Critics slam ‘Snow White’ as film on track to be lowest Disney live-action remake in studio’s history

How did Disney get so stupid?

Walt Disney Studios’s new "Snow White" film is having a tough opening weekend.

Not only is the film projected to have the lowest opening weekend among the studio’s live-action remakes so far, the movie is getting bombarded with bad reviews. 

The film, a retread of the original 1937 animated classic, currently has a "rotten" 44% critics score from movie review aggregator site RottenTomatoes.com. Though audiences appear to have a more favorable view of the movie — the audience score sits at 74% — mainstream film critics have savaged the movie.

The New York Times’ chief film critic Manohla Dargis summed up her impressions of the film, saying it’s "neither good enough to admire nor bad enough to joyfully skewer; its mediocrity is among its biggest bummers."

Kyle Smith at The Wall Street Journal wrote, "Gloss prevails over heart in nearly every scene, and plot beats feel contrived," and The Boston Globe’s Odie Henderson lamented, "I had high hopes that ‘Snow White’ would make me happy. Instead, this dopey remake made me sleepy and grumpy."

I read something on this that the one popular dwarf moaned that he doesnt like dwarfs playing dwarfs or something?  So they did CGI?  

Lol how does that work?  Imagine if an Italian complained not liking how they depict Italians in any one of 1000s of movies over time.

It alienated a lot of people because of the leads stupid comments regarding the whole premise of Snow White.   So that started it off poorly.  But then it comes out and happens to be a bad movie as well.   So yeah, not gonna be very successful.

"Snow White" opened in the U.S. and Canada to $43 million in ticket sales.

The movie grossed $44 million overseas for a total global debut of $87 million.

By way of comparison to other recent live-action Disney adaptations, "The Lion King" in 2019 made $191 million in its opening weekend domestically, and "Beauty and the Beast" in 2017 earned $174 million in its first weekend in the theaters, Forbes reported.

Uhm, it cost 270 million at the end of 2023 - that was what was reported BEFORE they did reshoots and new dwarf CGI work.  Experts say it's probably closer to $330 million of it's PRODUCTION budget.  That's with marketing NOT added in, so add in another 100 million on top of that.

Looks like disney smartly backed off heavy marketing for this.  Must have seen the final edits and realized it wasnt good.

Why would they think spending $250m on a live action of snow white was a good idea in the first place? I don't understand the thinking.

A lot of live-action movies do okay, so long as they follow the source material and stop race-swapping characters. 

I bet this would have done well if they had a nice white girl in the lead. One who actually loved the original story and didn't sh1t all over it like Rachel Z did. It would also take writers who don't push their wacked-out political beliefs into the story.

This movie could have launched the new wave of Disney. Instead it's a huge money loser and more proof that woke makes you broke.

I'm willing to bet Disney still learned nothing.

We enjoyed it...I went in ready to hate it and tear it up as a conservative.

It was good...decent songs...good story...good laughs.

Changing Snow White and still calling it Snow White is like changing It's a Wonderful Life and still calling it It's a Wonderful Life. 

Even the idiots who did a black version of The Wizard of Oz were smart enough to rename it different from the original.

And no one cares about the 1937 cartoon including "...and the seven dwarfs".

This one should have been called Dirty Snow Chick and the CGI Runts.
