Former FBI director James Comey is under investigation for implying President Donald Trump 'should be assassinated.'

Comey uploaded a cryptic picture on his Instagram account on Thursday afternoon, which featured an assortment of shells arranged to spell out: '86 47.'

That specific combination of numbers has been linked to the assassination of Trump and a 'quiet resistance.

The number 86 is considered slang for 'to kill or murder' within some circles, in an apparent reference to a standard sized grave being eight feet long and six feet deep.

Trump is the 47th president, so some anti-Trump groups use the two numbers together to indicate that Trump should be assassinated.

Department of Homeland Security secretary Kristi Noem exploded at Comey on X within hours of the post, amid mounting fury from MAGA loyalists.

'Disgraced former FBI Director James Comey just called for the assassination of President Trump,' she wrote.

'DHS and Secret Service is investigating this threat and will respond appropriately.'

Everybody that has worked in the restaurant industry at any point in their lives knows the term '86'. It means that they are out of something or someone needs to be removed. 

I haven't worked in the industry for 25 years but even a simple search shows this:

In the restaurant industry, "86" means an item is out of stock or unavailable. The term originated in the 1930s and is believed to have been used as a code word among restaurant staff to indicate they were out of a particular dish or needed to remove a guest from the premises

 

In nearly every context, it means to “refuse service”, “get rid of” or “nix” something. According to Merriam-Webster, the origin of the term 86 began as a slang term that meant something was sold out at soda bars in the 1930's

I had always understood the term "you're 86'd" to mean you are out of here, or you are being tossed out or denied service.  Viewing this in that regard i might consider the post a call for Trump's impeachment, rather than his assasination.  Had it been 187 47 I might have been able to interpret that as a call for assasination as 187 in some circles means murder, apparently a reference to a California penal code.

When I was bartending we used it to to say to the bouncers to remove someone from the bar. Forcibly if necessary and/or call the cops. If the bouncers were on duty we would just tell them who to 86. If not, we would just do it or call the cops. 

On the restaurant side we had a board in the kitchen of what was 86'd off the menu and word was passed around the staff. 

This word has been used a lot outside of that industry as well. Liberals are just stupid.

This is blatantly obvious. 86, while not the most common term used to describe killing someone, absolutely is used to describe just that. To refer to any term that means kill in any way when referencing our president is unacceptable.

"86" means to get rid of something or someone. Equating that to assassination is a bit of a stretch. But given the two attempts on Trump's life already, I can see why someone might misconstrue it that way. I wouldn't.
