NFL fans and the media have a weird obsession with the Wonderlic, the intelligence test given to prospective professional football players. Most folks care way too much about the test, when there's no guarantee that Wonderlic success will relate to NFL success.

 

But whenever someone puts a ridiculously low (or high) score out there, it usually warrants some discussion. Like Terrelle Pryor's reported score of seven.

 

Yes, seven.

 

That's according to Bob McGinn of the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel, who set Twitter on fire when he reported the score and pointed to it as the reason "why Terrelle Pryor made so many on-, off-field bad decisions at Ohio State."

 

Such an assumption seems a bit presumptuous, especially since the Wonderlic isn't scientifically indicative of how much merchandise someone will give away for free tattoos. (The jury's still out on that one.)

 

But if Pryor indeed scored a seven, it's a bit embarrassing. Vince Young once posted a six on his Wonderlic (reportedly) and he did, um, just fine.

 

Additionally, it's believed that an average score for a quarterback on the Wonderlic is about a 24, and teams would prefer a 21. But plenty of successful quarterbacks -- ahem, Dan Marino -- have posted lower scores than that.

 

Plus, as we all know, Pryor is a wide receiver.

 

And besides, as long as he's not scoring the exact number that JaMarcus Russell scored, the Raiders are probably thrilled.

Pryor is just plain ridiculous, Cam Newton is not far behind.....basically they are just good athletes that college coaches used to add dimensions to their offense, they are not quarterbacks.

 

Oddly enough, Tyrod Taylor may actually prove to be better than either Pryor or Newton, and he comes from the worst QB factory there is, aside from maybe WV....

I heard he retook the test the next day and put up a 21 or 22 (depending upon whether you believe him). He became a genius overnight!

Pryor is a loser but I don't put Newton and Pryor in the same sentence. Newton has the skills and ability to become a stud QB in the NFL imo.

 

I agree that Newton does way more so than Pryor, but Newton will still be a bust, he is still an athlete posing as a QB; but when you are an outstanding athlete you can do that.....

It may not be a gauge on the athletic talent of a player, but one can argue that intelligence goes a long way to being a leader, understanding the playbook and an ability to learn it well.

Ehh...i kinda disagree.....Ray Lewis, Chris Johnson, and AP.....all 16 and below on the test. Heck even Marino was a 15.....id say those guys are doing ok.

Its going to be hard to judge Newton his rookie year on a really bad team. And most rookie QBs struggle anyway.

 

Gotta give Newton 2-3 years before we can really judge.

Using information obtained from NFL personnel people, Pryor answered 48 of the 50 questions in the 12-minute test and got 7 correct. That was on Aug. 20 during his pro day before 17 NFL teams at Hempfield High School in Pennsylvania.

 

On Aug. 21, Pryor answered 46 of the 50 questions and got 21 correct.

 

The NFL average on the Wonderlic test is about 19, but the average for quarterbacks probably is in the mid-20s.

Dude, I got a 9/12 as well -- that correlates to around a 39 on the standard Wonderlic... keep in mind the Wonderlic is a 50 question, 12 minute test, so you have to scale the exercise in that link accordingly.

That's what I got too. Of couse, on a fifty question version, time becomes a bigger factor and fatigue wouls play a role.

 

I work at a college that uses the wonderlick as its assesment prior to admission. I've seen people who got a seven... wow. Window lickers indeed.
