Median income

The median income divides households in the US evenly in the middle with half of all household earning more than the median income and half of all households earning less than the median household income. In 2004 the median household income in the United States was $43,389.[21] According to the US Census Bureau, the median is "considerably lower than the average, and provides a more accurate representation."[35] Considering other racial and geographical inequities in regards to household income, it should come as no surprise that the median household income varies with race, size of household and geography. The state with the highest median household income in the United States was New Hampshire with $57,352, followed by New Jersey, Maryland and Connecticut, making the Northeastern United States the wealthiest area by income in the entire country.[36] In terms of region the median household income was as follows: "Northeast ($47,994), West ($47,680) and South ($40,773)." Median household income in the Mid-West declined by 2.8% to $44,657.[37] While median household income has tendency to increase up to four persons per household, it declines thereon after. This indicated that while four person households have larger incomes than those with one, two or three members, household with seem to earn progressively less as their size increases beyond four persons. According to the US Census Bureau 2004 Community Survey, two-person households had a median income of $39,755, with $48,957 for three-person households, $54,338 for four-person households, $50,905 for five-person households, $45,435 for six-person households, with seven-or-more-person households having the second lowest median income of only $42,471.[38]. In terms of race, Asian-Americans households had the highest median household income of $57,518, European-American households ranked second with $48,977, Hispanic or Latino households ranked third with $34,241. African American or Black households had the lowest median household income of all races with $30,134.[37]

I'm guessing it's gross, that's how most of these things are done.

Is this net or gross? And I assume it includes dual incomes.

Sorry about that. I'll edit the 1st one with a link.

it's the entire households income and I'm guessing it's gross, that's how everything is always judged.

I can only speak for California, but these numbers seem so low. Especially when taking into consideration that these are for more than one earner.

Must be Gross considering only 3 states (Wyoming, North Dakota and Montana) + DC have increased from 1995. Salaries have increased but by less than taxes, insurance and other deductions, hence the overwhelming -% across the board.

Wyoming, North Dakota and Montana probably only went +% because richer people have moved there from other states or built vacation homes and such.

DC went +% because the politicians increased their tax breaks :dunno:

Alex Rodriguez raises the average income in New York state by $1.38 by himself!

He might raise the average, but he only moves the median by 1 person.

actually it's a man that's keeping the black community down. there are too many single parent households, black women are struggling (myself included) to raise their children alone and that is why our median income is so low. it sucks.

eta,

well...that's projecting blame. children should come within the confines of marriage so, it's not men's fault anymore than women's.

I think she was saying that since black men don't stay around, alot of the black households are made up of single women and their kids which brings down the median household income for blacks compared to a two parent white household. Not that the "man" as in the white man / gov't is holding them back.

Still, it remains someone elses fault..... time to take responsibility for ones actions, it takes two people to create a baby, if one asserts a systemic issue whereby black men are recognized for walking away from a pregnant woman, do not have sex without proper protection, or wait until they marry you ;)

If you don't want to be alone with a child, you better come protected, or ....by yourself :D

I know that this is going to come off WAY mean, but um, you did get pregnant with a man you weren't married to, right? How is this anymore his fault than it is yours?
