Why is nothing being done to address public school attendance crash?

Plenty of poor kids overcome that obstacle.  Don't be that guy.

What was incorrect about what he said?  The absenteeism issue is worse for poor folks.  And poor folks are less likely to apply for charter or private schools, even if it’s free.

Mmm I think I’ll pass on believing that,  if it’s free, I think they would want to jump on.  Amen.

God bless.

Thanks

Can we blame the parents or is that racist?

What will more truancy officers do?

Charter schools are already free, and it’s mostly non-poor folks utilizing them.

Track down kids that aren’t coming to school. Pick em up and bring em to school. Threaten parents with consequences if they don’t get their kids to school.

It’s just one idea. I’d probably prefer a public education campaign (social media ads, billboards etc) but could be coupled with more truancy officers or other ideas :dunno:

So you force a bunch of kids who don't want to be in school to sit there all day.

That is your plan?

Let me ask you. Do you think those kids will be a net positive, negative or natural in that class room?

Yep, because it’s compulsory education.

I see and as for the second part of my question? Have you even thought of those ramifications?

Because I can tell you there are major problems you'll need to address first.

Like what?? What do inner City Hood Rats care?

What are you going to do, take away their Obama Phones, welfare or free healthcare? They don't care about their Kids.

Hell, our Government can't track down a bag of coke in the Whitehouse. They sure aren't going to prosecute bad parents

The second part of your question is entirely irrelevant, and therefore stupid, unless you’re suggesting we don’t require compulsory education anymore?

I mean, I guess that’s one take.

How do you think that plays out?

More partisan nonsense from you.

Yes, parents are the main problem.

But that simply identifies the issue. You’ve proposed no solutions whatsoever.

But that won't happen because Democrats will claim it's racist. Am I wrong?

One of the reasons I don’t send my kids to government school is that they have lowered the standards for teachers so much. Some of them can’t even grasp simple stuff like supply and demand. It’s sad.

I would never let my Kids anywhere near a Public School. It's a horror show at best.

Quickly scanning the OP, it's hard to tell how much of the decline is from truancy vs. kids being home educated or going to charter/private schools.

But I agree that if truancy is up, that is a problem that should be addressed.  I don't know exactly the answer, but society is not better off with underprivileged kids NOT going to school.

@Strike and others have a good point that many of us said in 2020 that closing schools, and subsequently for so long, was a ginormous tragedy of a decision, with long-lasting, probably irretrievable consequences.  Unfortunately, we continue to be proven correct.

Putting on my conservative hat, I'll say that we've created a hedonistic society where people do whatever feels good, which for parents is taking the easy road of not pushing kids into school, and for kids is, of course, not going to school.  There are increasingly fewer ramifications for bad behavior, reference most pro-terrorist riots these days.  And the Left is more than happy to give out more and more entitlements, so why work to not get them?

Our society is morally broken, and no increase in truant officers is going to address that.

Wait....There are people that think having millions of extra people in the country doesnt reduce housing supply?

I see idiot liberals suggesting that having boomers downsize will create substantial relief, but then also argue that 20 million people just live outside the marketplace in magic bungalows.

Yes there are. Right in this thread. They also think Disney not being able to sell their movies in China has no impact  on their bottom line.

Oh ok. Did you hear that Trumps father got sued for not renting to black people or some such when Donald was still in college but that makes Trump a racist?

I don’t want to derail Worms’ thread, but I said they’re not “driving up rent prices nationally.”   Sure, when you look at only those that aren’t living on the streets, in shelters, in airports, otherwise mostly empty hotels or staying with friends or extended family that were already here, there’s some impact to overall housing supply.  But the only meaningful impact on rent prices is going to be in small border towns.  Many small or mid-size metros don’t have many recently arrived illegal immigrants at all, and the ones that can actually afford rent in a larger city are barely a blip and likely living in places that the overwhelming majority of renters in that city don’t want to live in anyway.

I do think we should be more strict on who we allow in.  I just don’t think they’re having an impact on rents nationally.  If it were, then the cities with the most illegal immigrants would have consistently seen the highest increases in rent in the Biden era and that’s not the case.

The ones that are missing school are usually the ones that are the biggest troublemakers that don’t want to be there anyway…. With them out, class sizes are smaller and have the kids that want to learn, which makes the administration and teachers happy…

I don’t see what that’s got to do with the subject of the thread.

Unquestionably it is due to Covid and schools being closed or scaled back.

Was that a good idea? Probably not. Worth remembering for the future.

But the question is, what do we do now?

How many schools were closed for 2 years?  (Read: Did not reopen until March 2022)?

First off, let me say that I completely agree with your premise of this thread.  Things need to change, but actually enforcing rules we have historically had would be a start. But that won’t happen.

Now here comes the “partisan” part. The problem with enforcing these rules is that it’s counter to the progressive shift in education. The idea of what public school should actually be, has shifted too far left.   Enforcement of rules, grading methods, parental involvement, and attendance are all seen as regressive and contradict things like restorative justice, LGBTQ initiatives, and critical race theory. Large scale societal changes must take place first before we see change in schools. These mentalities were here pre-Covid, but idiots like Randi Weingarten have gone full throttle on stupid.

Here’s an article from yesterday with a few ideas:

https://www.yahoo.com/news/amid-nationwide-struggle-rebound-school-035900249.html

-add health clinics to schools so kids don’t have to miss full days for appointments

-expand extracurricular activities, field trips, hands-on activities and career-readiness programs

-reduce bullying so kids aren’t scared to go to school, but also have a virtual option
