Patented Phil

Football is becoming unwatchable

Recommended Posts

The 💩play on the field, nfl hasn’t been watchable for a very long time , they changed the game way to much, if it wasn’t for ff I wouldn’t even care if the game was still around.

The helmet socks really underscores how wussified the game has become.

Guardian cap?  That even sounds gay.

〽️

The ruling on the play stands. The NFL is wonderful and is even more enjoyable when flags fly every other play. Ten Yard Penalty. Patented Phil loses a timeout.

〽️

Unsportsmanlike Conduct. Taunting. Weepaws. Fifteen yard penalty. Automatic First Down

〽️

Encroachment, Death. Five Yard Penalty. Repeat First Down.

〽️

Holding. Horseman Ten Yard Penalty. Repeat First Down.

〽️

Touchdown is waived off. We have Offensive Pass Interference CDub. Ten Yards from previous spot.

This is so exciting :bench:

People have been saying this for a long time yet it remains the most popular sport in the nation and continues to spread across the world.

There were an odd number of fake calls last night, it is also notable that the officials were working pretty hard against the Ravens during the Chiefs game as well.

You’re right but so is OP. The quality of the game has declined, but the league doesn’t care because they’re printing money anyway.

What is the league suppose to do though?  The league has been forced to make the game safer which leads to more flags.

I watched exactly two games this week.  One a backup OL was immobilized and carted off to the hospital, never heard how that turned out.  Last night Chris Godwin broke his leg.

It's a dangerous game, no way around it.  How many injuries are all these penalties preventing exactly?  Helmet to helmet against a defenseless QB or WR, fine.  The stupid new kickoff rules, NO.  It's gone way overboard.

There are some injuries that can't be prevented and some that can.  The league has to try otherwise they risk lawsuits by the players.  I think it's done in order to protect themselves.

What's wrong with the kickoff rule?  I don't see why people are so bothered by it.

This is where I’m at. And a lot of the flags aren’t even related to hits anymore, it’s nonstop ticky tack holding and PI calls. Plus the reviews of every TO or scoring drive slowing the game down.

Also, a league that’s concerned about player safety should have a 17 game schedule or games played every week on 3 days rest or in foreign countries.

I would like to see a new rule where flags get picked up if what happened did not affect the play.  This would help with holding and block in the back calls a lot.

Yep and this year there is a dramatic drop in passing from the past decade plus. Most games are just garbage and unwatchable.

Still better than Baseball.  Woof.

True. That's been unwatchable for over 30 years. When the marlins bought a title, I was already on my way out.

Doesn't take away from the fact the QB play is garbage and so is coaching. The 80s 49ers would mop the field weekly with any team out there. 20+ point beatdowns weekly. The easy fix is enforce the rules of the defense not being able to mug WRs. Pull on the jersey as the WR brakes away from the DB, throw the flag. In the rules, that is a penalty but they don't throw the flag like they need to to stop it. A few weeks of just firing flag after flag would fix it. Would be bad for a few weeks until the smart teams adapt. You will always have CLE sucking (because they had a #1 QB and blew it badly) along with the jets and a few others.

Receivers are never defenseless.  They do not have to go across the middle, their coaches send them across the middle.  First defense is don't call those plays.  Their second defense in going across the middle is their QBb. wo can elect to not throw it to a receiver who will be vulnerable.  It use to be that defenders were allowed to intimidate.  No longer.  defenses litereally have to back away from intimidation when the offense is foolishly aggressive.

As for blocks in the back, I say legalize them.  It would increase returns, which are always exciting, and would speed up the game.  Its simple really, football is a contact sport, a colision sport, keep track of the men around you.  If that slows down some coverage guys as they have their heads on a swivel so be it, slowing them down may reduce injuries.

Roger G is a turd. I gave up my season Saints tickets after my father and I had them for thirty five years. The game is decided on the field, but the zebras who need glasses can alter a game with three bad calls. I barely watch anymore.

So I did some research and it’s not my imagination. The rate of penalties per play is way up this year - over 19% increase over the last 15 years average.  Two trends are at play:

1. There are fewer plays per game

2. There are more penalties overall

That’s a very bad mix from a viewer perspective.  The NFL needs to figure this out.  People have zero attention spans today, and it’s maddening to see a great play overturned because an overly officious ref called a highly subjective holding penalty on a player who was 15 yards away from the action.  If a die-hard football nut like me is starting to lose interest, it ain’t good.

I did not watch either of the games last. Night. Not a play. Unheard of just a few years ago. They still own my Sundays, but not all of them.
