Anything out of GB regarding the Grant/Starks split

Grant dropped in the draft in my league so I got him as an RB3. Just wondering if any coach speak out of GB indicates whether he will get the lions share of the workload or will it be more of a 50/50 split.

From my point of view Ryan Grant is being avoided and falling in drafts for a reason. We all know about the negative publicity lately but more importantly he's just not very good and doesn't show any flashes when he's out there. Starks looks like a very good upside back and I'd rather own him.

My take is different - first off Grant did not take the "league VET minimum" - he did however take a 1 million pay cut. Secondly, excertp from last night's game "Ryan Grant continued to dominate the carries with the first-team offense, toting the ball four times for a solid 31 yards." Interesting factoid was when Rodgers came out of the game, so did Grant. And C, this was taken from Green Bay beat writer "We can expect to see RB Ryan Grant not only at this year’s season opener against the New Orleans’s Saints, but continuing as the starting running back for the Pack. After last year’s opener closed his season with a serious ankle injury, coach Mike McCarthy is ready to put him back into the mix after slowly reintroducing him during preseason—a far cry from what he is used to after his previous streak of 51 consecutive games played.

IMHO Starks is basically the third-down back here. Barring injury, Grant will be much more involved than most posters here anticipate.

You would think so, same goes for addai, I have been pimping them both pretty heavily, but I only own each of them in 1 league(out of 7 or so).

I did watch james starks and his pitiful 3.5 ypc last season. Which is why you are correct and this should not be a debate. Ryan grants career ypc is a yard higher.

 

Also grant has been fairly durable in his career.

If you want to judge him and that 3.5 in 3 games, of which the one game he was featured was 18/73, thats fine. I look at a guy stepping in for 4 road playoff games against very good teams and 81 carries for 315 yards after getting those 29 regular season carries.

Realistically neither guy with Rodgers throwing and the potential sharing of running the ball are going to be worthwhile every week starters anyway.

All reports out of camp say Starks was the much more explosive back. He's clearly been saved this preseason by the team and spared the contact. And actually, for the entire season, he gained 3.8 ypc (including playoffs). He only appeared in 7 of 17 games last year because he was coming off an injury. He logged 110 carries and his YPC was actually better against playoff teams. If Grant struggles at all you're going to see Starks get more and more carries. Grant won't finish in the top 20, and may not end up with better #'s than Starks.

Yeah even if Grant had an injury Starks is not the type of runner to be dominant. Don't get me wrong, if he got 20 carries a game he'd put up good numbers in that offense. However some people are getting a tad bit carried away over a RB that had 50 yards and a TD.

Green Bay's offense spreads the ball to everyone, including the backs. They had a crowded receivers core and they add Cobb who is instantly productive. They had a talented couple of TEs, and they add three more to spread out the talent and add depth with specialty abilities (i.e., run blocking with Crabtree). There is no reason to think they won't do the same with their backs. Grant is a proven, now veteran back. Starks has explosive moments and is getting better at pass blocking. Kuhn is meat with ups.

 

Unless there is an injury, there is no reason to believe that one of these guys will be guaranteed to get more TDs than the other. It will be a carousel all year, but I do think Starks will end up with more fantasy points by the end of the year.

Prior to Grant's injury, from 2007 (did not start until week 7) to 2009 Grant totaled 3412 rushing yards and 23 TD. That production averages about 1,137 rushing yards and 7.6 TD rushing a season. This production was also during a span when the offense simply wasn't clicking the way it is now. The thing that kept Grant from being an elite fantasy RB was his receiving numbers. During this same period, he only averaged 150 yards receiving and was replaced by Brandon Jackson in a lot of 3rd down situations.

 

If Starks would be the bell-cow averaging 1,200 rushing yards and also be part of the passing game (400-500 rec yards), that would put him in the 1,600-1700 total yards and 10-14 TD total for the season. Based on these numbers, he would had finished in the top 5 RB last season. We can all agree that the packers are currently one of the top scoring offense in the league and his scoring opportunity will increase.

 

So before you start laughing, maybe you need to look between the numbers.

 

It probably is too late to try to get him if you haven't already after last night.

That 18 yard TD run will be shown over and over again until Sunday. If you are a Grant owner, you might consider unloading it if there are any value left. Maybe to the Starks owner?

How's that iffy? It's very possible as long as he continues to be part of the passing game and 3rd down duties. In 2009 Grant finished 8th overall. He missed finishing in the top 5 by 21 points (150 yards and 1 TD).

It isn't out of the realm of possibility, Axe Elf just seems to be a troll. The only problem with the bellcow RB of a GB offense is the no love at the GL. I think Starks could possibly finish in the top 15 if he continues to separate himself from Grant though.

Until Starks can pass protect, he will be in a share and NOT an every down back. This is something that coaches consider essential for any back so until he "figures it out" temper all expectations regardless of performance.

Last year, Starks did get a chance to be a featured RB for GB. Here were his stats:

 

Regular Season: 29 rushes for 101 yards 0 TD's. 2 receptions for 15 yards and 0 TD's.

 

Playoffs: 81 rushes for 315 Yards 1TD. 1 recetions for 3 yards and 0 TD's.

 

And that was with Starks starting. He had a whopping 3.6 yards per carry average and doesn't catch the ball out of the backfield (ppr?).

Ok, I am not following. I agree that Starks played well last night but there are still issues:

 

1. He only got a slight majority in carries (12 vs Grants 9)

2. He didn't catch any passes & Grant only got 1

3. The offense obviously will spread the ball around a lot

4. He only had 57 yards.

 

Yet now you are comparing him to a back who had 1600 yds, 13TDs and was the only real offensive threat on his team last year.

 

You have a reason to be encouraged but at this point I am encouraged to the extent that I can start him as a 3rd RB in some weeks.
