Dan 66 Posted January 18, 2008 What does this mean? I think it's a reference to the fact that Mike Martz' arrogance may have played a hand in the Patriots being in position to win with a last-second field goal. Playing against a team that had shown no ability, to that point in the game, to stop the run, Martz decided to pass, pass, pass.
Sho Nuff 720 Posted January 18, 2008 Joe Montana is the greatest QB! Favre is not even close and he choked in his second Superbowl appearance. Stick a fork in this guy, he is overrated! Favre was supposed to stop TD?
Sho Nuff 720 Posted January 18, 2008 Peyton Manning recently surpassed Dan Marino in my book as the greatest all time. And I'm a Dolphin fan. I put Farve around 6th or so because of his propensity for turnovers. Yet...his TD to INT ratio is quite good. Beats out Marino in ever passing stat. More wins. 3 MVPs. 1 ring. Dan....great QB...but no way to put him over guys like Montana, Favre, and Brady. Manning has yet to surpass any of those guys at this point of his career. Marino's main downfall was that he never played wth a hall of fame receiver or a real good running back. A quarterback is the centerpiece of any team, and they get the credit and/or blame for championships or lack thereof. I realize that, but think of the stats that Marino put up with that cast of supporting players. As long as he played, it's hard to remember him ever having a stud running back behind him. Sammy Malone? Karim Abdul Jabar? Tony Nathan?

NewbieJr 541 Posted January 18, 2008 And Favre has? What WRs did Favre have that were HOFers? Sharpe could have been. but his career ended short. RBs? Hah!!!! I'd actually say the same thing about Favre. He was more than just a gatekeeper QB who was surrounded by an awesome team. Favre and Marino had similar talent surrounding them (although I think Sharpe may have been better than any receiver Marino ever had. Same for Ahman Green at RB). Marino made one Super Bowl and lost. After that, his stats were great, but it couldn't overcome the team he was on.

Playing against a team that had shown no ability, to that point in the game, to stop the run, Martz decided to pass, pass, pass. The Rams went into the fourth quarter down by fourteen, tied it on their last possession, and then lost on the Patriots' last possession. You could maybe argue that they maybe should have run more earlier in the game as the picks played a huge part in the outcome, but passing was a huge part of that offense and you dance with the one that brung ya. If they had committed to the run and still lost people would say they should have passed more. Hard to fault Martz too much for engineering a 14 point fourth quarter rally a.k.a. "when the game was on the line".

I put Farve around 6th or so because of his propensity for turnovers. I think Marino is the best pure passer I've seen and Montana the best field general. But I agree that Manning may have surpassed Marino as far as being a pure passer, and I think Brady is pressing Montana in the field general type of qualities. I find Favre tough to quantify, I don't know that he is a great passer on par with Marino or Manning or a great field general on par with Montana or Brady, but he has enough combined qualities to make him great nonetheless. I do think his willingness to take chances has helped him compile a lot of his stats but at the same time has cost his team at times.

They simply did not run. Yes, the 4th quarter highlighted an impressive comeback, but it was nothing new . . . it just started getting all the way to the end zone. The run was abandoned early, which was mystifying, given that they were averaging a ridiculous number at the time. Just saying . . . And I was rooting for the Patriots that Super Bowl. I always considered Manning a Marino-type, while Brady is more of a Montana-type. Favre is a gambler in an otherwise normally-conservative position. QBs are taught as children to "not make a big mistake". The most successful QBs in the league are the ones who have normally been successful in following that advice. Favre is just the opposite. He has probably made more passes that have made me wonder what the heck he was thinking, than any other quarterback in history. On the other hand, the fantastic plays he's made, when other QBs might have taken a sack or thrown the ball out of bounds, easily makes up for it. There hasn't been a quarterback since I've been watching football that you can put in the same category, style-wise, as Favre.

I won't disagree that they would have been well-served to give the ball to Faulk more througout the game, but I think gocolts phrasing was misleading in that it suggests there was a point in that game where they could have just given it to Faulk a few times and somehow salted the game away. That wasn't at all what actually transpired.

What's lost in this analysis is that Favre is not just entertaining. He is a leader, and he may be the best leader listed in this thread. Certainly this is a critical component in evaluating any quarterback, and is more of a reason that people love him than the gambling attitude. My opinion, but I am one of the ones that "loves that" about him.

Pimptaddy 0 Posted January 19, 2008 Yeah cause your opinions are the "end all, be all". Actually, this is not just my opinion. Montana is considered the greatest QB of the modern era and Unitas is considered the greatest prior to the modern era. They are both widely considered the two greatest QBs of all time and even their haters place them both in the top 5 of all time.
