Former President George H.W. Bush and former first lady Barbara Bush have been hospitalized in Houston, Texas, according to the former president's office.
The former president, 92, has been admitted to the intensive care unit at Houston Methodist Hospital to "address an acute respiratory problem stemming from pneumonia," his office said in a statement.
"Doctors performed a procedure to protect and clear his airway that required sedation," the statement read. "President Bush is stable and resting comfortably in the ICU, where he will remain for observation."
As a precaution, former first lady Barbara Bush, 91, was also admitted to the Houston Methodist Hospital this morning for fatigue and coughing, the statement said.
In his final presidential press conference this afternoon, President Obama said he had been in touch with the Bush family about the former president and first lady.
"They have not only dedicated their lives to this country, they have been a constant source of friendship and support and good counsel for Michelle and me over the years," President Obama said. "They are as fine a couple as we know and so we want to send our prayers and our love to them. Really good people."
This is a breaking news story. Please check back for updates.

Never really understood how Pneumonia kills you.. Does it pretty much fill up your lungs with fluid so it cuts off your ability to breath?

I had partial collapse of both lungs with the beginnings of pneumonia (some fluid found in both lungs) last year. Felt like I was dying, the worst pain I've ever felt. It doesn't need to fill the lung(s). It decreases the ability for the lungs to expand thereby reducing the oxygen output- which can affect other organs if not treated quickly. I was on a monitor and had oxygen on in addition to receiving pneumonia antibiotics. It's not something to mess with, especially in unhealthy or the older pop.

Hope they both recover.

seeing that I've been hospitalized with it multiple times, I'm about 90% confident Pneumonia is how I'll go. But on the plus side, that resume gives me a convenient card to play with not wanting to attend the inauguration of a leader I am not on board with.

Parts of the lung where the pneumonia is localized fill with fluid, sputum, and cell debris. Those regions are no longer able to participate in gas exchange (i.e. they cannot deliver oxygen to the blood). Breathing becomes more difficult with the excess secretions that build up in the airways, and pain from the disease may cause patients to avoid taking deep breaths which causes collapse of alveoli in the further reaches of the lungs (atelectasis), which then makes THOSE alveoli useless for gas exchange. Pneumonia can also easily lead to sepsis (infection of the blood stream) which in serious cases can cause multiple organ failure. Younger, healthier people are unlikely to die from pneumonia (excepting cases such as necrotizing pneumonia or aspiration pneumonia from inhaling vomit), and smaller localized pneumonia are not usually fatal except in the extremely weak or immunosuppressed. Certain things are more likely to make pneumonia fatal, such as significant underlying illnesses and the inability to generate an effective cough to clear the airways (or in patients with dementia or severe mental retardation, the inability to follow commands to cough in order to assist suctioning)

He's the only President George Bush worthy of being concerned about.

:(

Have you asked about the pneumonia shot? I know it's rx'd for folks over 60 but maybe they recommend it for someone like you?

That's how they roll in Canada and all those other places with socialized medicine that your side is always holding up as a great example.

I'm not behind the "old person gets sick, let them die" bandwagon, but I'm certainly in favor of finding ways to keep relatives from letting corpses devour resources and beds indefinitely just because they can't cope with loss and/or are collecting said corpses' benefits/pension/etc. It gets aggravating when you can't get sick patients an ICU bed because several of them are being monopolized for weeks or longer by a patient with end stage dementia, ventilator dependent, and zero ability to communicate with or understand anyone.

But who makes the decision on who gets to live and who they let die?

TrumpCare kind of has a ring to it, I like it. Sounds much more of American origin than ObamaCare.

CA has the death with dignity law. Very grateful for that for if I were to progress, I'd want out and not die a long slow painful death. I think the same option should be offered to the elderly. If they are of sound mind and are tired of being sick and miserable all the time, they should have a right to choose whether to go on or not. My friend's mom is 90. She wants to die already. She's in assisted living visiting the ER once a month now. Meds aren't cutting it with her pain. It's very sad to see.
