Did you like the song, "Born in the USA"

Recommended Posts

if you want to look at music and lyrics as art - as poetry or literature that captures the predicament of man on both an individual level and larger socio-historical level - there is no better song than Springsteen's Youngstown.

It's folk-ish, so it's pretty simple musically - but the simplicity of the music coupled with the depth of the lyrics is pretty powerful.

Springsteen can take all his over-commercialized crap and junk it - Youngstown, however, is a masterpiece.

This is what I am talking about. Fantastic lyrics.

All it really boils down to is this, Billy Joel or Bruce Springsteen?

Any man that picks Bruce Springsteen is a fairy.

Peenie,

I'll try to stay on topic for you - no politics - I like some Springsteen, I dislike some Springsteen - Springsteen's allure (to me) is the lyrics and story-telling - that "analysis of the human predicament".'

I think you nailed it with Born in the USA - you kinda' "have to" like it out of pride.

If you've decided that you like born in USA bc you've finally listened to the lyrics, then listen to this song, this is one that women typically like b/c it's about marriage/commitment/ and the challenges all relationships face. Nice song, great lyrics message, shaky vocals.

Billy Joel is a much greater musician.

thanks Bert - that last line gives me the chills every time I hear it.

When I die I don't want no part of heaven

I would not do heaven's work well

I pray the devil comes and takes me to stand

In the fiery furnaces of hell

TD Ryan - I agree that it isn't one of his best songs, but I think it's pretty ingenious. He made a subversive song in the height of the Reagan era and managed to package it as a mainstream radio hit with it's seemingly aspirational tune. The satire was done so well it right over most peoples' heads.

Not a big fan (my wife loves him), but I don't mind listening to him here and there... Saw him in concert twice so far and he does put on a long great show...

I'd like Bob Dylan if only it weren't for his voice. Terrible.

I'd like Jimi Hendrix if only it weren't for his voice. Like him.

I'd like Tom Petty if only it weren't for his voice. One of my favorites.

I'd like Jim Morrison if only it weren't for his voice. Some good, some awful.

Get the point yet?

Have no idea on any of their politics.

What was your point again?

Peenie, Springsteen is a known Democrat. And because a large majority of the conservatives here can't separate the art from their views, you won't get any positive statements about Springsteen from the hacks. Politics is their life. They don't have the mental ability to see past it.

So only consider the opinions of guys who aren't known Obama haters. They will automatically be Springsteen haters too. It's how the simple-minded operate.

Separate the art from their views? Hmm interesting. How does one do that when the artist overloads his art with his own progressive political views?

Oh - I get it - he made an American Anthem song that was anything but pro-America for anyone truly listening.

As a kid, I didn't "get it" either, all I knew was the album was full of hits and Born in USA wasn't my favorite, but I didn't "dislike' it either and part of that was probably as peenie suggested - you felt like you had to like it out of pride.

I think that is a big part of the allure of Springsteen. You don't get cheated. Whether it is lyrics in a song, an individual song or a show that goes 4 hours, he gives it everything that he has. Music should be about how it makes you feel and how it brings out emotions in you. There are plenty of people with excellent voices who sing cookie-cutter songs or lip-sync. Are they good "musicians"? Not in my book.

My point is you're a focking retard if you focus on one perceived flaw of a great artist. Learn to appreciate them for what they have to offer, be it amazing lyrics, great song-crafting, awesome guitar-playing, etc.

You are probably right on that... I always think he sounds like he is constipated when he sings... Like I said, I don't mind listening to him at times, but if I want to listen to some music, I don't go looking for The Boss...

The truth.

If Republicans refused to listen to or watch liberal entertainers, they would all be broke.

That is why Newbie is proving to be an idiot, yet again. Worms ain't far behind. They are casting their own prejudice on us.

Depends on what you are looking for. He is not my favorite at all, but I get why people love the guy. :dunno:

So I'm a retard for not liking someone who mumbles lyrics over and over and over, and musically is nothing more than a rythm guitarist.

Saw the dude at Reunion Arena on his Born in the USA tour. Mumbled song after song for 3.5 hours (which is what everyone was raving about at the time "The Boss plays forever"). I started to think he would. Never got roped into another concert for someone I didn't care for after that.

Exactly. People aren't going to a Springsteen show to hear mazing vocals. He's singing the songs he wrote. And he happens to be one of the great American songwriters of our time.

For those that only want to hear vocal theatrics, join me in watching American Idol. Some awesome singers there. But that's not what Springsteen is about.

It's not a prejudice if it's 100% correct.

Feel free to answer the question that Drobeski and RP are afraid to.....do you think Jon Stewart and Bill Maher are funny?

I'm not a Springsteen fan, I like what I hear from him on the radio just fine but I wouldn't buy an album. I never had the impression though that his songs were super-political or at least that they were partisan in any way. I thought of him more like a band like the Clash where when Rey get "political" it's about non partisan things like police brutality or whatever, not really a political call to arms.

Can somebody who likes Bruce comment on that? I'm not asking Flahawker just piggybacking on his comment here.

Move on, Hack.

It's a thread about a song. You started spouting politics and had your ass handed to you because of it. Now you are flailing away trying too hard to save face.

That ship sailed.

My impression is that he used to keep his politics a lot closer to the vest. He was more a hero of the working man and so forth than he was "political." But as everything has gotten more and more political, you are now a commie leftie whacko if you champion the working man, so he has embraced that a bit.

They're comedians, not musicians. I asked if they were funny. Your answer is no. See how I already know that? I'm amazing! And that's the tie-in to this thread. You don't like them for the same reason you don't like Springsteen.

He played some Obama fundraisers for the last election, too. Believe me, he's on RP's most-hated list.

I know he was pretty vocal about being anti-Bush, I didn't know if his music got more political or if he's just a target now.
