Has any US President ever been dealt a worse hand than Obama?

Recommended Posts

The Depression my ass. The Carter presidency crossover was 5 times worse. Right now is hunky dory by comparison.

I don't understand how people forget history so quickly. What do they teach kids in school today? For example, do they mention spending half a day in a line waiting for gasoline, hoping the station didn't run out before you got to the pump. Today, people complain about paying 2 dollars a gallon. Yeah, but you can get a fill up anywhere within a minute. Or how ridiculous unemployment was.

Trueman

He had to decide whether to invade Mainland Japan at the cost of 100's of 1000's of american lives OR become the first(and only) nation to use an atomic weapon agaist mankind.

It was just over 100 days after taking over that the Bomb was dropped :bandana:

Umm, was Obama dropped off a space ship a few months ago?

Obama was elected to the Senate in 2004. The Democrats took over the House and Senate in 2006.

The entire premise of this thread is so fukn stupid..

When you were part of the problem from the beginning how can you be "handed" anything.. The "handed" implies you had nothing to do with it from the jump.

It's a sh!tty time and the short time Obama has been in charge things have gotten worse.. I think people are really starting to have buyers remorse and are seriously wondering if this guy is in over his head.

Sucks for us I guess..

Newbie and the rest of the Demwits would truly love to erase ol' Peanuthead from the history books, wouldn't they. :overhead:

I loved Ronald Reagen. One of our best Presidents,.

Guys like RP just can't comprehend that. A guy who could give a rat's ass what party a President comes from.

Lincoln, Johnson (Lincoln's successor), FDR...not sure where I'd rank them but those weren't very optimal positions, either.

Reagan...lol...you youngins that weren't around before MTV need to study history a bit more. Reagan...good one (and i voted for him twice, so shut it).

one might even argue ford...after nixon's resignation, the country now very cynical, the malaise of vietnam still ripe.

The democrats have control of the presidency, house of reps and the senate.

Yeah, he really has his back against the wall there.

I'm not talking about bi-partisan, political BS.

I'm talking about what the country is facing. Having a majority control of the house doesn't help with the economy or the war.

Here's what I don't understand. If things were pretty shiity back in the early 80s, and we got out of it, why not follow the same roadmap? Apparently whatever Reagan did worked, so why do the complete opposite and hope to achieve the same result?

Because Democrats want to empower the government to be in control of everything...

Economy is worse now than it was the day before he was elected. You do the math.

Dude, every single great economic mind in teh world has said that this economy is going to get worse before it gets better. They were saying that before they knew who the next President was going to be.

They've all said it isn't likely to level out until the end of 2009. If you (or anyone else) expected Obama to turn it around in his first month of office, you were definitely drinking the kool- Aid. Hell, even Obama didn't make that claim while running.

And they also said that doing nothing would be much better than passing the "stimulus" package that Democrats pushed through...

Your idiocy knows no limits. There is no comparison between the chaos that Reagan overcame, and the recession Obama is making worse. I guess you missed this earlier post:

Things were pretty bad when Reagan took over.

Prime Rate

1981: 20.5%

2009: 3.25% (Current)

Inflation

1980: 14.8%

2008: 0% (December)

Unemployment Rate

1982: 10.8%

2008: 7.2% (December)

30-Year Mortgage Rate

1981: 18.5%

2009: 4.96% (Current)

Real Gas Price (2008 dollars)

1981: $3.45 per gallon

2009: $1.82 (Current)

So basically, you will excuse him for any failures as president.

Thanks...but I think by your posts we already knew that.

Coming from the guy that whines all the time if you put words in his mouth or spin something into a bigger deal.

what were foreclosure rates? what was going bankrupt on wall street? chrsyler was in the shitter, but i don't remember the entire auto industry threatening bankruptcy. oh, yeah: some punk college students in iran held america hostage and let them go the day ronnie took the oath.

but that was much, much worse than a 2-front war and 7000 dead in mexican drug wars. silly me.

lol...wow. get your mouth off ronnie's schlong and get a clue.

as much as you want to credit ronnie, you also have conveniently left out the gops got gouged in mid-terms in 82 because the economy was still (gasp) in the shitter and ronnie did one of the biggest tax hikes in history to curb the deficit (one of several times he followed his tax cuts with massive government intervention and taxes to offset the spiraling deficit).

the. end.

and as we're foisting all blame on obama for the current numbers of the economy--it's his watch now, right?--let's see what happened under ronnie's watch in the early 80s:

--The early 1980s recession was a severe recession in the United States which began in July 1981 and ended in November 1982.The primary cause of the recession was a contractionary monetary policy established by the Federal Reserve System to control high inflation.

--By September 1982, the jobless rate reached 10.8%. Twelve million people were unemployed, an increase of 4.2 million people since July 1981.

whaaattttt? things were actually GETTING WORSE under ronnie a full YEAR AND A HALF AFTER HE TOOK OFFICE?!

and here you are throwing obama under a bus, recliner, after 5 focking weeks. you must have been really biatching about ronnie back in 81 and 82, right? what a clusterfock he did there.

Comparing challenges like this is like comparing athletes from different eras. It's apples and oranges. That being said, I'd say the closest comparison (in situations and approaches) is FDR.

The difference is: FDR had a populace who was willing to sacrifice. Obama has an entitlement society which expects the government to solve its problems. And he seems to think he can do it by taking away from the people who make this country tick.

Reagans legacy has been visited by revisionists more than any other president. Not saying he wasn't a good president, but the man was not anything at all like how he is remembered today.

Between the worst financial collapse (which was at it's early stages, unfortunately) since the 1920's, and the war situation in Iraq, has there ever been a US President who had the odds stacked against him as much as Barrack Obama?

Obviously, the mess with the economy was deep-rooted and started long before anyone even knew who Obama was, but he was handed the task of trying to strighten it out.

As for the war, by now, 99% of Americans know that we never should have even gone over there, but that doesn't change the fact that we are involved in what could be a worldwide political nightmare if the withdrawing of troops causes international problems and doesn't go smoothly.

The point of this thread isn't to discuss whether we think he'll succeed or not, everyone's opinion on that ois well documented. The question posed is, has any US President ever been handed a more daunting task?

Discuss.

nancy pelosi, harry reid, barney frank, and chris dodd created this economy to hand over to barryo. too bad for him they are in his own party and don't know their asses from a hole in the ground (except barney). they know this is their last hurrah and are getting theirs while they can. you can't biitch when you're one of the morons voting them in.

Yes, the one dealt to Bush by Clinton. Horrible transition because Clinton was a piece of $hit. He had destroyed our Intelligence operations and sold out to China. 911 was the worst disaster done to us on our soil, and Bush had to step to the plate. He did so protecting us from that momemnt on, and he had to build the mechanism to do it. This financial mess was sign sealed and delivered by Barney Frank with help from hairyreed, and the lady with the big t!ts. The Dems allowed this economy to tank so they could win an election. The only thing Bush could be blamed for was spending too much time protecting this country, thinking that Congress, Reublicans and Democrats, would manage their business, and they didn't! Obama got just what the dems wanted, and now we still have hairyreed, the lady with the big t!ts, and Barney franks around to fock it up worse. I shutter at the thought of Obama in charge of this Countries safety. He is still too concerned with his Image abroad, and his standing in Hollywood.

the cons conveniently now completely ignore reagan's massive government intervention (taxes--especially to social security--and the infusion of tens of thousands of government workers into the system) and focus exclusively on his tax cuts (which were always followed by huge and frantic government intervention to offset the spiraling debt his tax cuts caused).

and they blame carter for the economy that got progressively worse for nearly two full years after ronnie took office--but of course say that obama and his 5 weeks on the job are exclusively to blame for our current woes.

but then again, all these people believe what rush tells them to believe so it isn't surprising.

Take the same numbers that compared what Obama walked into to what Reagan walked into and look at what they did during his 8 years. Compare unemployment, interest rates, the prime, and inflation between when Reagan took office and when he left.

The End.......

I totally agree that this was a bad hand for any President. Economy in recession, banking crisis, and an unwinnable war in Afganistan. For those reasons Obama will probably be a one term President. I think anyone in that sitation would be screwed - Obama or McCain.
