Big Blue 06 195 Posted April 21, 2006 Dammit, I was reallly trying to stay out of this, but I can't. I have a problem with teachers reading a gay fairy tale to second graders. It's okay to teach 7 year olds about homosexuality, but it's not okay to mention God? Yes, I have a problem with that. Okay, now that I've gone off topic, I'll step out of it. Have fun. bob_probert_2000 1 Posted April 21, 2006 So no teaching about race? No teaching physics? No teaching about war? No teaching about religions? I said it's senseless to change policy because a few parents object. I said it's senseless to change policy because a few parents object. If you don't like your school's curriculum, change it through normal channels or find another district. Meathead, if a few object, then you are saying ALL other agree it is ok. I am saying you have no idea how many agree and if it s a majority. You may assume that in your pinky commie world, most agree with you, but I doubt it. What is in question about race, physics, war and religions? They are typically approached at an age appropiate level in school. The debate is still whether or not people feel 2nd grade is appropriate.
surferskin 30 Posted April 21, 2006 i think it's ok for schools to teach kids about phags...as long as they refer to them as phags.

For the purpose of policy, if you don't object you might as well agree with it. I'm not sure what you mean by "what is in question?" You discussed staying away from touchy subjects, and each of those are touchy subjects. The debate is not whether people feel 2nd grade is appropriate; it's whether parents get to decide individually what their schools teach. They don't.

I could see strongly religions parents complaining about Physics being taught. Don't forget that in earlier times it was illegal to consider the Earth to not be the center of the Universe. But that changed.

Rusty Syringes 478 Posted April 21, 2006 That's exactly WHY it needs to be taught in schools. Kids need to understand that they're all families. Straights, gays, grandparents, single parents, Party of Five--the demographic makeup is not what defines a family. I'd rather have elementary schools teach things like math, reading, writing, science and history and leave sociology to the high school and college classes. Toro 1 Posted April 21, 2006 The Big Bang. Actually, the big bang, although widely accepted by scientists, violates many of the existing rules of thermodynamics and other scientific laws. For example, one of the main tenets to the big bang theory is that a different set of natural laws were enacted on the mass at the time. So if you want to say that the big bang theory invalidates ID, then it also invalidates most of other other known laws about energy and mass. Also, so where did the ball of crap come from? Toro 1 Posted April 21, 2006 You asked us to name a tenet of Physics which contradicts ID. I did. Now you want to debate the Big Bang theory with me? Why? It does not contradict ID. It describes the theory about the state of matter in our universe at that time. Who's to say that God or some other intellegence didn't make the big bang happen? BuckeyeMiniMe 0 Posted April 21, 2006 I'm beginning to believe that 7 year olds could handle a discussion involving homosexuality much easier than 30 something year olds could. I think that it's important for young people to hear facts before their minds become closed and diseased. It is much harder to "un-learn" an ideal or way of life. I think that many parents are p.o.'d because they realize that they are failing to do these teachings that they claim that they will "get to" when the time is right. It is harder for parents to separate the sex from the love aspect of homosexuality when the subject of marriage is involved. To my knowledge, there is nothing written in stone that says married couples have to engage in sex! My Grandparents slept on different floors in the same house for as long as I can remember! I don't think that a 2nd grader will think about the porn that you as a parent were once subjected to. With everyone coming out of the closet these days, children are much more likely to see same-sex couples kissing or holding hands on the streets than I was as a child. Therefore, children are much more likely to blurt out things like "Why....." At least schools are trying to explain things to them. After all, schools are there to teach facts! This is a statement from the schoolboard, School superintendent Paul Ash defended the teacher's use of "King & King" and emphasized the importance of the lesson about marriage for gay couples. "We couldn't run a public school system if every parent who feels some topic is objectionable to them for moral or religious reasons decides their child should be removed," Ash told the Globe. "Lexington is committed to teaching children about the world they live in, and in Massachusetts same-sex marriage is legal."
