It makes me sad that we're at a place now where minor differences in policy opinions are regarded as serious threats to the nation. I pray that this was not politically motivated because our discourse is toxic enough without death threats and violence. I'd like to think this sort of thing would encourage pundits to tone down the rhetoric but I know better. It's sad all around and seriously, I hope it turns out that the shooter was just a maniac and not motivated by politics. I wouldn't want to see this kind of thing happen to anyone from either side of the aisle regardless of his or her beliefs. Reports are conflicting - here's hoping Rep. Giffords hangs tough and makes it through this alive.

In this thread, liberals claimed that Republicans are to blame because they're whipping their base into a murderous frenzy. In the new thread, conservatives are saying Democrats are whipiong their base into a murderous frenzy. Pretty much identical threads, only opposite.

Oh, I know. It happens in every thread. However, when we have people who are clearly sick in the head doing things, trying to attribute it to something rational is not possible. They are sick focks who go out and kill other people. Whether they do it in the name of religion, politics, Jodi Foster or their pet is really not that relevant to me. It is because they are mentally ill.

Mentally unwell, maybe. But having anger issues and being seriously pissed off at the world is not a mental illness.

Well, I hope that being pissed off at the world is not a mental illness, because I hate all people. However, people that act on that to harm those other people, particularly in these examples, are clearly mentally ill.

Mentally ill is a broad generalization. I think most people probably suffer from varying degrees of what could be defined as "mental illnesses." It seems like a cop-out to say "but they were mentally ill" when someone was able to be a functioning member of society for 60+ years and then suddenly decides to do something like this. Sometimes, people are just evil. Ted Bundy wasn't mentally ill at all. He just liked killing chicks.

I don't think that mental illness absolves them from guilt. I just think that you have something very wrong with your brain to do those things. Focusing on their trigger point (no pun intended) is the problem with the arguments. In other words, we should not focus on whether they killed because of politics, smell, joy of killing, religion or whatever else you can think of. We should focus on the fact that the person was focked in the head.
