Here’s some data that says the median distance to a SNAP supermarket for urban households is 0.6 miles.   That means there are plenty of households over 1 mile, and even 0.6 miles is not really easy to access if they don’t have a car.

For years I lived in a very remote, mountainous area of NorCal. The closest GENERAL store was 6 miles away from my home. The vast majority of the customers lived further than that. If you didn't have a functioning vehicle, you were SOL. The clinic I worked for did outreach, and I hauled a van of folks 1.5 hours to the nearest SUPERMARKETS. To a person, they were all on food assistance and did not have a vehicle reliable enough to consistently make those trips. This was an overwhelmingly white, poor, conservative populace. Without the clinic and our outreach, they would have struggled to eat. Most rural Americans live significantly further from a grocery store than one mile. If they're on food assistance, they likely aren't driving reliable late model vehicles. Easy math.

The 0.6 was only for urban SNAP recipients.  For rural recipients the same report said the median distance was between 3-4 miles.  Can’t find it now but I believe I read recently that about 75% of SNAP recipients live in urban areas (however the share of total residents that are on SNAP is higher in rural areas).

The rest of your post wasn't directly related to the sub-thread about fatties on SNAP, so I didn't address it.

To recap:

1. Someone made some joke about there are too many fatties on SNAP and losing some food will be good for them
2. One of the bigger dummies here starts talking about they're only fat cuz food deserts
3. Things as usual fall along Blue and Red Team lines as we all laugh at the dummy for buying the BS that the average poor fatty on SNAP can't get to a grocery store
4. Per usual, the dummy felt defensive and then tried to reframe the discussion as people laughing saying there are 0 SNAP recipients with reduced access to healthy food.  The classic I'll say you're saying something extreme so I have a shot in hell of defending this stupid thing I said.

I was not trying to get a gotcha or say that being 0.6 miles from a grocery store is why people are fat.    Simply sharing data and pointing out that it’s not easy to go grocery store if you live over 0.6 miles away without a car.

I would certainly be on board with limiting some of the items that can be purchased with SNAP.  Getting off topic a bit but in a previous thread about this I might just disagree on which items should be allowed (I think Diet Soda for example should be).
