edjr 5,567 Posted August 5, 2013 The second shark attack in four days has forced the closure of two beaches on the Hawaii island of Maui, officials said Wednesday. A woman was bitten as she enjoyed an early morning swim about 30 feet from the shore of the rocky point at Ulua Beach Park on Maui at around 8:30 a.m. Clarence Yamamoto, Maui chief for The Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR) would not reveal the extent of her injuries, but told The Maui News that she had been able to swim to shore after the attack. She was bitten in her upper torso according to NBC affiliate in Honolulu, KHNL. Yamamoto added that there had been “limited visibility” in the water and the woman had been unable to identify the species of shark. In response, authorities then closed the beaches from Polo Beach Park to the Mana Kai Maui Resort in the Kihei-Wailea area. Officials will evaluate Thursday whether it is safe to reopen them. The attack was the second in just three days off the Hawaiian islands. Kiowa Gatewood was surfing off Oahu’s White Plains Beach, Sunday afternoon, when he spotted, what he thinks was a Tiger Shark. “I was sitting on my board, when all of a sudden I saw this shark come out of the water and grab my leg,” the 19-year-old told KHNL, Monday. “From there, I had this instinct to like, hit it with my left hand and then it let go and turned around and swam away.” He underwent surgery on his left knee and upper calf and has now started rehab. "Sharks can bite hard," he said, but he added that he plans to surf again. According to the website Hawaiisharks.com, there have been nine shark attacks off Maui within the past year. RLLD 3,455 Posted August 5, 2013 There was a great article in Esquire a few months back about sharks off the coat of Africa, but it touched on how shark sighting, and attacks, are rising pretty starkly. The article on Africa focused on the bull shark and how it began to adapt its hunting style to coincide with the surfers activities, which resulted in something like 5 attacks in less than three months. The Moz 69 Posted August 5, 2013 Have yet to see a shark in Costa Rica when I go ever year. I saw a few when I used to surf in The San Diego/Oceanside area back in High school / early college (when we lived in Vegas) . Biggest shark I saw was the 1 time I went out on Cape Hatteras in NC - no clue what kind but it looked at least about 9-10 feet long.

The Moz 69 Posted August 5, 2013 Yikes! Shark Week Sharks kill 4 people a year. Sharks rarely kill people (except for Great Whites and Bull's even they kill less than 1/2) It's not the death it getting chunks ripped out of you legs and sides and lost arms and legs as well. The only shark that actually eats the human flesh is the Bull shark but they are smallish and have to hit you multiple times to kill you.
wiffleball 4,646 Posted August 5, 2013 Sharks confuse me. They're like Toddlers; They'll put any focking thing in their mouth. We shop, prepare, plate our food - Sharks are like "Well, it MIGHT be food, let me attack it with my ginormous jaws. Nope - it's a buoy, well live and learn." I mean, those fockers are the Apex Predators of the deep. You'd think they'd be a little more discerning. You don't see Lions and Tigers just running around biting things will-nilly. They plan shiit out - They organize, figure out what they want to eat - BEFORE they even start hunting. Sharks are more like Phillybear at a buffet - just shoving whatever in their mouth. -" MAAAAHHH NOM NOM! Food! - Pfft - Sterno canister - not food. NOM NOM FOOD - serving tongs - not food." I'm just saying that while I think sharks are bad-ass, they really need to learn to sit back and watch a few pitches fly past them. Have a little dignity for pete's sake - plenty of fish in the - well, you know.

wiffleball 4,646 Posted August 5, 2013 People don't just float around africa looking like gazells. It's not just people though. Like the ocean, Africa is filled with animals - food. Tigers are cool about it - sharks are spazzes. Once a Tiger bites into something - it doesn't get away. Though, I did read that Tigers and whatnot start eating at the softest part - the Anus. Which would make them literal turd-slurpers. And seems like a perfect way for Bernie Maddoff to spend his last few minutes on earth. Just him, a couple hongry tigers and a bottle of A-1 shoved up his butt.

Patriotsfatboy1 1,432 Posted August 6, 2013 There are more sharks up here than in the past. Before last year, the most northerly shark attack was in Buzzards Bay, MA. Now we are seeing more sharks close to shore as they follow a huge seal population north. They closed Marconi Beach (Wellfleet, MA - on Cape Cod) after a shark was spotted 30 feet off shore. We have a house in Wellfleet and, up until about 5 years ago, we NEVER saw seals there. Now we see dozens on both the ocean and bay side all the time. At least the sharks don't go on the bay side (yet).

The Moz 69 Posted August 6, 2013 I think the shark that attacked the women's torso was thought to be a 25 footer. We are going to need a bigger boat. Was it a Megaladon? or focking Jaws? I think the largest recorded Great White was 22 feet and with that the largest shark in the ocean other than a whale shark (which has not teef) - I really doubt it was that big. Average Bull is 5-6 feet mature Tiger Shark like 8-14 feet mature Hammerhead - 6 to 10 Great White - 10-20 feet depending on age. Mako - 10 -15 ft. Sand Tiger - 6-8 ft. Those are the only sharks really known to attack people - Great Whites only are really known to attack in Northern waters in The US - mostly Northern Cali and Oregon and in South Africa ....... Tiger Sharks are usually the main culprit in Hawaii attacks and most attacks that are fatal if not by a White shark as Tiger Sharks are known to eat anything where as most sharks do not like human flesh (great whites only bite once as they hate human flesh ... but a lot of times that's all they need to kill). Hammerheads are all over Costa Rica but in 10 years of going there to surf 1-2 times a year I have yet to see one and they rarely if ever attack unless provoked . Mako sharks are always so far out in the ocean unless you fal over board odds are you won't be bit.... Sand Tiger sharks in on most coast beaches and the 1 shark that is MOST around humans but the NEVER attack unless you almost literally step on the thing . Bull Sharks are everywhere even in a lot of rivers and by far the most aggressive of any shark but their smallish size allows most attacks of Bull sharks to be non fatal -- but if you see a Bull shark in the water try like hell to get out as it is going to attack you -- been reports of Bull sharks swimming in 1 foot of water trying to attack a kid playing in the gulf.
