Starting a Franchise Tomorrow?

Recommended Posts

Had an argument with a couple buddies over this.

One guy said, PManning: "Get some good pieces on offense around this guy, and your offense will be world class."

Another said Champ Bailey: "The only true 'shutdown corner' is a huge cog to a great team."

Another guy made a great argument for Mario Williams of all people...."Great NFL teams have someone who can rush the passer...a great pass rusher makes the other 10 defensive players that much better....a corner/safety is nothing if the QB has all day to throw....Mario is young and an ideal player to build a franchise around."

I would go with Patrick Willis...an absolute beast in the middle and was dominant with an average D-line in front of him, and an average secondary behind him.

Who would you pick? Youth, position, price, ticket-selling star power....are all things you have to consider.

Which player on a football team touches the ball more than anyone else? The Quarterback. Now just pick the best QB under the age of 28 since you are "building" a team.

What position represents the most number of #1 draft choices in the NFL draft? W/O looking, I think I will go out on a limb and say Quarterback.

That is not a cowinkydink

I would say Tom Brady or Peyton Manning. Everyone else would far below these 2.

this was not a pick, it was a point trying to be proven. point being, i do not always agree w/just automatically taking the best qb under a certain age. i'll gladly take the derek anderson's of the world and make an adrian my pick.

Derek Anderson was like the 6th best QB in the League last year. By that logic: well I'll pick Tom Brady and just gladly have a Joseph Adaii, MBIII or Brian Westbrooks of the world as my RB.

I would have to go with Brian Urlacher, but Patrick Willis is younger and would be my second choice....

My team would be created around defense, if you cant score you cant win :overhead:

If I were starting a franchise, I'd be more worried about picking a great GM/Head of player personnel than a player.

That said, I'd still probably go with the LT and Joe Thomas looked pretty darn good.

Think of the last set of really good LT's drafted early who panned out: Orlando Pace, Walter Jones, and Jonathan Ogden. There are 4 SB appearances and two championships between them. It's easier to find talent at WR, RB, and LB.

QB, LT, DE, and CB are pretty tough to land that elite player. I'd rather build the cornerstone of the o-line and take my chances at the skill positions, hoping I can land some talent.

Urlacher's a good choice, except that whole arthritis in the back thing might scare me off some. Probably an over wrought issue, but would have me pause a bit.

P-Willie? I like that one

Honestly if I could just get a strong front 5 on the o-line before anything else, I'd be pleased. Ball control, keep my defense fresh, give my QB time to learn and big holes for even an average NFL RB...I should be competitive in most games.

The No.1 goal of every francise should be to win a World Championship. Here is a list of the QB's in the NFL that have won a Superbowl:

Bart Starr--late round pick

Joe Namath--original pick

Len Dawson

Johnny Unitas--cut by Steelers

Roger Staubach--original pick

Bob Griese --original pick

Terry Bradshaw--1st round pick

Ken Stabler

Jim Plunkett--traded by Pats

Joe Montana--3rd round pick?

Joe Theisman--played Canadian football first, right?

Jim McMahon--original pick

Phil Simms--definitely not a first round pick, but original pick

Doug Williams--originally a Buccaneer

Jeff Hostetler--not a first round pick

Mark Rypien--definitely not a first round pick

Troy Aikman--1st round and original team

Steve Young --originally a Buc after the USFL

Brett Favre--originally a Falcon picked in round two

John Elway--originally a Colt and the mentor for Eli and Archie Manning

Trent Dilfer--originally a Buc

Tom Brady--6th round

Brad Johnson--played in NFLEurope prior to Vikings and Bucs

Ben Rothlisburger--1st rounder original team

Peyton Manning--1st rounder, original team

78% of all teams that won it all had a HOF type QB running the show. HTH

Good point, but tell me how many of them were number 1 picks and were drafted originally by that team? Also look at the existing o-lines with the 1st round QBs on the list and most of them had excellent lines to start--Aikman an exception, but eventually a great line.

I'll have to think on it. Thinking LT or defense . . .

Joe Thomas - great option.

DT Albert Haynesworth

LB Lofa Tatupu

Mario Williams is not bad, either, but I think at that point, I choose Osi Umenyiora.

Adrian Peterson.

Great young player, but what do all these Top 10 All-Time RB's in NFL history have in common?

Barry Sanders

Earl Campbell

OJ Simpson

Eric Dickerson

Ladanian Tomlinson

None won a Superbowl.

You have to start with a great line, and a great line starts with the blindside tackle. No QB is gonna be great without protection, just as no RB is gonna run wild without blocking. From what I saw, Thomas looked good, and he has youth on his side. I'm with Waldman in that the most important piece is having somebody with the eye for the right personnel, but if I'm forced to chose a player, gimme the best/meanest LT you can find.

Building a dominant, dependable offensive line is always important. Joe Thomas and make sure I have a damn good o-line coach. The rest of the offense will fall in place.

Ya, that whole back problom sucked this year...But it looked like it got much better tword the end of the season.

The answer is Tom Brady.

Bironas.

He's proven that you can have a jack shiit team, a worthless quarterback and you can STILL make it to the playoffs. He's the 2nd leading scorer in the league behind Randy Moss. When you figure that (with incentives), Randy cost the franchise $31,000 per point and Bironas only cost HIS franchise 3,200 - a tenth of what Randy charges - , Bironas is a much better value pick.

:dunno:

The answer is Tom Brady.

It really is. Either him or Peyton.

I like the O-Line approach and all, but lets face it when you have a chance to start off your franchise with a Top 10 or even Top 5 All Time Quarterback that still has 5+ years ahead of them it really is a no-brainer.

Who's going to protect that top 5/10 QB of all time? You can have the best QB in the world, but if you don't give him time to throw the ball/make decisions, he'll end up like David Carr.

Talk about not knowing the facts.

He was not even the top scoring kicker.

The kid who was...has a pro-bowl QB who holds almost every known passing record.

Might Light is the only Pro-Bowl O-linemen on the Patriots this year. Somehow Brady did okay though. :overhead:

Just because you don't have a Joe Thomas on your team doesn't mean you cannot have a average to above average offensive line. HTH

The thing is...this question is always stupid like that.

If you start it with Brady or Manning...that does not mean you will have a bunch of crap out there on the Oline.

Conversely...if you do start it with Oline...it does not mean you are going to neglect any other position.

The answer, assuming you will put competent people in front of them...as what was said, its Brady or Manning.

Its called starting a team with sure fire first ballot HOFers that right now are already creeping up on top 5 all time QBs.

Ask the same question in about 1997 and it would have been Brett Favre.

Don't need that kid. Like you said, HE has a pro-bowl QB. The only reason he eked out Bironas is because he has a QB who can put him in the position to score lots of XP's (unlike Bironas' QB). Bironas leads in FG's- not dependent on QB's to give him pity kicks with XP's.

Like I said, Bironas has proven you can have a crap QB and STILL score a crapload of points. :overhead:

I few years ago I would have said Michael Vick. He wouldn't have been the long-term answer, but he could have covered up a lot of a teams offensive deficiencies while the front office focused on building the D through draft and free agency.

This is a really tough question rhough. With basketball and baseball, it's pretty straight forward. With football, not so much. A better, more realistic exercise might be to pick five players who did not rank in the top fifteen at their position (though I'd not sure how you'd set rankings) in either of the past two years.

Gimme the best offensive lineman available. A good O-line makes EVERYONE on offense better. Even the worst RB can fall forward for 3 yards if there's a big enough hole and any QB can make some plays if given enough time. Even if the defense sucks, they can still compete by scoring enough. And offense puts fans in the seats and sells more merchandise!
