Joey Gladstone 33 Posted April 25, 2013 Don't forget Tim Ruskell. I still have visions of a noose around his neck and me yanking down on his shoes. Yeah, but the Seahawks never had so many high-character guys with 0 athleticism.
phillybear 366 Posted April 26, 2013 No need to focus on who did a nice job in the first round, since that's no fun and a handful of teams didn't even have a pick. Let's focus on what I thought were screwups or head scratchers. Guys that I thought were taken way too early: Barkevious Mingo, I guess Cleveland couldn't find anyone to trade down with. DJ Hayden, Oakland didn't trade down nearly far enough for the late rising question mark corner. EJ Manuel, wow, didn't like the next Christian Ponder in college at all and thought he was a tier below Smith and Barkley, and no better than Nassib, nobody expected Manuel to go before at earliest Jax in the 2nd, will Buffalo ever do something right? Guys I thought should have gone in the 2nd round: Eric Reid to San Fran. They traded up to get a guy I thought they probably could have gotten with their third pick. Justin Pugh to Chicago. I liked Pugh to possibly go to Seattle in the 2nd. He went a full round earlier than I expected. DeAndre Hopkins to Houston. They really wanted a WR and could have had anyone other than Austin. Slight reach, they better hope they got the right one. Matt Elam. I can understand the need to replace Ed Reed and Pollard. Slight reach. Guys I thought should have gone in the 3rd round: Kyle Long to Chicago. Gambling on upside, but beware huge downside too. I thought he should have gone about 60 picks later. Off field issues, flunked out of Florida St, played one year of college football as an offensive lineman. I seriously don't know why you feel the need to grab him this early when you are looking for safer, sure thing options. Travis Frederick to Dallas. Dallas wanted to keep Chicago company. You don't trade down for so little value, then have no clue who to take, then draft a center in the first round, then select a guy that would be there for you in the 3rd round. You could just feel the panic.
phillybear 366 Posted April 26, 2013 There will be 23 picks made prior to Seattle's #56 today. Cleveland gets skipped for a supplemental pick made for WR Josh Gordon. New Orleans gets skipped for forfeiting a pick for the witch hunt by Goodell for the bounties.

phillybear 366 Posted April 26, 2013 Honey Badger skips pre draft meetings with Seattle and Houston For a guy who might get drafted Friday in either the second or third round of the NFL Draft, former LSU cornerback Tyrann Mathieu certainly continues to make his fair share of news. Ands mostly, for the bad. A few days after he planned a party for Thursday (and then dropped those plans after receiving perhaps unfair criticism that he was billing himself as a first-round draft pick), Mathieu wasn't selected among the first 32 picks. Now, as we wait to see whether he'll hear his name Friday, Fox Sports' Jay Glazer told the Dan Patrick radio show on Friday morning that Mathieu didn't show up for scheduled meetings with the Texans and Seahawks last week. Mathieu has spent so much of his time saying he's changed from his destructive college ways, a report like this surely has to be disheartening to those who believe he can be a top pro player if only he got the chance. Reportedly, though, Mathieu was sick for those meetings, so it's hard to know what exactly to make of him. USA Today's Robert Klemko, though, caught up with Mathieu at a draft party in New York (so, he didn't cancel after all!), and Mathieu reportedly believed he could be drafted by the 49ers at the No. 18 pick after they traded up with the Cowboys. Instead, San Francisco went with former Mathieu teammate, safety Eric Reid. Then, he watched as the Falcons took former Washington cornerback Desmond Trufant at No. 22, the Vikings took former Florida State cornerback Xavier Rhodes at No. 25 and the Ravens took former Florida safety Matt Elam at No. 32. After that, Klemko writes, “Mathieu weaved through the remaining crowd and into a black Chevy Suburban parked illegally at the corner. He declined an interview request. His girlfriend, Sydni, clutched his left arm and rested her head on his shoulder. And they were off.” For now, Mathieu's future remains unclear. Mostly because of his past. *************************************************************************** Well, I guess we can probably cross Tyrann Mathieu off the draft board. Humble and contrite he ain't.
phillybear 366 Posted April 26, 2013 Move Tharold Simon, CB down your lists. I had him going 4th round. He got mouthy with a cop last night and showed a boatload of prima donna attitude, and was as a result arrested and charged with a bunch of stuff.
phillybear 366 Posted April 26, 2013 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jQmdSjO04UI I'm more of a modern rock guy, but, our draft starts in two hours... Oh, yeah. Screw ESPN. The NFL Network is superior.
phillybear 366 Posted April 26, 2013 A few pregame, tailgating thoughts.... Outside of SF bay area, it would be hard to find people that would dispute that Seattle is the best team in the division on paper right now. The thing is, I really like what St Louis has done so far in adding to there team, and I'm underwhelmed by SF's efforts in free agency and the first day of the draft. At this point, would it be fair to call St Louis the 2nd best team in the division, and as most runner ups in the Super Bowl, SF will struggle to make the playoffs? Trade up, stay put, trade down? I'm torn. Trade up and grab a guy that should have gone in the first round, thinking that you want to grab high quality players with extra picks because few of our picks this year will make the roster? Or...do you stay put, let the talent fall to you, considering Pete/John rarely trade up? Or...trade down, deep draft, and take high upside players so that they might hit a couple of home runs with guys that can surprise? Oh, the decisions are...surprisingly not stress inducing. It's so simple this year, after free agency. Add depth, add high upside players, collect underpants, profit.
phillybear 366 Posted April 26, 2013 Beyonce, the ugly member of some music group, who broke out as a music star/diva. The more times I see her Pepsi commercial, the more I become obsessed with the ripple effect of a stone skipping across a pond as I am with the fat over the top of her knees jiggling like she was jackhammering a sidewalk in New York. St. Louis could very well be a playoff team which could be at San Fran's expense, especially considering they were lucky not to be swept by them. I'm still kind of scratching my head, wondering why the 49ers didnt use some of those picks on Revis. Nnamdi was an ok move, but probably not one that will make much of a difference. Joey Gladstone 33 Posted April 27, 2013 We like to run. Lynch isn't going to last forever. Turbin is physical too. Washington is gone. They just took the best player on their board. Only real need is OLB and I hear they like Korey Toomer. Malcolm Smith has looked good in limited duty too. Still a lot of picks left right were Seattle does their damage. phillybear 366 Posted April 27, 2013 I think I may have finally figured out the draft strategy of Pete Carroll and John Schneider. Treat every single draft pick like it is a 5th round pick. 1st round? No problem. Grab somebody that would go in the 5th round. 2nd round? 5th round value. 3rd round? Take a 5th round project. Do they like to draft projects? No. They LOOOOOOOOVE it. Can't get enough of projects. So, instead of selecting players that have a remote chance of competing for a starting job, we got cripples and head cases. Oh, we have backups like nobody's business. Christine Michael. Girl name. Often injured, fought with his coaches in college, overslept at the combine, didn't play much his senior year. What's not to like? Jordan Hill. "effort guy", whatever the fock that means. I suppose that means he got a participation trophy. Gets pushed around easily at the line of scrimmage. Comes with a knee brace. Whoo. Hoo. I'll feel better when we arrive at the 5th round. Kopy 559 Posted April 27, 2013 You all said the same thing about a certain 3rd round QB last year. Therefore, I'm even more stoked about these picks! I absolutely love the Jordan Hill pick. I think you guys will too, and maybe even Philly can come around on him. But I'm gonna stick by my guns on Michael. As much as I like our third round pick, I'm a complete 180 on our second rounder. I HATE the pick. Not the selection of the RB, but the selection of the kid himself. If he's on our roster 2 years from I'll pretend to eat my hat. Hate'm Hate'm Hate'm! Wasted high draft pick. phillybear 366 Posted April 27, 2013 You all said the same thing about a certain 3rd round QB last year. Therefore, I'm even more stoked about these picks! I liked the trade down and getting extra picks. That was fine. But I'm trying to figure out the roles these first two picks will play. I understand drafting for a unique roster or scheme, but I'm baffled. Baffled, I say. A RB that I guess had good metrics but who will ride the pine as long as Lynch and Turbin are healthy. And an undersized DT. I realistically thought since we already have a roster full of little guys playing DT, we might take someone with some size. Nope. Eh, I'm not down on the abilities of Carroll/Schneider. I'm not crazy. But I just don't get it. :exhales: :inhales: :exhales: Time to put away the paper bag I've been breathing into since last night. Day 3, the draft comfort zone. This is hopefully when we correct the mistakes from yesterday and get some players. It's a nice day outside. My first drink has been poured. Inhale, exhale. phillybear 366 Posted April 27, 2013 Jordan Hill is this year's Bruce Irvin, but at DT instead of DE. He will come in on passing downs and pressure the QB. Much like Irvin, he will get knocked silly playing the run. Considering that we gave up a 3rd round pick for him instead of a mid 1st for Irvin, it makes it a bit more palatable. He's a part time player. Gotcha. Not happy that we focus so much on part time players, but, whatever. And 'Ole Girl Name I suppose is the RB of the future. It's weird. We must be the first team ever to start a rookie QB and then draft a RB to hold a clipboard for 3 years. Now I've seen it all.

phillybear 366 Posted April 27, 2013 Chis Harper, WR, Kansas St Converted from QB to WR in college, say hello to our deep threat. I like a few other WRs a bit better, but the pickings were getting slim. I had Harper pegged for mid 5th round, so the value isn't bad. Meh, an OK pick overall I guess. phillybear 366 Posted April 27, 2013 And there goes John Simon. That wraps it all up. I honestly don't feel like the draft can be salvaged now. Just my initial reaction. Just like our first 3 picks, anyone else we take may not make the roster this year. Every single draft pick is a question mark to make this roster. Take that as good news or bad news. I'm not outraged, really, I'm not. I'm just disappointed as this felt like a great opportunity that slipped away, like the Atlanta playoff game. Meanwhile, San Fran is having an excellent draft. St Louis is having an excellent draft. Arizona is having an excellent draft. Seattle? Not so much. At least free agency was fun.

Kopy 559 Posted April 27, 2013 Quinton Patten to San Francisco. Really thought it was gonna be Patton there. I'm alittle bummed. I do like Harper, but my initial thoughts on him was he had to sit for a year, and play spot duty year 1. With Harvin,Rice,Baldwin, and Tate, I guess he can. Patten was, is alittle better though, and he would have been great immediatly. But it's a pick I'm gonna be O.K. with.
