Sit your defense to secure the win?

Recommended Posts

So it looks like this. In my game this week, im up 2 points with Tenn defense left to play. All of my opponents players have played already. Now I know Tenn defense has been solid all year, but theres still that slim chance Indy could go off and thus giving me negative points. Have any of you ever sat a defense so you could get a guaranteed win? I dont see why I shouldnt.

if NFL teams can take a knee, you can sit your D

However, i would start the titans defense still. You might need the points at the end of the year for a tiebreaker.

I was up 2 points 2 weeks ago and the only player either of us had left was my Giants' Defense against Cleveland.

I thought about sitting them, but figured it was a great matchup.

Long story short, no sacks, no turnovers, and 35 points gave me -7 points and the loss.

Man up.

Start the #1 defense in the NFL at home on MNF.

Enjoy the win.

If they get stomped, so be it, they're part of your team.

IMO it's bush league to wuss out and sit your D because you're afraid they might get negative points (for like, what, 34 points? gimme a break). But also, none of my leagues allow an illegal lineup. Kind of old school that way.

YMMV

If I am up by a few points with just a defense to go and my opponent is played out with no one left then I sit my D. I was burned before by a defense in that situation and lost by 2 points when I was up by 3 before the game. It is smart and just like taking a knee.

If you play them, the chances of you losing the game are pretty damn slim.

If you sit them, the chances of you losing are zero.

Easy choice to me. The extra points would be nice, but guaranteeing the win is first priority.

Last year I played a guy who was up 2 on me going into MNF and he sat his D (the only player either of us had going). A Tuesday scoring correction later that gave him -2 allowed me to escape with a tie. If he started his D he would have won.

Just food for thought

Don't be crazy! Sit them and take the win. You will hang yourself Tuesday if this decision cost you a victory.

1---definitely have done it. have sat a defense versus top flight offenses while i had a slim [1-5pts] lead to ensure no mistakes. actually, i have even done it with a qb before: i have flacco in the lineup due to major qb injury; thus, sat him a few weeks ago against tennessee to ensure my 3 point lead.

2---definitely NOT "bushleague" or anything of the sort to not start your defense or any player to remove chance of negative points. it is your lineup, and your discretion how to deploy them.

1. yup, if you can sit them, then do so and take a guaranteed win.

2. I don't have the option to "sit" anyone including a defense, but If I did, I wouldn't consider it unfair or bush-league to do so.

I'd say you start the #1 defense in the NFL tonite because the points could be important in tie breakers situations. Every year our leagues often come down to ties in the 4th and final playoff spot which is then decided by total points. Every point can be important.

Also about 2 years ago there was a team in my league that did just that, he benched his Defense when he was up 2 points. His defense would of put up about 5 or 6 (I forget) and he wins anyways. But wait....the next day he signs into the league home page and sees he lost by 1 point. How? Well the NFL had a scoring change on a fumble that was originally given to the RB but then was changed to HIS Qb becuz the handoff never totally occurred. In our league a turnover is -3 points and he lost by 1. Just a thought. I'd play the defense....if you actually thought the Colts might put negative points on ur defense prior to the week, then you wouldn't have started them.

crappy rules if your league lets you start an illegal lineup.

What's "illegal" about it? It's the same thing as one of your players having a bye week and you not wanting to drop somebody to fill his spot...

Yahoo Allows it and I have done it.... He can call you whatever he wants...he will still lose.

How is it remotely possibly that there are leagues that have negative points but don't force you to submit a full lineup? That's ridiculous. And don't give me this nonsense that it's the same thing as a QB taking a knee to run out the clock. The comparison would be if the QB and the entire offense decided not to even take the field for fear of fumbling the snap. The NFL demands that a team take the field until the game is over, your league should do the same.

If you are a man, then you have a pair of balls and you start them.

If you are a woman, then you have no balls and you sit them.

Sorry 9-Route, gotta call your BS on this one... That was a 1pm Sunday game in Baltimore... How do I know? because I was fugg'n there and started tailgating at 8am in Btown. How the fug did you have a 3 point lead before the 1pm games started on Sunday??

You lost major cool points trying to make up some crap like that and get away with it!! Sad dude... unbelievably Sad! If you have to make shiat up to prove your point... Just stop posting here!

Oh, let me guess... ur probably going to come back and say you benched him before the games started and ended up winning by 3 right?? liar!

J. Flacco's stat line in that game... 18/27, 153yds, 0td's, 2int, 0fumbles. Not a good day at all, but not worthy of -3 points in any league I play in

 What he said!!! Take that win, screw what everybody says. A "W" is much more important than possiibly losing your week. Peyton might be Peyton this week. Look what he did to the Ravens Def.

I agree, plus you shouldn't be able to change your lineup AFTER the games on Sunday have been played! wtf?

leagues that allow you to set invalid lineups are wrong

dont be a poosay start the D

Yep. In my league if you have an empty slot in your lineup you get zero points for the week. If you play someone on a bye (instead of maybe dropping someone you don't want to for a filler) you get a 10 pt deduction.
