Dog car traveling question...

Recommended Posts

Going to be heading to my daughter's master's graduation in May and the dog will becoming with us on the car trip...  She is a very nervous and anxious mutt, with a majority of her being an American Staffordshire Terrier...  We have been looking into backseat hammocks with a hard base, but can't decide on it...  Does anyone have any experience in these for their car?  She is around 50 pounds and as I said, gets very anxious and nervous when in the car on short trips around town...

I have looked at ratings and always read the one-star reviews to see what pissed people off and that just is deterring...

Any help would be appreciated...

TIA

How far are you going? We travel from Florida to MA every 3-4 months with our dog. We used a hammock before but we found we like a seat cover with a pillow and blanket. Our guy wears a harness and use a seatbelt tether, he can move around but keeps him in place. We also use an Orvis dog seat extender behind the front passenger seat.

Our dog  looks like a black lab but is a 50/50 golden retriever & American Staffy. Tried 2 different dna companies and both came back 50/50 pure on both sides. Crazy for a rescue dog that looks like a black lab.

It’s 300 miles and a little over five hours without the animal…. When we go to PetSmart or someplace close, she is in a full pant and almost hyperventilating breathing…. She will still look out the window and stuff but a 5-6 hour drive like that would be very mean to her…

We tried a bed last time and she used it once for about 20 seconds until I had to stop…. Also one of us is back there with her, which is why we are thinking some kind of hammock…

Dog sitters work.   Keep the mutt where it belongs, at home.

Have you looked into boarding her locally? My folks take their dog everywhere but when it doesn't make sense, like a long trip,  they board her.

Granted, they know and trust the place and only do it if they have to but it's an alternative. Might be better than keeping her in a car, depending on how hot it will be in May where you're heading.

Sort of surprised that you like dogs.

He's got a dog and is completely out of his league on how to deal with it. He needs advice from a fantasy football website to function in life.

All that tells you about the guy is that he's a complete idiot. There are plenty of them out there. Unfortunately.

Why take a nervous and anxious dog on a trip where it is likely to be nervous, anxious, and therefore opotentially problematic in its behavior?  Why take it where it will encounter numerous people its behavior may offend or even potentially harm?  Seems boarding, either professionally or with a friend or family mermber is the play here.

The only time you move a dog like that is if you are moving for good. And then you get a doctor's help with it. Not from a stranger on a website.

The dogs i have known have all been good travelers in cars, boats, canoes and rafts excepting one.  That dog benefitted greatly from the Tunder Coat. Knowing a dog is not going to enjoy a trip I would find another option, but that is me.

He's got a dog that he cares about. So he asked if any of us had a similar situation and how we handled it.

Maybe he's not the guy you think he is.

Just saying.  :dunno:

No. First of all, he's an assh0le. Secondly and more importantly, if you can't afford to board your dog safely because it gets sicker by.the mile while you go on a trip, then you either get rid of your dog, or you don't go on the trip.

He shouldn't have a dog. You can tell the way he talks about it.

What? He's asking fellow geeks how to make his dog more comfortable while they travel.

Maybe he doesn't want to leave his dog in the hands of strangers he doesn't trust. Maybe his dog, however uncomfortable she may be traveling, is less uncomfortable traveling than being left behind with strangers.

I think you're out of line here. He knows what's best for his dog. Clearly, he thinks bringing the dog with them is the best choice. Maybe the dog is attached to his daughter and he wants to reunite them as a surprise. Maybe he doesn't want to be apart from his dog that long.

If he didn't care about the dog, he'd just leave it in the backyard and ask a neighbor to maybe stop by and throw some food and water at it every couple of days.

It depends, are you running for President?

If so, don't put in a kennel on top of your car. And definitely don't shoot it. :nono:

The easiest fix is doggy drugs. I have three ninety lbs Dobermans.A big handful. We haven’t had to travel far, but I know it’s only a matter of time before the next hurricane season will start again.  Two of them, Mr. Moose and Princesses Leah thinks they are bad ass, until it starts thundering and lightning. One goes immediately in the pantry and the other hides under a desk. What works for us, this medicine in a doggy treat. It’s a company nameed VetRX. Over the counter on Amazon or Walmart. And if Princess Leah pisses me off, I give her one of my gabipitans. A blanket, pillow, and play Rin Tin Tin Knocks Up Lassie Three.

Thank you to everyone that gave serious answers and a F**k you to the assmunchers that replied (and you know who you are)…

Filling in the missing information, my dog is 4.5 years old and is a Velcro dog…. She had another dog with her, but she had to be put down a year ago…. Since she was added to our family, I have always been WFH (or looking for work), so that is the main reason for her being that…

Because of that, we know that she would not be great in a kennel (she is also not in a crate at home)….

Others have mentioned staying at home and have people come over…. That isn’t a possibility because even when my kids come home from college in consecutive weekends (for example), she doesn’t warm up to them for at least six hours…. Having someone come over to take her out and feed her would not be simple at all for them…

Because of this and the length of time that we will be gone, her coming along is the only reasonable choice, thus the questions…

No drugs , no stress, let your dog be a dog, and kennel the dog with other dogs, happy dog.  Owners become to irresponsible.
