Trade should not be a weapon

“Trade should not be a weapon,” Buffett said at Berkshire Hathaway’s shareholder meeting, an annual gathering in front of thousands in Omaha, Nebraska. “I do think that the more prosperous the rest of the world becomes, it won’t be at our expense, the more prosperous we’ll become, and the safer we’ll feel, and your children will feel someday.”

Trade and tariffs “can be an act of war,” added the legendary investor. “And I think it’s led to bad things. Just the attitudes it’s brought out. In the United States, I mean, we should be looking to trade with the rest of the world and we should do what we do best and they should do what they do best.”

While the bolded sounds good in the liberal world, it is what led us to a world with China as a major threat.  Do you feel safer from China than you were 30 years ago?  Prosperous maybe, with all the cheap stuff from slave labor factories.  

It's also the same mindset that wants to give Iran just enough nuclear capability to build a reactor, but not a weapon.   I'm sure they'll keep their word.  What could go wrong?

Buffett has spent a lifetime proving that he knows how to make money but he and the establishment wing of both political parties, have never shown any regard for American workers nor the communities affected by plant closures. That's a big reason why Trump won vast majorities of the blue collar vote, and through them, all the swing states in 2024. Good luck winning those voters back by telling them they should support open borders that drive down wages and squeeze local budgets, men in girl's sports, and turn over their jobs to 50 cent an hour workers in third world countries in order to enable people who push paperwork and don't make anything to save $1 when they go shopping for artificial dog poop.

Like it or not our economy is built largely around consumption. We aren’t returning to many things being produced here. It just isn’t happening. This isn’t getting reset by a few months of tariffs. Donald can nibble around the edges of this, just like this DOGE bullshit, and then say he won. Then we move on. If some production moves to India or Vietnam fantastic. Who cares?

Buffett the person has made the vast majority of his wealth by investing, buy and hold. He showed again he’s the best moving money in late 2024 and early 2025. 

Politically speaking it is definitely shrewd to take advantage of the fact that many manufacturing jobs have left. Politicians have been talking about this for decades. It’s reality that these jobs aren’t coming back, people are not going to be working on assembly lines like they did in the 70’s.

The border and trans in sports are easy pickings. The Dems have left themselves totally vulnerable there, they have no one to blame but themselves. Carnival barker Don is shrewd enough to lean into that. If he keeps up the tariff war - he won’t it will be done by late summer - but say he does, these issues are all we will hear about because the economy will be hosed.

The point, which seems to escape you, is not that Buffett isn't a genius money manager that has hit again and again over a lifetime in investments. He's proven himself. Its that when he comes to trade, his record is rats' ass as to concern to the American worker as is aparently yours. Oh, the jobs went, who cares, they aren't coming back, fock 'em. Somebody else's problem, what's my portfolio look like?

And both parties played that game. Then Trump came along and took the concerns of labor seriously and won all the swing states. He's been talking about this very thing since the 80s and is even risking his presidency on an economic gamble to restore these jobs. This is also JD Vance's native language, whereas people like you and Kamala don't care.

I would welcome the Democrats to ahead and sell their whatever / who care's / rats ass /"jobs aren't coming back so don't bother trying" in the upper Midwest again in 2028. I think it's a great message for them to embrace. They can package it with DEI, trannies in the girls room, open borders, banning oil production,  importing gang bangers as campaign issues, and whoever runs in 2028 for the GOP is a homophobic, sexist, racist threat to democracy that's worse than Hitler and Trump combined again.

You can yell at the clouds, think about how great things used to be 40 years ago, but by and large we aren’t returning to that type of economy. It’s a side effect of Capitalism. 

I’d say the point that escapes you, is not that Trump isn’t a great politician. It’s that he’s a master bullshitter.

Things can be tweaked, there’s certainly some trade deals that can be shifted a bit around the edges. To think we are going to return to the disco era is just not realistic.

Let’s say Trump gets his wish and all of a sudden we’re manufacturing textiles, consumer electronics, etc. 

What are the odds these jobs offer a living wage and benefits? Labor unions are the reason those jobs used to be valuable but Trump is anti-union. And is Trump going to ask Americans to pay more for US manufactured goods after campaigning on lower prices? Tariffs don’t reduce costs.

These are rhetorical questions. The Reality TV POTUS doesn’t GAF about manufacturing or jobs, he’s just an attention ho playing a game.
