I'am going with R. Leaf, never been so much hype for such a tool of a player.

michelle wie

Can you be considered a bust when you are still a minor? I'm thinking that you at least need to let her develop a real bust before calling her a sports bust.

the hype and the performance are nowhere near the same hence bust until she proves differently

“People still ask me what happened on the 72nd hole at the U.S. Open, and I’ll tell you the truth: it was Michelle Wie. She was in my head,” says Mickelson. “Everything was going well and then I realized this was probably my last chance to win a major since Michelle will be winning them all soon. And I choked and pushed my drive way left. Then I was in deep rough with a tree in front of me. I should have punched out on to the fairway, but I thought, WWMD – ‘What Would Michelle Do’ – like I always do when I’m in a tough spot and decided to go for the green and hit it over the tree. But the thing is, I forgot to remember that I’m not as great as Michelle and therefore can’t pull off a shot like that. So I muffed it, and before I knew it I had lost the Open.”

Ok, OK he was a 7th rounder but I really did think he would do good.

How about Charles rogers?

Lawrence Phillips?

this is one of the most ridiculous posts i've ever read here. the hype she's received is not without merit, she's earned it - even without an official tour win yet. even at sixteen and w/out a win, she's accomplished things in the sport no other person has:

The youngest player ever to qualify for an adult USGA-sanctioned tournament – 10 years, 9 months, 24 days (2000 Women's U.S. Amateur Public Links)

The youngest player ever to qualify for an LPGA tournament – Age 12 (2002 LPGA Takefuji Classic)

The youngest winner (male or female) of an adult USGA-sanctioned tournament – Age 13 (2003 Women's U.S. Amateur Public Links)

The youngest player to make a cut in an LPGA tournament and major – Age 13 (2003 Nabisco Championship)

The youngest player to play in a PGA Tour event – Age 14 (2004 Sony Open)

The lowest round by a female in a PGA Tour event (also the first female to score a sub-70 round in PGA Tour history) – 68 (2004 & 2006 Sony Open)

The youngest player to play in Curtis Cup history – Age 14 (2004)

The youngest female to make a cut in any professional male tour event - Age 16 (2006 SK Telecom Open)

The first female medalist in a men’s US Open qualifying tournament – Age 16 (2006 US Open Local Qualifying at Turtle Bay Hawaii)

as is that weren't enough, she's competed in 12 majors in her old age of 16. in those 12 majors she has 9 top 20 finishes and 7 of those in fact are top 10's.

don't be silly.

Wie played her second professional event in November, 2005 at the Casio World Open on the Japan Golf Tour and shot four over par to miss the cut. Her third professional start was in January 2006, returning to the PGA TOUR at the Sony Open in Hawaii at her home course at the Waialae Country Club, and missed the cut again, this time by 7 strokes.

she was dq'ed in her first professional event because she cheated

actually looking at her stats she's not too bad.

Can you be considered a bust when you are still a minor? I'm thinking that you at least need to let her develop a real bust before calling her a sports bust.

Pre-ESPN, Wie would be looked at, right now, as the future superstar of teh sport. She would be considered a young phenom who has come out of nowhere to compete with ladies in their twenties and thirties.

Instead, all this media over-saturation creates huge hype before the poor kid even gets her feet wet.

When every move you make is under a microscope, you're considered a disappointment even when you're still a child and not nearly developed as a player yet.

the basis for your point is that a 16-year old missed the cut in her 2nd & 3rd professional tournaments - tournaments that also happened to be men's tournaments? not sure that's a nail in the coffin. and as a matter of fact, she missed the cut by 4 in the 06' sony open, went 79/68 beating the likes of past tour winners harrison frazar, lucus glover, bart bryant, shuan micheel, ryan palmer, john cook and todd hamilton.

that's quite a big stretch, big difference between blatant cheating and committing an infraction. in fact, i've big problem with after-the-fact officiating especially when it comes from an outside source. at the time of that drop, her playing partner was completely okay with her move. to go back out and pinpoint her exact position on the course is ridiculous. as it turned out, they deemed the drop to be a couple of inches closer - who's to actually say? that was totally bogus.
