If call homicides being classified as something other than homicide, then yes. You can’t “cover up” a dead person, but you can certainly take liberties in its classification.

What would a homicide be classified as other than homicide?

Undetermined for a final result, and “pending” is always a good choice to carry you through until another undetermined won’t raise eyebrows.

I imagine cases sit as undetermined or pending for a long time before they have any actual evidence.

Yes, and cases are prioritized, obviously.  A murder with no witnesses, no real community outcry, and no leads can sit for a long time. Lots of big cities get less than 50% of murders closed.

Unsolved murders are still classified as homicides.

Should they be?  Yes.  Are they?  Not always.

A couple years ago, it would have been called a coovid death.

Why is it necessary for the US Surgeon General to label gun violence as a public health emergency if the murder rate is “plummeting”?
“People want to be able to walk through their neighborhoods and be safe,”  he said.

FBI stealth edits crime rates from 2022.  While this update doesn't cover the time frame this thread was started about, it pretty much shows you can't trust the FBI stats from any time frame during the Biden administration, just like all the other stats that are constantly revised for the worst:

This may come as a shock, but this article and the right wing puppets talking about this on x are conveniently leaving out that apparently part of the reason for the % change increase in 2022 is that they also revised the 2021 number DOWN (edit: so you are wrong that they are constantly revised for the worst)

Wow Democrats really don't want the truth to be told.

Dem voters are so easily manipulated. It's really sad..

And Trump was right, the FBI falsified the numbers. Yet he was fact checked by some weasel.

I’m not sure what specific Trump comment you’re referring to.  If it was about 2023, if 2022 numbers were increased, then the decrease in 2023 would be even larger.

Nothing false here regardless of whatever Tweets hackboy posts.  Are you disputing the changed data from 2022?

The revised 2022 rate went up by 2% compared to the old 2022 rate, not exactly earth shattering

It’s false that the numbers are “constantly revised for the worse.”   Will you admit you were wrong about that?

Oops. We forgot to report 1699 murders from 2022.

But seriously, trust our numbers for the rest.

Lol.

Still waiting on your thread with the 2023 update to the crime victimization survey

@Timhauck isnt advocating for surveys. Shannon thinks this is an own, a gotcha.

Crime data is messy, but of all the options the NCVS is by far the most reliable because it mostly takes out the biggest flaw in police and FBI tracking data. Silence. Prosecutors and judges are such menaces to society now that the number of people that dont report crimes has skyrocketed. I mean 30% of the people that get their car stolen just move on with their life now.

I assume you’re referring to @RaiderHaters Revenge as “Shannon” here? He’s the one doubting the survey, I’m just saying if he thinks he’s trying to make fun of me, he’s really trying to make fun of you.

Actually I have previously stated it has a decent methodology.

Since you’re the second person to bring this up, I looked up the quote in question.  Trump said “crime is through the roof.”  This is largely irrelevant to the recent updates, which were to 2021 & 2022 (with 2022’s updates in particular being pretty minor), not 2023, so if anything there’s now a bigger decline in 2023 vs 2022.
