Isn't it more about wailing in Arab culture? I think it's kind of expected and so also very connected to by Arab women to wail in those scenarios. If she loses a kid, she just lost a chunk of her meaning in life, her purpose ceased in part. Only kid...maybe she lost it all. If wailing during emotionally intense times is common, if a mother didn't all out wail at the loss of her child people would probably think she took her role/her meaning for granted.

Yes, that is true. I think you can actually hire "mourners" if you don't have enough.

 

Of course, a lot of that Arab wailing stuff stems from two other cultural traits...

 

1) Women in Arab culture have no purpose, and no identity, outside of their male relations. They are chattel, and when their husband/father dies, they basically are doomed to a life of spinsterhood. Hell, in some countries, they can't leave the house without a male family member, so their death would be inconvenient to say the least.

 

2) They tend to be a very... um, I guess the word would be extreme type people. Whatever they feel, be it grief, anger, religious fervor, they always tend to take it too far.

I'll attempt a serious answer.

 

The answer is that white (by which I mean Anglo-Saxon British or Germanic descended) culture is very different from the Latin (French, Italian, Spanish) and Middle Eastern,Slavic, Indian (dots not feathers) and African cultures.

 

One of the key manifestations of this is that I think white culture is much more... stultified? in public than the others. White children, and especially women, were traditionally brought up to never, ever, make a scene in public. I remember numerous occasions where my mother punished us, not because of what we did per se, but because we did it in public.

 

The other cultures, on the other hand, seem to encourage more... exuberance from its members. Its what the Italians call La Dolce Vita (the good life) the French call joie de vivre (the joy of life) etc. and so on.

 

In America, the two traditional cultures, Black and White, seem to massively disagree with one another as to public decorum. White people (and this is deteriorating rapidly) generally wouldn't be caught dead arguing or showing emotion in public. Black people generally don't give a fock who is watching.

 

One of the saddest things to me is the complete and utter collapse of manners in this country. Nobody seems to give a fock anymore. They will speak loudly on their phones anywhere. They have no courtesy whatsoever. And they let their children behave like feral animals. I remember having my ass whooped in the parking lots of numerous restaraunts as a child. Today they would arrest you for that.

 

I think the reason for this is that violence has been completely legislated out of our society. Thirty years ago, if some jackass walked into a restaraunt and proceeded to talk loudly into a phone (ignore the fact they didn't exist) he would have promptly had his ass kicked, and the cops wouldn't have cared. Now, you can't ever hit anyone. So there are no rules anymore.

 

So in short, it is all in how you are raised. As children, none of us care a whit about making a scene in public. Those of us who are caucasian gradually had that beaten and nagged into us by our parents. Those of other cultures often do not.

This is somewhat true. But not entirely. I would venture to guess that Lil Wayne and his posse rev it up in a movie theatre and he is loaded.

 

I was lower middle class growing up. However my mom would have kicked my rear end if I acted up in public.

 

This sort of goes back to the Chris Rock explanation of being wealthy vs being rich. Lil Wanye is RICH! Not every white is obviously wealthy, but many African Americans, particularly those in the entertainment and sports fields, have come upon their money quite recently. They do not have the experience of not only having the money, but also dealing with the expectations that having the money brings. They say you can take the kid out of the ghetto, but you can't take the ghetto out of the kid (example Mike Vick). Counts the same for the trailer park crackers as well (looking at you Britney Spears). However, in many cases wealthy white people came from other wealthy white people and were not only brought with a different standard of living, but also different expectation on them on how to behave within that standard. I'm not saying it's entirely limited to wealthy blacks...in fact, focking Mark Cuban is a prime example of a white guy with money who I detest for his actions. He's a focking lucky kid-billionaire who was never forced to grow up because he came into money and still acts like an obnoxious child. There's a whole other discussion here on how many white kids of my generation were raised to be "seen but not heard" and how many black kids were raised with the idea that it's "more important to look good than to be good".

one of the focking scariest days of my entire life was watching Rocky III as an 11 year old with my 7 year old cousin in a theater absolutely filled with black people. in the 2nd fight, when rocky starts to beat clubber lang, you would have thought my cousin and i were throwing out racial slurs, only we were saying a fockin word. people were kicking our seats and throwing stuff at us saying things like "no focking way that little white basturd can beat Mr. T" or "fock that little white honkey, I could kick his little Italian ass". I don't even remember most of the movie, but I damn sure remember being terrified that we were gonna get beat to death.

That is the dumbest thing I've read in a long time. A black family loses a loved one and you think their wailing for the camera. How does it feel to wake up every morning filled with hate for an entire race of people.

 

 

I was at the Orleans Parish Coroners office about a year ago picking up a coroners report. A family had been notified that their son had been murdered and would someone come in and identify him. He was a sixteen year old gang banger who had killed another sixteen year old gang banger in broad daylight a year before. The D.A. didn't have enough evidence (no one would talk to the police or the D.A. about the murder, street silence) and had to let him go. He would be alive today, in jail, if one of the witnesses would have cooperated with the police and D.A. Anyway, I am talking to one of the coroners about my report when the family comes in. I'm guessing it was his mother, aunt, a couple of sisters, and maybe a brother. The brother goes in an I.D.'s the body. He comes out and tells the family the grim news. The mother starts crying, the sisters start crying, "he was just a baby!" No hysterics. They pass the tissue, do a lot of hugging like most do. Then the assistant coroner says," Watch this. The news cameras are pulling up. Let's go outside." So we go outside and channel 4 and 6 have the microphones and cameras ready for them to come outside. As soon as the doors open and they see the cameras and anchorwoman, the mother starts flailing around wildly. The sisters are screaming. The brother is trying to pick mom off the ground. It was a site to see. I felt bad for them. I see it everyday in this city unfortunately. But the moment the cameras were on, drama. As soon as the cameras were off, it was back to regular grief. The assistant coroner said it happens EVERY time there are cameras around. He advised me that next time you see a family being interviewed on the street right after the crime on T.V., look for the person being the most hysterical. They are always focused on the camera and where the camera is. Look for yourself.

 

As far as calling him a racist...... you are an idiot! He made an observation. One that he wanted to talk about and learn something from. That's what goes on here last time I checked. He even put up a warning about the topic. If you are embarassed about the merits of the observation, get over it. I'm white, and I can't dance.
