Tankless water heater?

my water heater is leaking so I need to replace it (got a good 16 years out of it)

so I am looking at these tankless ones, and the thing looks pretty good

however, installation???

That's about all we have down here in the South. They're great and easy as hell to install. I just installed a couple at the Ranch House. 

What's nice is that it's hot water on demand. You'll never run out and it only runs when calling for hot water. They are extremely efficient.

You can install it yourself. I can install a full water heater with soldered connections in a few hours. Insanity.

I have time. I'll install it for free. It will most likely result in your house being flooded and possibly burned down but I can give it a try. 

I can manage to get by on some things, but I do not even trust myself on doing what some consider simple stuff. No chance even that I'll do anything on my car other than change the oil.

I plan to get one soon. From what I read, the difficulty of the installation depends on your house. I forget if it had to do with the wiring and/or water. It could be no problem or a big deal.

I'm interested in this topic as well.  The OP listed a gas heater, but we don't have gas.  If you don't either, you likely need a 220V run to the installation point.  We did this under our kitchen sink during our remodel a few years ago, but we haven't installed it yet.  Our (read:  my wife's) complaint is that the kitchen sink is on the opposite end of the house from the standard heater, so it takes 2 minutes for hot water to get there.  

Honestly, the only reason I haven't installed one is that they generally seem to take up a lot of space under the sink.  If anyone has recommendations of heaters that don't take up too much space, I'd appreciate it.

Look into this very very very carefully.  Tankless water heaters require electrical draws most homes dont have.  You could easily burn your house down if you dont adjust for that.

Exactly why I just put in a new 50 gallon standard water heater last weekend instead of a tankless. Took less than an hr and was only 520 bucks. I'll be good for about 10 years with this hard azz Arizona water.

No they don't. Mine are 115v and  require only a 15 amp breaker. Equivalent to a lighting circuit.b

Have you checked to see how much would it cost to replace the old one with a similar conventional heater ? Unless you weren't satisfied with the old one's ability to provide hot water, $4,298.00 is a lot of $.

From the little bit of research I did, it doesn't look like they last that much longer than conventional, and there can also be substantial maintenance costs.

Your thread got me thinking about my water heater. I figured it was around 15 years old. Was shocked to look up the work order receipt & find it was installed on April 17, 2001.

It's a state select "the experts choice, made in the USA"

Looks like they still make them and they're still made in the US. The total cost including removing the old water heater was $327 !!

I have made commercials, install videos and others for a company that makes tankless water heaters, so Im not an expert and I'm getting my information from their marketing-but everything I've seen says they use less energy.  They aren't storing and constantly keeping water hot---it's on demand. 

Again-I'm just working for the marketing people-but generally there has to be some truth in advertising.
