California's $20 Fast Food Minimum Wage Law Is Already Having Disastrous Unintended Consequences

Recommended Posts

And yet when given the opportunity to kick the governor out of office, they keep him in,  great job voters.  Keep voting for the crap, and crap is what you will receive.  Amen.

Thanks.

These jobs were not supposed to be sustainable careers, they are starter jobs, mostly for teens and the poor to build upon.  SMH, the road to progressive hell is paved with good intentions.  :(

When you pay a Mook $20 an hour to flip burgers, then you have to pay a waitress/waiter $35 an hour, then a laborer $45 an hour, then skilled laborers $55 an hour, then a store manager $70 an hour, then ...........

This they don't understand, FAIL

OP links to a horribly biased article by Reason, which talks about "dumb wage laws" and "Gullible leftists" if you had any doubt about the objectivity of this piece.

Fock off loser.  As if any of your Leftist approved sources aren’t biased.

What in the story is inaccurate? It is an epic fail, it was a dumb idea that's backfiring like we said it would.

Pedocrats are such dumb little Cultist robots.

The article linked to is an opinion piece. I'm not saying there aren't consequences....but an opinion piece isn't support- and it ends with an advertisement for the person's competition he ran.

It's misleading because the job losses are largely related to delivery drivers and automation, both of which started before the min wage hike.

Perhaps it is poor writing in the study mentioned in "No. 1" but the article linked to the Hoover Institute states this: " Total private employment in California declined just 0.2 percent during the same period, which makes it tempting to conclude that many of those lost fast-food jobs resulted from the higher labor costs employers would need to pay."

That is kind of wishy-washy in assigning blame

So if it's not the $20/hour, why are so many closing? It's not just fast food, it's small locally owned, fast food, chains, across the board restaurants closing. Hundreds of them.

Why? Especially when the economy is doing so great.

If they’re small locally owned restaurants the $20 wouldn’t apply to them

Typical pos Leftist BS - you don’t like the obvious conclusion to a bad policy - just attack the source.  These human pieces of excrement aren’t worth debating.

generally speaking, the restaurant industry has a very low profit margin.  finding qualified labor was a nationwide issue prior to both covid and this increase to minimum wage in CA.

the dramatic increase in food cost is also a major factor in their success rate.

I don't know about California, but locally in NJ restaurants have been suffering due to increased food costs and lack of workers.

About as mature as the responses from you and the other Tards in all these threads.  Seriously.  It’s obviously an opinion piece.

And that's not the only people I mentioned in my post.

But if we have a lack of workers, isn't employment up?

I’m not sure if I was understanding your post correctly.  It reads to me as though your question was rhetorical and you thought the $20/hour was the reason.  Is that not what you meant?

Do you mean unemployment?  Unemployment is very low.  Specifically with restaurants, lots of restaurant workers quit during and after covid.  I don't think they have fully recovered.  Lots of places around here still have signs up saying they're understaffed and asking for patience.  One of my daughters has been trying to get a restaurant job but she's always told she doesn't have experience or they want her to work past August when she has to go back to school.  Lots of openings but they won't hire.
