Anyone recommend newer SciFi/Fantasy books out there

Recommended Posts

I suppose I'm showing my nerd off here but meh... <_<

Just as a little background... I've read about everything decent out there for scifi/fantasy... all the Xanth, Robert Jordan's Wheel, The Dunes and sequels by his son, Ender series, Bolo Series, Raymond E. Feist's stuff, Simon R. Green's stuff, all the Star Wars series, the Forgotten Ream's stuff, the Drangonlance Stuff, Salvatore's stuff, David Drake's stuff, Kevin Anderson, Poul Anderson, Mercedes Lackey, SM Stirling, Jim Butcher's stuff, Bujold's stuff, Glen Cooks Garret stuff and the Black Company stuff, Joe Haldeman, Harry Harrison, George R.R. Martin's series... well the list goes on and on... I've read a lot of stuff over the years.

That being said.. here's my recommendations for newer great books of the nerd scifi/fantasy genre.

Scott Lynch's Gentleman Bastard Series is probably some of the best new fantasy I've read in years. Starts with the

The Lies of Locke Lamora and then

Red Sea's Under Red Skies

Patrick Rothfuss's - The Name of the Wind - WOW... that book... very very good. One of my new fav authors and it was his first book.

John Scalzi's - Old Man's War - (Excellent Military Scifi and you'll probably like it if you liked Ender)

John Ringo - GREAT author that does quite a bit of military scifi lots and lots of good books.. a heavy favorite.

His March Upcountry series... fantastic

his Legacy of the Alldenata series starting with A Hymn Before Battle is almost unbeatable as far as military scifi goes

I'd say watch out for his Ghost series though... a little out there with some heavy S&M/rape stuff and not for everyone.

Jack Campbell's newer series about a space commander that gets found floating in space after a battle 100 years in the past. I think the first one is Dauntless.... excellent military Scifi.

And of course Christopher Paolini's - Eragon series... horrible movie... fantastic book series.

Anyone have a good book series that you've read maybe you could share with the group?

Not exactly new, but if you haven't experienced it, Terry Pratchett, Discworld series.

Think Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, but much, much funnier (British humor) and more creative. The first book or two are OK. But then the series becomes pure genius. GENIUS.

You gotta read the Malazan series by Steven Erikson. Also, The Erye Affair by Jasper FForde is interesting, and quirky. Not your traditional fantasy series.

Ah.. forgot that one.. yeah I have read the Malazan series... except for the last one... something with "Dreams of Dust" maybe? I have it but haven't gotten around to reading it yet again. I'd like to go back through that series now that I'm older. I'm sure I didn't catch some of the subtleties when I was a younger reader.

Never heard of Jasper Fforde.. it's on my list! Thanks man.

Brandon Sandersons Stormlight Archive is pretty awesome...first 2 books are out. Supposed to be 10 books long. Once again a fascinating magic system.

Elantris, as a single book was incredible, IMHO, rumor he is writing another.

His mistborn series is also incredible with a great magic system.

Jim Butcher writes urban fantasy, very funny and can get dark at times. Called the dresden files.

Other interesting stuff, Sabriel by Garth Nix, a kind of underworld type of fantasy

Lev Grossman...the Magicians kind of urban and gritty and only gets better as you finish it (3 books)

Edited to add: The Black Company by Glenn Cook, it is a series as well.

Not sure it's what you're looking for but a newish writer named Brian Evenson reminds me a little of Kafka + a sense of humor. He's written a few good novels but he mostly does short stories and I loved The Fugue State. Warning though it is really odd.

Yeah I read both the ones out right now. Good reads. I'm a fan of Sanderson. If you like his writing style check out his "Mistborn" series. Good reads.

But I see you are already on that one.

I think you said you have read the Night Angel series by Brent Weeks.

Paul Kearney's series is good. The Ten Thousand is the first installment.

Oh, Anthony Ryan has a great one. The first book is Blood Song. The third installment, Queen of Fire came out recently.

And if you haven't read The Goblin Emperor, by Katherine Addison, I liked that one too.

Yeah.. reading transports me out of reality it's like watching a movie for me. I've seen enough of the real world to last me lifetimes.

Hey beer, have you ever considered trying historical fiction?

Often times, it's very similar to fantasy, minus the magic and dragons.

There is a lot of blood and steel type hf popular right now.

I'd recommend the eagle in the snow by Wallace breem as a good one.

Robert graves books are excellent. I, Claudius, Claudius the God, count belisarius, etc.

Some of gore vidal's stuff is great. I like Julian myself.

Oh I'very read a bit of that I think. I'll have to try to remember, but I think they were about the Roman legion.

Really liked these Leonard B Scott Vietnam war fiction awhile ago. Super good reads if I recall and as some one whis been though Ft. Benning boot camp, he was super acurate when writing that part anyway. The WWII one was good as well.

I guess the only non-fiction I've gotten into were war boooks: We were soldiers once, and young... some WWII non-fiction, but they were guys stories.

Clive cussler's Dirk Pitt series is fun historical fiction...indiana jones sort of way. 12 or so books in the series. Pacific vortex is the first.

The jack reacher series is very good

Vince flynn has an assasin series...modern day black ops kinda thing.

Black Company series is rather military in a fantasy/ mercenary sort of way.

Up and Down With the Rolling Stones by Tony Sanchez - http://www.amazon.com/Up-Down-Rolling-Stones-Rollercoaster-ebook/dp/B008B943MS

Ha. It was not an easy read and I struggled through the not easily translated French parts but no I would recommend it to anyone. No matter genre you read this is an incredible book.

Just a few pages in to A Hymn Before Battle. After reading a lot of Orson Scott Card and The Martian, my very first impression is that Ringo is not quite as smooth of a writer as I am used to. I seem to be adapting though.

I enjoyed like the first 1000 pages then powered through like the next 1000 pages, but never did finish. I'm assuming that book does end at some point?
