How do the major sports rank

Recommended Posts

I live in Pittsburgh....well, I used to. Now I am just south of it.

Anyways, in this area football rules all. No matter what.

So of the major league sport teams here, obviously the Steelers are #1.

But with the Pirates and Penguins, the interest seems to be about the same. Even when we had winning baseball and hockey teams, I could never get the "feel" of which is the bigger of the two. I guess I'll go with the Pirates because of their history.

Steelers

Pirates

Penguins

How does your city see it? Think of the history behind the team, the fan base, who the local media tends to cover more, etc....

Living just north of KC I'd say the rank would be slightly higher than sucks.

Chiefs

Royals

I'm sure CMH will be along shortly to tell me I'm not a "real" fan.

Orlando, FL

College football is still king in the South, especially among the older people. (UF, FSU and Miami take yer pick)

Pro football is second biggest. (In Orlando, it's mostly a mixture of Bucs and Dolphins fans.)

Basketball and baseball are after-thoughts, especailly with the younger people. (most popular are Orlando Magic / Atlanta Braves... nobody cares about the Devil Rays or Marlins)

Nobody in Florida has any interest in hockey - except me. (Go Tampa Lightning!)

The World Champion Cardinals :dunno:

Blues (making a strong and swift comeback since 12/06)

Rams (jumped over the Blues in 1999/2000)

Rams support comes and goes with season results and expectations. The Blues fell off the edge after the hockey strike, but since the coaching change in December support is making a comeback. Within the last month I have seen people dust off their old Blues jerseys and start wearing them again with pride.

Im in Virginia, so lets see...we have..

football.The Virginia..no, no, no

baseball..The Virginia..no, no, no

basketball..The Virginia..no, no, no..

That sums it up. As far as Virginia athletics of any sort, non-existent would be the best way to describe it.

The thread title says "major sports." Since I doubt more than a handful of people know what sport any of those teams play, they probably aren't "major sports".

Where in Virginia? If you're north of Springfield, you can count any DC sports team as your own. With that said, University of Virginia, Virginia Tech, and *gasp* George Mason all hail from Virginia. The Capitals' practice facility and Redskins training camp are here as well

I hear ya. My company has a lot of people in Richmond so I get offered tickets for events in Richmond. Among the highlights... NASCAR, Monster Truck Jam, WWE, Richmond Renegades (whatever the ECHL hockey team is), Professional Bull Riding, Lil Bow Wow concerts. :dunno:

I didn't realize you lived here in Phoenix. :dunno:

Anyway, I agree with your assessment. The Cards and DBacks are kinda 2A and 2B, depending on the season at this point. If the Cards actually did something, they could own this town though.

The Coyotes are pretty much not on the radar.

Hard to say in New York because folks talk baseball during football season here (especially the Yankees). I still say football is king with baseball closely behind. Basketball and Hockey trail the others considerably.

Bowling is fun

I must add that I am not shabby myself. Of course I pretty much excel at anything athletic or requiring dexterity.
