cbfalcon 827 Posted June 14, 2010 Easy course in Fort Worth (Rockwood) but whatever. At least it was from the blue tees. Birdie 1. Birdie 2. Shot an even par total of 35 on the front! There is a chance I never do that again. My previous 9 hole low was a 38.... The back 9 is tougher but I managed a 42. 77! I got nervous as hell on 16. My hands felt tingly and I had to really concentrate on swing thoughts to hold it together. Then on a golf buzz, we decided to play 18 more. If I par 17 and 18 I shoot 79, but I bogeyed both for 81. This time though I was relaxed and excited as oppose to nervous, I made great swings but lipped out a putt on 17 that killed me. I think I'll be able to do it more often now! That first time is so hard and nerve racking though. 36 holes. Never worse than a bogey and zero 3 putts. 77-81....I also won $402 at the poker tables Friday, so it was a perfect guy weekend. Cruzer 1,995 Posted June 14, 2010 Hey, congrats man! I've played hundreds of rounds over the years at the old Rock. It was the very first place I officially played a round of golf with my first set - shot 75 on 9 holes, ha. That course has had many, many touring pros play it over the years. The 1st round of the boys city tournament for the championship flight is always played there - many started their careers covering that track. #10 and #12 are 2 of the hardest dead straight par 4's you'll ever find. Thanks! #10 always kicks my ass. I've made plenty of triples there over the years. Yesterday I managed to hit 2 perfect shots and have 5 feet for birdie but had to settle for par. It was a relief to get through that hole well. #12 I swear I thought it used to be a par 5. I've been close, but I don't think I've ever been on in 2 there....but yeah, those 2 damn holes have fairways that slope hard to the south making it tough to keep it in the fairway, and 2 of the trickiest greens you'll find on a city muni. 10, 11 (Par 3 up a hill right at the highway), and 12 is easily the killer stretch of that course. I got through it at +1.
Cruzer 1,995 Posted June 14, 2010 #12 did used to be a par 5, for many years. What I miss is the HUGE, old oak tree that used to sit between #1 tee box and #9 green. 10 grown men could walk into and underneath it and hang out..... The 3 nine, the Blue nine was prolly my favorite nine out there. They closed it few years back to make room for the 1st teem program. Man that track was hard: 243 yard uphill par 3, a 600 yard doggleg right part 5, 4 holes along the river - was nice.

Cruzer 1,995 Posted June 14, 2010 Yea, the city never really pumped any money into it all. But in the spring, after the rains, it was usually in pretty good shape. Even though it usually ate my lunch bcoz I draw the ball - I sure enjoyed playing it. That 2nd hole par 3 was about the hardest par 3 I've played in my life, anywhere. IAMWood 6 Posted June 14, 2010 I shot a 104 at the Newport Dunes Golf Course in Port Aransas last Thursday. I shot a 59 on the front 9 and a respectable 45 on the back. I haven't played or gone to the range since last summer. I got a 10 on one hole on the front. Very demanding course right off the coast with views of the beach on some holes and a constant high coastal wind the whole time. Every shot was a chore with a listed 10.5 on the stimp meter. Did par the #1 handicap hole with a solid drive and solid 3 wood to the par 4 green. Not a forgiving course at all, no rough and your ball was gone if you hit there, no trees to kick it back in or hit out of. I highly recommend playing there if anyone is in that area. Beautiful layout and fairly priced.

Thanks! I've never played any courses that are of current PGA quality. Before this I'd shot a couple of 80's, but probably considered my best round to be an 81 at Fossil Creek, which is an Arnold Palmer designed course in NW Fort Worth. Breaking 80 for the first time is a buzz. I feel like a conquering hero. I keep telling my wife this is a bigger deal than having a kid (we are due in Sept) because only 1% of golfers ever break 80, but tons of people have kids. I stand by it. phillybear 366 Posted June 14, 2010 because only 1% of golfers ever break 80 Really? 1%? I've shot in high 70's before, a couple of times, but that was back when I was sneaking onto courses during summers of my youth. I regressed to shooting mid to high 80's due to inactivity and now I haven't picked up the sticks in 6 or 7 years. Suddenly, I'm getting an itch, and it's not from my crotch. Cruzer 1,995 Posted June 14, 2010 Playing Fossil Creek Thursday - good track, but the pace of play is so slow there. Plus, they only sell tall boys - hate that.........If you want to play a top caliber course, look into Texas Star - it's in Euless. It's a really nice track, beautiful bentgrass greens, and tough. They've hosted a few qualifiers and various state amateur championships there. It's a bit pricey - but you can get discounted rates in the afternoons. Also try www.golfq.com - they have specials there too.

That rate of play makes shaving strokes off the handicap very difficult. And I've still never had a hole in one.

jets24 6 Posted June 16, 2010 Well done sir. That's some good playing. This is a quick funny story... I was in a foursome last week and me and my buddy Rob were taking on the other two guys. On one of the holes, they were finally going to win a hole. It was a par 5 and Rob and I were both short of the green. Rob is there in four and I am there in three. The guys we were playing against are both on the green with birdie putts and talking smack for the first time all day. Rob hits his fifth shot from 110 yards out and it bounces two or three times and rolls into the cup. The guys are standing there with their jaws open, pissed off but still feeling solid. I go next. I'm about 75 yards out and I swing a huge sweeping sand wedge that goes as high as you could hit it. The freaking ball comes down and goes directly into the cup, hits Robs ball that was already in there and bounces straight up and comes back down about lands about three feet from the hole. I almost wet myself. The chances of both guys knocking it in, especially the way my ball went in and bounced. Pretty cool.

I'm stuck in a rotation consisting of 5 of the 6 Fort Worth Muni's (never play Sycamore), Cross Timbers, Hawks Creek, Willow Springs, and Prairie Lakes. A week after going 77-81 at Rockwood I blew up to shoot an 86 (46-40) at Pecan Valley River. The backside 40 included making triple on the par 3 17th hole. Golf is so funny. I went to school with the Lindsey family who owns Willow - played there thousands of times since '78. Was there Sunday as a matter of fact - still know everybody there pretty well. I just recently got on golfq but haven't used any coupons from the sight yet. There are some good ones though so I'll be using them a lot this summer I hope. Iron Horse....Played a scramble there a few years back before I knew how to hit the ball straight. Seemed like the narrowest course of all time to me back then. Lyndsey family...One of them taught me in school. And mom knew the whole family well, as she is a home health nurse and saw one of them a lot back in the 90s. She used to get me free coupons for the course all the time, but that was before I was serious enough about golf to fully take advantage.
WhiteWonder 2,881 Posted June 23, 2010 how about golfnow.com? i tried that out last week and played a pretty nice semi private CC for 50% greens fees, including cart. also to continue some driver discussion from that other thread, i hit some guys titleist D2 last night at the range, the older one with the elongated head. He was interested in my Callaway so we swapped for a few swings. i really hated looking down at the titleist but i hit it dead straight about 270 carry. My Callaway goes as far but isn't consistantly straight like i hit this club. Was only 3-4 shots though.
Cruzer 1,995 Posted June 23, 2010 Iron Horse....Played a scramble there a few years back before I knew how to hit the ball straight. Seemed like the narrowest course of all time to me back then. I.H. is a bit tight, but it's also pretty short with room to hit it. You really want to see tight now, play Bear Creek East - that course is a biatch! The West is too there, both are pretty hard. Lyndsey family...One of them taught me in school. It was prolly Eric - he is the youngest of the 4 kids. Saw him the other day, we used to play together back in the day. Think he still teaches at Northwest, but he doens't play much anymore. One of my really good friends just got a divorce from the younger sister - she is pretty hot and a pretty decent golfer. Shame it didn't work out, but she is banking the bucks!

Shame it didn't work out, but she is banking the bucks! It was a woman that taught me at Saginaw Elementary, then again at Boswell High School. High School was 14 years ago, but if guessing I'd say she is 60ish now. I know she was Willow related though. Bear Creek...I heard one of the courses greens are fried so bad that anyone that plays it gets a voucher. Now that I am a total badass that has shot in the 70's once, I'll have to step up and play some of these tougher courses more often. I tend to be cheap with my golf but golfq.com looks to be capable of making some things happen for me.
cbfalcon 827 Posted June 28, 2010 I broke 80 again! Shot a 79 (38-41) at Rockwood (yes, same course). I had an uphill 8 foot birdie putt on 18 for another 77, but blew it 3 feet by the hole and blew the delicate comebacker. Still, a 77 and 79 in the past 3 weeks after never breaking 80 before. I had four 3-putts (whereas I had zero when I shot 77) so I could easily have been a few strokes better. Now I need to do it on another course. I have a kid coming in September and am expecting my game to lose some of it's consistency but I'd love to be able to say I'd shot in the 70's on a handful of courses before that day comes. cbfalcon 827 Posted July 5, 2011 1 year later bump. After breaking 80 twice last June, my game deteriorated. I had a kid in September, so that's the obvious reason. But this weekend out of nowhere I got it going again. Prairie Lakes golf course on Grand Prairie. Fairly tough track for my level of golfer. Water on about probably 13 of the 18 holes. Greens with enough undulation that there are zero straight putts. Enough trees that you can't fire at greens if you miss the fairway. So it's a legit course for my level of golfer. Made a back swing adjustment on the range before the round. I shot a 42 on the front. Felt good overall, but after a par, par, par start, I followed with a triple then double bogey to undo all of my good deeds. Got to the 10th I decided to choke down about an inch on the driver for a little extra control. Striped my first drive 260 and down the middle. Then it was on. Went with that the rest of the day and played the backside at +1. 1 birdie, 2 bogeys, and 6 pars. I missed a stinking 2 footer for par on the 14th. Didn't know it at the time, but that cost me an even par backside. Par 71. Went 42-36 for a 78. With the exception of the triple and double on 4 and 5, I played the other 16 holes at +2. Much tougher course than my 77 last summer, so I easily consider this my best round yet. And it came out of nowhere as my last 8 rounds had ranged from 86 to 89. Now I've shot in the 70's 3 times. Now that my 9 month old is old enough to raise herself, I should be able to get out more and work on getting my 12 handicap down into single digits!
