Social Security needs to be reformed immediately. It accounts for something like 21% of the budget, it was never intended to take care of people for 20-25 years, and virtually any private investment plan would make a better ROI. This was one of the few things I ever agreed with Bush on.

 

I'm really skeptical of a public option healthcare plan, mainly because it'll be written in part by private insurance lobbyists and watered down to the point where it's worthless. I do think a public option is worth exploring though, because our healthcare system is worthless. We spent a higher % of GDP on healthcare than most other industrialized nations for inferior care, and it's killing our economy. The costs of insurance are killing hurting employers, who need to offer benefits to find quality workers, and they're killing our economy by restricting the kind of risks people are willing to take by changing jobs, moving into new lines of work or starting their own businesses.

 

I'm not convinced the plans in Congress now are the right idea and I can't support one until I see a real price tag attached to it, but anyone who thinks our health system is fine right now, as is, isn't living in the real world. It's a mess, and reform of some kind is long, LONG overdue.
