Definitely agree with the first two. Nick Cage wouldnt' have gotten a gig if it weren't for his family connections.

 

last one: Disagree. I agree that he's never really ACTED, but people said that about Jimmy Stewart too. There's certain actors that are - am I using this right? - Character Actors. They never really shift from their onscreen personna from film to film, but they're enjoyable to watch. I'd probably put George Clooney in this category too.

Yes, however he has a great skill that gets him by. Script Reading. Dude must be one helluv a script reader to pick the movies that he does. Speed, Matirx, Devil's Advocate, Point Break ect. Dude is an awful actor, but he knows which movies to take.

i agree, but robert deniro and jack nickelson are pretty much the same in each role as well.

well, this probably belongs in an over-rated actor thread. To say he can't act is harsh. I think most of the movies he was in were pretty good, he's just not all that. He picks good roles, you got to give him that.

I agree they both have distinct styles that carry over into each role. DeNiro usually plays similiar roles, but I think Nicholson was different. He definitely has a distinct style, but his roles were more diverse from 'one flew over' to 'the shining' to even 'a few good men'.

I disagree. To me he's maybe the best actor today. I can't think of one movie he has been in that wasn't at least good. I'll watch anything he's in

I have actually liked some of the movies these two guys have been in but if you really look at their acting it is pretty weak:

 

Kevin Costner and Ben Affleck.

 

There are plenty of others but these two standout to me because they are so overrated.

That one where he was the prisoner on the plane? Great cast - horrible lead. WTF? How do you fock up a southern accent? That accent was so on again, off again - it reminded me of Costner's phantom ("Oh yeah! I'm British!") accent in Robin Hood.

Natalie Portman is a focking terrible actress. The only movie I have seen that she was even okay in was Closer, and I think that is just because Jude Law and Clive Owen carried her performance.

Gotta admit, I've never really seen a role where I wasn't thinking the whole time, "yeah, he's Brad Pitt and he's acting allright."

 

I dunno where I stand with him. I mean, he's believable when he's distressed or angry (Seven, Mexican), but even then, I don't think of him as the character as much as I think of him as Brad Pitt Acting.

 

Contrast that with some of Clooney's roles where, while I obviously knew who he was, I at least bought off on the idea that he was Danny Ocean, etc.. Same with Mel Gibson - HUGE movie star, yet, even though I know who he is, I buy off on the character he plays. Just never been able to do that with Pitt.

Portman is terrible! I remember watching her in Garden State and she couldn't even fake cry for sh!t. It is pretty much the one thing that any actress ought to do. Even two-bit local performing artist center actresses can fake cry well. But not Portman--the scenes in Garden State where she was supposed to be all torn up were focking hilarious because she sucked so bad at it. She is just a cute face and nothing more in my opinion.
