock off the top of my head.   Still some 🤣 moments, but also more time in between laughs for me as I watch.

I’d say it’s impossible for a comedian to stay the same throughout their career. Would be kind of weird honestly.

Similar to musicians, IMO.   Hard to do the same thing over and over - I mean how do you NOT let your life, money,  and experiences trickle into the material for better or worse?   They are not the same people they were 2 decades ago.

The only people who don't are the grumpy old Geek Clubbers b1tching about there being no good music to listen to since Dokken.

I watched it last night. It was just OK - definitely not Dave’s best but I laughed a few times. There were a handful of trans and disabled jokes that weren’t offensive but also not that funny. Nothing to get worked up about.

Id give it a B-. :dunno:

Haven't watched this one.  But thought his last couple were solid.

If it was any other comic that may be heading over the hill, no one would say anything or care.  It is quite clear media and people are bashing his decline as a cloak for having a problem with his subject matter.   Any other comic without trans jokes wouldn't get a mention here, in rolling stone or any other "medias".  They would slowly fade into the night.

So he is sorta winning.

I’m a longtime fan of Chapelle dating back to his show. There are no doubt people bashing his show because they don’t like the subject matter. There are also people defending him only because they like trans jokes.

But his new show is objectively not that funny.

I find it interesting that prior to this event he had actually used jokes against many groups.....but apparently the transgender group cannot be joked about.  Something he likely understood before he did it, but then again he also he shown that he won't prostrate himself to the mob, so he is seemingly holding firm to his principles.

I guess I still disagree here.  I laughed at the Jim Carrey opening and at the paraplegic at the orgy bits

It was watchable but not up to his usual standards. Pains me to say it cause I’m a fan, but Chapelle has lost his fastball.

This tells you a lot of what you need to know.  This was his last one before The Dreamer.

The special received mixed reviews from critics. On Rotten Tomatoes The Closer has an approval rating of 40% based on reviews from 10 critics, and an average rating of 6.20 out of 10.[23] Some reviewers pointed out that while the special received poor ratings from professional critics,[24][25][26][27] The Closer had a 96% positive audience score on Rotten Tomatoes

Im not exactly trying to make this political.  But it is quite telling when left and rights together were fans.  Now after subjects the left doesn't care for, the only people (or vast majority) that now say this are all left leaning people or liberal 2 cent vanity fair bloggers.

Ironic.  Maybe it is just coincidence.
