Rep. Giffords of Arizona shot, Federal Judge Roll dead

without guns this sort of thing would never happen

A knifeman has killed at least eight pupils in a rampage at their school in western Japan. Officials say more than 20 other pupils were hurt, along with several teachers. Some are seriously ill in hospital.

There has been no word on a possible motive for the attack at an elementary school in Ikeda, a suburb of Osaka, about 500 km (310 miles) west of Tokyo.

Police say they have detained a man. Reports say he was mentally disturbed.

Media reports said the 37-year-old attacker climbed into a classroom, slashing children and teachers before moving on to another.

One schoolgirl described the attack on television.

"He [the attacker] came straight to us and stabbed the teacher. He [the teacher] did not say anything and collapsed," she said.

Police said he used a knife with a 15cm (six inch) blade.

:shocking:

At least five men armed with knives burst into the dormitory of a vocational college Wednesday and slashed nine students, one of them seriously, sparking new fears in a country on edge over a series of shocking rampages, many of them at schools.

Four students had been wounded in an earlier confrontation between the two groups, bringing the total injured to 13.

The pre-dawn attack took place in Haikou, the capital of the southern island province of Hainan, when five or six men burst into a dormitory at the Hainan Institute of Science and Technology and slashed the students, the China News Service reported.

It said eight were wounded slightly, while one's hand was cut off.

Two students remained hospitalized with wounds that were not life-threatening, the reports said.

Because it was a vocational college, the students would have been much older than the children targeted in a string of attacks at schools across China in the last two months.

The attack follows five separate assaults by lone assailants against schoolchildren as young as three in the last two months that have left 17 dead and more than 50 wounded, including some adults.

An attacker with a cleaver hacked to death seven ,children and two adults at a kindergarten in northwest China last week. Eleven other children were wounded.

I find it rather disturbing that this has turned into a political argument.

The guy was clearly nuts. If you accept that he was not a rational person, then how can someone maintain any credibility by suggesting the insane person's political views should justify pointing the fingers at any political group for incitement? If he's nuts, then he's nuts. To accept he's crazy and then give credibility to his political views in an effort to push your political views is the antithesis of rational thought.

This.

The guy was clearly a violent nut. The reality is someone was probably destined to die at his hand.

This guys life just broke in such a way that politics happened to be what determined the who.

And this.

What about the argument that conceal/carry laws discourages this thing or that if people had guns, they could end these situations? Apparently there were people there with guns, yet this guy shot 20 people.

And before anyone gets their undies in a twist, I support the right to own guns and carry them.I think it's unnecessary and the potential for innocent people getting shot is higher with them, but I support the right.

A person with a history of mental illness should never have access to firearms. I'm not sure if he obtained his illegally or not, but if someone sold this guy a firearm legally then there was a systemic failure.

To me, the biggest takeaway from this shooting is that we need to take a long hard look at how we deal with mental illness in this country.

Sensationalize much?

I think a contribution of loose gun laws and sensationalized violence on TV are the two biggest factors to the increase of violence in American society (especially by young people). You're free to disagree all you want. I can pull links with data that support this all day, just like you can find links that dispute it. It all depends on where you're getting your news...

One look at this motherfocker's mug and you can tell he ain't playing with a full deck. Crazy ain't so much left or right...it's just focking out there. Anybody who thinks this kid held a particular political ideology doesn't understand issues of mental illness at all.

And this is the sh!t that scares me more than cooky bastards with guns:

The shooting is cause for the country to rethink parameters on free speech, Clyburn said from his office, just blocks from the South Carolina Statehouse. He wants standards put in place to guarantee balanced media coverage with a reinstatement of the Fairness Doctrine, in addition to calling on elected officials and media pundits to use 'better judgment.'

My city is considering a vote on replacing their squad cars with unicorns, and replacing their guns with toys that shoot Skittles.

Who wouldn't love that? Who doesn't like Skittles? :dunno:

I might half-heartedly agree with you, but for me it goes MUCH deeper. Gun laws and TV are effects, not causes IMO.

But it's too late for me to get into it. Maybe tomorrow if you wanna have a healthy conversation.

Postings of a Troubled Mind

Accused Shooter Wrote on Gaming Site of His Job Woes, Rejection by Women

Last May 9, at two in the morning, Jared Lee Loughner typed a question to a group of about 50 online gamers located around the world: "Does anyone have aggression 24/7?"

He was back at his keyboard the following night. "If you went to prison right now...What would you be thinking?" he asked.

A trove of 131 online-forum postings written between April and June 2010, which were viewed by The Wall Street Journal, provides insight into Mr. Loughner's mind-set in the year leading up to Saturday's shootings in Tucson, Ariz. He stands accused of killing six people, gravely wounding Rep. Gabrielle Giffords (D., Ariz.) and injuring 13 others.

The online postings paint a picture of a disturbed young man trying to impress his peers and struggling to find a purpose to his life. They range from prosaic chatter about weight lifting to nonsensical philosophical ramblings that left some of the gamers who read them wondering whether he was using drugs or had a mental disability.

(I guess that's the best way to say others called him tarded)

At times, Mr. Loughner seemed to be reaching out to fellow gamers for help and advice, albeit in a disturbing way. Sometimes they offered it, such as giving him pointers about job hunting. At other times, his postings seemed so outrageous that the gamers mocked or ignored him.

(mdc?)

His recent online postings are more disturbing. On April 24, he asked: "Would you hit a Handy Cap Child/ Adult?" On May 20 at 12:03 a.m., he remarked: "I bet your hungry....Because i know how to cut a body open and eat you for more then a week. ;-)"

The postings exhibit fixations on grammar, the education system, government and currency, which some friends and acquaintances have described separately in the days since the attack. They are peppered with displays of misogyny.

Mr. Loughner seemed consumed with the outlet the private-posting world provided, says Mr. Montanaro, who was also part of SancT/Collab. Compared with the debates he had engaged in as a young teen, his postings were often nonsensical, say people who knew him in both settings. Mr. Montanaro described them as "weird poems coupled with 'logic' statements."

(gfiafp?)

On April 24, Mr. Loughner titled a new online thread: "Would you hit a Handy Cap Child/ AdultEven in a setting that includes the raw and often raunchy thoughts of young men, Mr. Loughner's postings were startling. They show an obsession with language, a hatred of the educational system and aggression—all of which later became themes of videos posted by Mr. Loughner on YouTube in the months before the shooting. In the forum posts, Mr. Loughner never mentions any political views explicitly, nor does he name any political figures.

 what they call disturbed, we apparently consider the norm

Wow, this is funny...Palin responds to all the talk about her and gets this...

http://blogs.abcnews.com/thenote/2011/01/the-note-obama-palin-and-arizona-a-tale-of-two-speeches.html

BOTTOM LINE: Sarah Palin, once again, has found a way to become part of the story. And she may well face further criticism for the timing and scope of her remarks.

Because I think you have to have at least half a brain to come from nothing and rise to Govenor of State (especially as a woman)? Do you even know what lemming means?

I wouldn't vote for Sarah Palin for President or even Govenor of my state. She is annoying and to ultra-conservative for me. But that doesn't mean I think she is a "dumb bitch". That would be me totally disregarding all that she has achieved. She wasn't privledged like most other politicians. You can't be dumb and do what she's done.

The Republicans propped up a pretty young woman with marginal (I am being generous here) qualifications to be McCain's running mate. One heart-beat away from the Presidency. Since then, she has done nothing to warrant the ability to be a celebrity, nevermind a "leader".

If you follow what the Republican propaganda machine has put out there, then you are a lemming. Granted, I was using hyperbole, but I would suspect that you get the picture.

Again, you are bringing Palin into the discussion and attributing potential violence to her when there is zero evidence to support your position.

1. How are they dangerous and what is your evidence?

2. Why should she be called on the carpet?

Within half an hour of the shooting, some liberals are using it to take shots at Palin and conservatives.

As the facts start to come out, Palin had nothing to do with it, the shooter was more left wing than right wing, and, in the end, was just a nutjob.

Palin calls bullsh*t on her being the cause of it, and liberals say she's calling herself the victim in the case.

:dunno:

While you can argue that things like Palin's map goes to far, violent and war references are common in today's society. Just listen this weekend and see if an announcer says "the Steelers are operating out of the shotgun to counter the Raven's blitz."

And, like it or not, it has become more common in political discourse over the past 10 years. Neither party is innocent.

But at the same time, a distinction has to be drawn between using violent references, and actual calls for violence. If you think that maps was an actual call to assassinate Representatives, you're being an idiot.

Critics of Palin are being opportunistic but that doesn't necessarily mean they're wrong. The kind of ridiculous rhetoric coming from people like Palin and Angle is over-the-top and contributes nothing but negativity to our political discourse. They should tone it down. Not because they're going to inspire violence. Because the world doesn't need politicians who act like the hyperventilating @ssholes on cable news.

Oh, and the fact that Palin's team removed her bullseye map from its website and starting calling the crosshairs "topographic symbols" or whatever shows me that she's (rightfully) embarrassed about her behavior. Good for Palin, maybe this is the first sign that she's growing up into a mature adult instead of the hillbilly freakshow she's been all her life.

She'll wiggle out of it. Palin and her acolytes are all white trash with a deserved inferiority complex. They'll convince themselves the liberal media elite - better looking, better educated and more successful people (i.e. everyone) - are out to get them. I thought GWB was bubble boy but he's practically a man of the people compared to this b1tch.
