jerryskids 6,578 Posted Wednesday at 02:50 PM After years of delays, today is the day you start needing a REAL ID to get through airport security (or a passport or other approved ID). Old state DLs no longer work. Quote REAL ID Required for U.S. Travelers beginning May 7, 2025 As of May 7, 2025, U.S. travelers will need to present a REAL ID compliant license/ID or another acceptable form of identification to board commercial flights. Travelers who fail to produce a REAL ID or an accepted alternative may not be allowed through TSA security checkpoints. Children under 18 are not required to provide identification when traveling within the United States. REAL ID-compliant cards have a star marking on the upper top portion of the card. If the card does not have one of these markings, it is not REAL ID-compliant and won’t be accepted as proof of identity. A U.S. Department of Defense ID, including IDs issued to dependents, are acceptable alternatives to a REAL ID. Other acceptable forms of ID accepted at TSA Checkpoints include a U.S. passport or U.S. passport card, DHS trusted traveler cards (Global Entry, NEXUS, SENTRI, FAST), and state-issued Enhanced Driver’s License. For a complete list of acceptable alternative forms of identification, visit TSA.gov, or for more information, visit DHS.gov. https://www.travel.dod.mil/About/News/Article/article/4061839/real-id-required-for-us-travelers-beginning-may-7-2025/#:~:text=As of May 7%2C 2025,identification to board commercial flights. I read somewhere that 80% of the country already has it. In Michigan you have to renew every 4 years, so most of us have it. When I lived in Florida it's every 8 and I just read you only have to get your picture updated every 12 years in AZ. So, I imagine the DMV is a sh!t show in some places, and I'm guessing airports in those locations are probably are going to have longer lines through TSA too. Glad I'm prechecked. Quote Arizona (AZ) has the longest period between driver's license renewals. In AZ, a driver's license is valid until the driver turns 65, meaning a new driver could go 50 years without renewal, according to KJZZ. Even with the requirement to renew the license photo every 12 years, Arizona still has the longest renewal period.

Haven't heard about the photo renewal part... my photo is from my 20's, and I'm almost 58. It usually makes for a good laugh with the ID checker at airports in other states, who says something like "oh yeah, AZ never makes you renew these, do they?! " Mine expires in 2032. Oh well, I have a passport if I need to fly somewhere. My next scheduled flights or July, so I'll probably get the new ID in June after the hullaballoo dies down at DMV. I just looked it up -- you need to go in person, although you can schedule appointments, which hopefully makes it a little faster.

Scheduling appts is fine, but it's mostly getting together all the documentation you need that people struggle with. Birth Certificates, Marriage Certificates if you changed your name, proof of residency, etc. It was a LAUNDRY list that I had to bring to DMV, and then my kids too. Renewals, sure Google AI below. I didn't have to do anything extra during the application process, unless you are talking about the my original license application in 2004. Quote REAL ID compliant driver's licenses and identification cards are more secure because they adhere to strict federal standards, making them harder to counterfeit or forge. These standards include various security features, such as barcodes and gold stars, and require more thorough verification of identity during the application process. This helps ensure that the IDs are authentic and can be trusted for purposes like boarding domestic flights and accessing federal facilities. Here's a more detailed explanation: Security Features: REAL ID compliant cards incorporate advanced security features that are difficult to replicate, such as holographic images, microprinting, and barcodes. Enhanced Verification: The application process for a REAL ID requires individuals to provide more documentation to prove their identity, such as a birth certificate or passport, making it more difficult for individuals to obtain a fake ID. Data Sharing: States with State-to-State data sharing systems can verify the authenticity of a REAL ID by checking a secure database, adding another layer of protection. Protection Against Identity Theft: The REAL ID Act was passed in response to the 9/11 terrorist attacks to improve the reliability and accuracy of driver's licenses and ID cards and prevent identity theft. Federal Standards: The REAL ID Act sets minimum security standards for state-issued licenses and IDs, ensuring that all REAL ID compliant cards meet a certain level of security. Drizzay 699 Posted Wednesday at 05:04 PM "Now serving A-2-6-1, at counter 13" I have the Enhanced ID. Got it 3 or 4 years ago and only took me about 20min without an appt. My wife finally went to get hers a couple of weeks ago. It took her 4 hours. Everyone there was trying to do the same. If there wasn't a deadline that was approaching, the wait would have been small. I told her she should have just driven to a DMV out in BFE. A 45min drive each way still would have been faster.

I procrastinated renewing it because I was not certain the trip was going to happen, when I should have just renewed it regardless. Ended up doing everything in January, was told i'd be fine as the turnaround time was 6-9 weeks. Then at some point while I was waiting, their website showed the turnaround time as 8-12 weeks or something like that, but anyone who had filled their stuff out before a certain date was supposed to still be honored that original time frame. It was like 2 weeks before I was supposed to leave and i'm on the phone with them because the status had been "approved but not mailed" for a while. I'm asking them if I can go to the NY office to get it and they tell me there are no available appointments in NY for months. I can go to Dallas or something . Then while on the phone, the guy somehow magically finds out it in the mail to go out that day. I received it maybe 4 days before my flight
