Yut. His days are numbered.

He'll be there in 2011. He'll be gone in 2012

Sox trade him by opening day.

He will be gone in the next 2 weeks. He has a lot of money owed but a team could put him right in as closer or they possibly could stretch him out in st for a possible rotation spot. Baltimore, the Nats. Teams that are going to be missing out on the lee/grienke trades. Wheeler basically makes him expendable.

Royals trade Grienke to the Brewers

http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=5935586

Former Cy Young Award winner Zack Greinke has been traded to the Milwaukee Brewers, sources told ESPN The Magazine's Buster Olney on Sunday morning.

In the deal, the Royals are reportedly acquiring Brewers outfielder Lorenzo Cain, shortstop Alcides Escobar and pitching prospects Jake Odorizzi and Jeremy Jeffress for the 27-year-old Greinke, 10-14 with a 4.17 ERA in 2010 after winning the 2009 Cy Young.

Royals general manager Dayton Moore had been actively shopping for major league-ready, up-the-middle position players for Greinke.

The Brewers were expected to receive another major leaguer in the deal. Jim Breem of the blog "Bernie's Crew" reported that player to be shortstop Yuniesky Betancourt.

I like seeing the Brewers active. Good for baseball.

Brandon Webb signs with the Rangers

I think this should work out well for the rangers. He is a former cy young winner and he is a sinkerball pitcher which should help keep the balls in the park. Add in the fact he is not really going to have a heavy workload being the 4th or 5th starter and he looks like a bargain.

IF he can get his velocity up....from what I have heard scouts say he needs to find SOME of his velocity back. Sounds to me he is in the Jamie Moyer range of 85 needs to get it back to about 90 or so...

I agree, am pretty happy with the signing. Obviously would of rather of had Lee - but this staff isn't exactly terrible with Wilson and Lewis at the top. The West is pretty weak comparatively speaking - should be able to contend again for the division and maybe another playoff run.

Cruzer you would have to love for these talks to break down. In the texas lineup thome could blast 40 homers

The Minneapolis Star-Tribune's La Velle E. Neal III writes that Jim Thome likely wants to "make up for what he didn't earn last season" with his new contract.

Thome made only $1.7 million in 2010 while blasting 25 homers over just 276 at-bats. Neal adds that Thome's camp "raised its eyebrows" over Lance Berkman's $8 million contract with the Cardinals. Thome won't get $8 million, but something around $5 million might be doable. The Rangers could pursue the 40-year-old if they're unable to work something out with Vladimir Guerrero.

Thome and Frank Thomas always reminded me a lot of each other. Both just GIANT men that in another time would have been lumberjacks. lol. Both are players that I have ZERO doubt did it the right way. If jim thome took roids some of his home runs would just NOW be landing.

Vlad got 593 at bats last year with texas and hit 29 homers. Thome got half that amount of at bats and hit 3 less. In that bandbox getting 500 ab's he could actually push 50. At the very least almost every time he has got 500 ab's in his career he has came close or over 40 homers and he never played in texas.

Okajima resigns with the Red Sox.

Okajima, 35, is 16-8 with a 3.06 ERA in 254 career relief appearances with the Red Sox. He struggled for much of 2010. But after spending time on the disabled list in August with a hamstring injury, Okajima returned to allow only two earned runs in his final 13 innings.

Good luck trying to fit him into this already stacked bullpen.

Omg, with the right field home run porch and the jet stream that blows out - Thome could go off in Texas. With the uncertainty of filling the DH spot - I'd definitely offer him a deal to come here.

It looks like the Rangers will sign Beltre. 5 years and $80m. Beltre to 3rd. Michael young probably slides to DH and can be the key backup at 2B, 3B, and SS.

Beltre seems a bit over rated to me. .270, 25 HR, 80 RBIs most years. But I've never seen him day in and day out. :dunno:

If the deal goes thru, looks like Young will prolly move to DH like you mention. At $15 mil or so year on Mike's current contract, that would pretty much close the door on Thome coming here, or even resigning Vlad I would think. Young was turning into a defensive liability and had to be moved off of 3rd. Not sure of Beltre's glove, but he has to be better. Also, Beltre was hitting 25 or so hr's in Seattle - a bad hitter's park. He should put up much better numbers in the hitter friendly Ballpark.

Very over-rated. He only does really well during a contract year. His stats last year are an aberration, he won't get near those next year. He hit over .300 twice in his career, both contract years.

5 years and 80m? Are you kidding me? Ask Seattle how well that contract (5 years 64m) worked for them last time they signed him to something similar when he was 7 years younger.

Bad signing. Beltre ONLY plays well in contract years. So dont be surprised cruzer if they just threw away 80 mil.

This is the one im more impressed with.

Rangers signed RHP Brandon Webb to a one-year, $3 million contract.

Webb can also earn another several million in performance-based incentives. He hasn't thrown a pitch in a major league game since the first week of the 2009 season, but the sinkerballer was one of baseball's best starters only a few years ago and the Rangers are hoping he can recapture some of that magic. Webb is likely to open 2011 as Texas' fourth or fifth starter.

Cant remember who it was that was arguing with me about weather he was going to be a starter or not this upcoming year. Appears not.

Reds general manager Walt Jocketty said Monday that the club plans to keep Aroldis Chapman in the bullpen for the 2011 season.

We'd love to see him get another try as a starter in the minor leagues, but the Reds have need a left-handed reliever now that Arthur Rhodes has signed with the Rangers. Jocketty said that he has no plans to look outside the organization in order to fill the role, so in addition to Chapman, look for Dontrelle Willis, Bill Bray, Matt Maloney and Daniel Ray Herrera to also get a look. Of course, Chapman was dominant as a reliever last season -- both in the minors and the majors -- so we wouldn't dismiss the possibility that he could eventually steal save chances should Francisco Cordero struggle.

Rangers would be better off dumping Young to someone and signing Thome as their DH. Young is not going to produce the power needed at the DH spot. Thome would.

Beltre is very capable fielder. He'll provide near gold glove defense at the hot corner.

I'll throw out a .280/.290 30HR 110RBI year for him in 2011 playing in Texas. Definitely a good signing, just for too many years.

youngs contract makes him all but unmoveable unless they are willing to eat a significant portion of his salary.

No way beltre reaches that statline tiki. He will fall back to his old ways of stinking it up once he is not playing for a contract anymore. I would say .250/.260 23 hr 80 rbi

He has a LBA of .275 and has only hit 30 or more homers in ONE steroid fueled season 8 years ago. Throw in the fact that he only broke 100 rbi 2 times in 13 years and I chink you are over estimating what he will do. In order for him to justify his salary he is going to need to mirror his numbers last year for the life of the contract....let alone the first year and I just cant see that happen.

Dustin Pedroia New Balance ad in this month's Baseball America:

"Tell me I'm 5 foot nothing

Tell me I'll be nothing

Tell me I'm just a nice story.

Tell me my first year was a fluke.

That my second year was a fluke.

That I'm a sentimental All-Star.

Three times.

Tell me an athlete can't make a difference.

How precious my time is.

Tell us what we can't do.

Tell us who we can't be.

One of us is gonna be right."

good for dontrelle. He convinced yet another staff to believe he can throw the ball over the plate orrrrrrrr anywhere near the plate.

Dontrelle Willis-S- Reds

Reds pitching coach Bryan Price said Tuesday that he was impressed upon watching Dontrelle Willis' offseason workouts.

The two worked together for a couple of weeks this winter in Arizona. "He’s been terrific," Price said. "I know he hasn’t been terribly successful over the last couple of years. But standing behind him and seeing what I see, there’s nothing to suggest any issue with stuff or command." If all goes well in spring training, Willis may find a spot in Cincy's bullpen.

Alfredo Simon-R- Orioles

Public prosecutor Victor Mueses told the Associated Press on Monday that Alfredo Simon is likely facing a charge of involuntary manslaughter.

The story is slowly coming together here. "The version that we have is that there was a dispute between two women and [simon] tried to dissolve it," " Mueses said, "fired a shot that ended up wounding a young person in the arm and that same bullet lodged in the chest of the deceased." If that's the case, Simon will have a very difficult time walking away as innocent. As of now, he is being held without bail and awaiting the results of ballistics tests.

The Mariners have committed to moving Chone Figgins to third base.

Figgins was moved to second base last season when he signed with the Mariners, but the usually slick-fielding infielder did not have a good showing defensively and should be far better back at the familiar hot corner. Seattle seems likely to start prospect Dustin Ackley at second base this year. That, or they could peg Brendan Ryan as a temporary option at the position

I am gonna go ahead and say that he will be a bounceback candidate this year now that he is moving back to where he is comfortable.

Probably .290/5hr/54sb/50rbi/75runs scored.

Kinda surprising. After signing AB and moving Young to DH.

Buster Olney of ESPN.com reports that the Rangers are "actively trying to lure" free agent Jim Thome to Texas.

The Rangers have committed to using Michael Young as their primary designated hitter this season, but Young could simply take half of his starts at first base and allow Thome to bat solely against right-handed pitchers. The 40-year-old posted a ridiculous .302/.455/.698 batting line with 19 home runs in 189 at-bats against righties last season for the Twins and would probably do quite well within the cozy confines of the Ballpark in Arlington

According to MLB.com's Jason Beck, the Tigers have agreed to terms with Brad Penny on a one-year, $3 million contract.

The deal also includes another $3 million in performance-based incentives. It should prove to be a nice move for the Tigers, as long as Penny can stay healthy for more than a handful of starts. He registered a quality 3.23 ERA and 35/9 K/BB ratio over nine outings in 2010 for St. Louis and he still owns a strong 4.11 career ERA and 1.34 career WHIP. The 32-year-old righty will be relevant in most mixed leagues this season.
