PreK-6 Menu of Classroom Activities:

President Obama’s Address to Students

Across America

Produced by Teaching Ambassador Fellows, U.S. Department of Education September 8, 2009

Before the Speech:

Teachers can build background knowledge about the President of the United States and his speech by reading books about presidents and Barack Obama and motivate students by asking the following questions: Who is the President of the United States? What do you think it takes to be President? To whom do you think the President is going to be speaking? Why do you think he wants to speak to you? What do you think he will say to you?

Teachers can ask students to imagine being the President delivering a speech to all of the students in the United States. What would you tell students? What can students do to help in our schools? Teachers can chart ideas about what they would say.

Why is it important that we listen to the President and other elected officials, like the mayor, senators, members of congress, or the governor? Why is what they say important?

During the Speech:

As the President speaks, teachers can ask students to write down key ideas or phrases that are important or personally meaningful. Students could use a note-taking graphic organizer such as a Cluster Web, or students could record their thoughts on sticky notes. Younger children can draw pictures and write as appropriate. As students listen to the speech, they could think about the following: What is the President trying to tell me? What is the President asking me to do? What new ideas and actions is the President challenging me to think about?

Students can record important parts of the speech where the President is asking them to do something. Students might think about: What specific job is he asking me to do? Is he asking anything of anyone else? Teachers? Principals? Parents? The American people?

Students can record any questions they have while he is speaking and then discuss them after the speech. Younger children may need to dictate their questions.

After the Speech:

Teachers could ask students to share the ideas they recorded, exchange sticky notes or stick notes on a butcher paper poster in the classroom to discuss main ideas from the speech, i.e. citizenship, personal responsibility, civic duty.

Students could discuss their responses to the following questions: What do you think the President wants us to do? Does the speech make you want to do anything? Are we able to do what President Obama is asking of us? What would you like to tell the President?

Teachers could encourage students to participate in the Department of Education’s “I Am What I Learn” video contest.

On September 8th the Department will invite K-12 students to submit a 2 video no longer than 2 min, explaining why education is important and how their education will help them achieve their dreams. Teachers are welcome to incorporate the same or a similar video project into an assignment. More details will be released via www.ed.gov.

Extension of the Speech: Teachers can extend learning by having students

Create posters of their goals. Posters could be formatted in quadrants or puzzle pieces or trails marked with the labels: personal, academic, community, country. Each area could be labeled with three steps for achieving goals in those areas. It might make sense to focus on personal and academic so community and country goals come more readily.

Write letters to themselves about what they can do to help the president. These would be collected and redistributed at an appropriate later date by the teacher to make students accountable to their goals.

Write goals on colored index cards or precut designs to post around the classroom.

Interview and share about their goals with one another to create a supportive community.

Participate in School wide incentive programs or contests for students who achieve their goals.

Write about their goals in a variety of genres, i.e. poems, songs, personal essays.

Create artistic projects based on the themes of their goals.

Graph student progress toward goals.

Little Johhny went to his First grade Social Studies class and the days topic was the Presidential Race in 2012. After the lesson, the teacher asked all the sudents to raise their hands if they liked Obama better than Newt. Everybody in the class rose their hands except for lil Johnny. The teacher said: "Johnny, why would you not vote for Obama?" Johnny stated: "Well, my mom is republican and my dad is republican so that is how I would vote." The teacher with a smirk then asked: "Well what if your mom was dumb and your dad was an idiot?" Johnny quickly muttered: "Then I guess I would vote for Obama."

It is true...

http://www.ed.gov/admins/lead/academic/bts.html

Dear Principal:

In a recent interview with student reporter, Damon Weaver, President Obama announced that on September 8 — the first day of school for many children across America — he will deliver a national address directly to students on the importance of education. The President will challenge students to work hard, set educational goals, and take responsibility for their learning. He will also call for a shared responsibility and commitment on the part of students, parents and educators to ensure that every child in every school receives the best education possible so they can compete in the global economy for good jobs and live rewarding and productive lives as American citizens.

Since taking office, the President has repeatedly focused on education, even as the country faces two wars, the worst economic crisis since the Great Depression and major challenges on issues like energy and health care. The President believes that education is a critical part of building a new foundation for the American economy. Educated people are more active civically and better informed on issues affecting their lives, their families and their futures.

This is the first time an American president has spoken directly to the nation's school children about persisting and succeeding in school. We encourage you to use this historic moment to help your students get focused and begin the school year strong. I encourage you, your teachers, and students to join me in watching the President deliver this address on Tuesday, September 8, 2009. It will be broadcast live on the White House website www.whitehouse.gov 12:00 noon eastern standard time.

In advance of this address, we would like to share the following resources: a menu of classroom activities for students in grades preK-6 and for students in grades 7-12. These are ideas developed by and for teachers to help engage students and stimulate discussion on the importance of education in their lives. We are also staging a student video contest on education. Details of the video contest will be available on our website www.ed.gov in the coming weeks.

On behalf of all Americans, I want to thank our educators who do society's most important work by preparing our children for work and for life. No other task is more critical to our economic future and our social progress. I look forward to working with you in the months and years ahead to continue improving the quality of public education we provide all of our children.

Sincerely,

Arne Duncan

I can already see the headlines: "James Woods High School in Anywhere, Tx, a predominetly all white high school, has decide it will not air the Presidents address to it's student body."

I can hear the pundits screaming already.

Of course it's vouluntary. :Wink Wink: :shocking:

So the President is going to address students on the importance of education.

Why stop there. I want to hear Obamae explain to our children the importance of condom use. "Students, condoms are also used to prevent sexual transmitted disease. I know some of you put your drugs in them, but that's not it's best use. I need you to put that helmet on every time you lay pipe. I'm getting hammered on my abortion stance."

In all honesty it really isn't that big of a deal. That one day. In that one classroom. :overhead:

I think what people mean is that it seems this administration is wanting to constantly come into our homes and schools and tell us what to do, how to eat, what to drive, how to live, ect. It rubs people, especially a large number of Americans who value independent liberty the wrong way.

It's a good thing to do your homework, eat your vegtables, give back to the poor, save for retirement, be watchful of waste, and help the elderly. We just don't need the gov't to tell us how or when to do it. That's what seperates this country from the others and one of the reasons America is a place where others flock too.

I don't know, maybe some students might find a speech directed to them from the President of the United States as inspirational?

Deep Thoughts With Barrack Obama

" I was sitting on an old tire in inner city Chicago one day as a young boy. I noticed the tire was a radial tire, and had probably never been sat on before. I imagined all the places the tire had been in it's lifetime. How many gangbangers it had helped cruise the city with, looking for b!thes and hoes to smoke blunts with. I didn't see it bringing kids to school. It was at that moment, I decided it was my job to ensure more kids get to school on radial tires like that one. The children need me. Thank you radial tire."

I'll reserve judgment until after seeing what the content of the speech is. If it's simply to reinforce the value of education great, although it seems ironic to waste a day of education in order to get a lecture about the value of education. I doubt any kid is going to see this speech and have a light bulb go off such that he/she suddenly becomes a better student. I used to love assemblies. They were a great time waster. But I digress. If the lecture turns in to more of a propaganda speech then I will have a bit more of an issue with it.

Kudos on withholding judgment. I would guess that the Pres and his handlers will know that this thing will be dissected seven ways from Sunday so the message will be pretty bland. I reserve the right to be wrong about that though.

I tend to agree with you about it being a potential waste of time. I know my kids don't need the President to tell them the importance of education because they get a heavy dose of that at home, and I would just as soon they were using that time more productively. But maybe other kids might benefit from such a message. Probably not, but maybe.

Of all the things to bitch about...really?

I know, really. Wasn't George W Bush in some elementary school reading books to kids when 9/11 happened? I'd be willing to bet that there were a few children-of-Democrats in that classroom. I don't think he was brainwashing them with propoganda.

The President is broadcasting a message about the importance of education. I know that you Republicans are programmed to automatically object to anything Obama does, but take a step back, take a deep breath, and look at it for the harmless, good-message thing it is.

It's going to be okay, Limbaughists. I promise. Just calm down and go for a walk or something.

There were people against the space program in the 60's and 70's, but I recall them showing the moon landings and splash downs in school when I was little. Was this propoganda?

Seriously, is there anything you little whiners don't belly-ache about? God. What ever happened to your testicles? You've all become little bitches.

Wow! Your Obamacocksukking knows no bounds. :dunno:  :nono:

Yes. I'm comparing showing an event that was not supported by every American to open, young, impressionable minds, to a President, who is not supported by every American, telling kids the importance of education.

The two seem equally harmless to me.

Think about it. Turn off Hannity and really think about it. ;)

I'm good with my kids hearing the importance of edumacation from the prez. Obama has a history of valuing education (which I agree with); I hope and suspect that he will not use this as a pulpit to try to brainwash kids, but rather to push that agenda. Also I'm confident that I can deprogram any propaganda and focus them on the education/success part.

You don't like Obama. We get it. But seriously, you think him addressing your kids is "preaching"? What, is he going to turn them all into little socialists?

You guys all worry about the downfall of the United States. I say if this is a common mindset, if a speech by the leader of the free world to kids about the importance of education, in a country where graduation rates are abysmal and our kids are behind nearly every industrialized country in the world in d@mn near every subject, can cause this kind of consternation, then I say you don't have to wait for the downfall. It's here already.

You're an absolute idiot. HTfockingH.

It is entirely possible that he won't push kids to enter fields like teaching, etc. on the basis of their importance to society. But I doubt it. Anyway, like I said, I'll focus my kids on the education/importance part.

TV is bad for kids. I say we only have one channel controlled by the Gov't. Obama can make sure to show educational shows, and good eating shows, and shows about recycling and stuff. At night he can talk to us adults about world events. It would be utopia.

I mean, what is bad about education, eating healthy, and helping the environment? TV bad. Obama Good. :zombiewalk:
