Putting aside all the stuff that doesn’t really matter because it won’t ever happen, I wanted to talk about one of Mamdami’s leftist ideas that according to polling is really popular among NY voters: rent control. 

It doesn’t work. Santa Monica has had it for 40 years. Here’s what happens in a nutshell: tenants never leave. And there’s lots of corruption: tenants with deep pockets claim poverty, then sublease the premises for double or triple the rent. The landlord is helpless. 
 

This is an example of a socialist idea that simply works against what it’s intended to do, (Actually I believe that’s true of most socialist ideas.) It’s why I could I never be in love with this sort of candidate; I’ll only support leftists if my alternative is a Trumper.

So Mamdami was on Meet the Press this morning, and seemed quite reasonable. But he ended on a sour note for me when he refused to condemn the phrase “global intifada.” His argument was that, while it was a phrase he doesn’t like, it’s not his job to condemn speech. 
 

This is disingenuous. I truly doubt that if Mamdami was confronted with a bigot using the “N” word he would have any trouble condemning it. And this is where leftists fall apart: all too many of them lack moral clarity. 

What is wrong with saying “Look, I am deeply sympathetic to the Palestinian cause, and strongly critical of Israel, but violence and intifada are not reasonable alternatives. I reject intifada, global or otherwise, and condemn it. I want peaceful just solutions.” ??? That seems easy enough, right?  But this guy can’t say that, I guess for fear of upsetting somebody? And that’s sad. But don’t pretend this is about protecting speech. Because that’s bullsh!t.

i always enjoyed when a young, malleable mind and a good heart would get exposed to Rachel Carson's Silent Spring or Anthony Sampson's Seven Sisters  (You can tell how old I am.  I am sure there are more up to date equivilents)  Those well meanig souls, believing they had been educated after one book would often confront their elders and the "establishment" with their solutions.  They problem was, well meaning though the were, they were not educated, they were simply at the doorstep of becoming so.  Mamdani is like those well intentioned souls.  He clearly is bright, but as yet uneducated.  He has had formal schooling but that is now an echo chamber.  He lacks the insight, the wisdom, the temperance which comes from life experience.  He is credentialed but not educated.He should be involved, but not in charge.  He has the hubris of the inexpereinced believing he can perform beyond his capabilities because he does not even understand or appreciate the complexities of what it is he hopes to be in charge of.
