Bowe Bergdahl, traitor or patsy?

Recommended Posts

I don't think he was a traitor. If you're going to betray your country, you'd bring along sensitive items/weapon.. You'd bring something of value to them.

Looks like a deserter, but who really knows.

No one, but it doesn't stop people from speculating and pontificating

I read somewhere he taught the bad guys badminton. Trader.

What do you think he got in return?

People are also leaving out that he had walked off base before but had returned. So it's not far fetched to say he did it again but got caught this time.

http://washington.cbslocal.com/2014/06/03/unit-comrade-bergdahl-was-that-one-guy-that-wanted-to-disappear/

WASHINGTON — Three former members of Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl’s platoon spoke to The Associated Press on Tuesday about Bergdahl’s disappearance, his freedom and how he should be treated now that he’s out. The interviews were facilitated by a public relations firm, Capitol Media Partners, co-owned by Republican strategist Richard Grenell. All three men said Bergdahl should be investigated for desertion. Army Secretary John McHugh said Tuesday that after Bergdahl has recovered, the Army will “review” the circumstances of his disappearance.

__

Joshua Cornelison, 25, who was a medic in the platoon:

Cornelison said Bergdahl was unusually reluctant to talk to fellow soldiers about his personal life or his background.

“He was very, very quiet. He kept everything very close to the vest,” Cornelison said, speaking from Sacramento, California. “So, after he actually left, the following morning we realized we have Bergdahl’s weapon, we have Bergdahl’s body armor, we have Bergdahl’s sensitive equipment (but) we don’t have Bowe Bergdahl.” At that point, Cornelison said, it occurred to him that Bergdahl was “that one guy that wanted to disappear, and now he’s gotten his wish.”

Cornelison, who completed his Army service in 2012, said he believes Bergdahl should be held accountable.

“Bowe Bergdahl needs to be held 100 percent accountable for all of his irresponsibility and all of his actions. He willfully deserted his post and he needs to be held accountable for that,” he said.

__

Evan Buetow, 27, who was a sergeant in the platoon:

Buetow, speaking from Maple Valley, Washington, said Bergdahl had asked him a number of questions a short time before his disappearance that, in retrospect, make it apparent that Bergdahl had been planning to leave.

Bergdahl asked him, for example, how much of a cash advance he could get and how to go about mailing home his personal computer and other belongings. He also asked what would happen if his weapon and other sensitive items such as night vision goggles went missing. He said he told Bergdahl that, as any soldier would know, that would be “a big deal.”

“At the time … it wasn’t really alarming” to hear Bergdahl ask about those things, Buetow said. “Yes, it was a kind of off-the-wall question,” but the notion of a fellow soldier running off during the night seemed so far-fetched as to not be possible, he said.

Buetow said he feels strongly that Bergdahl should face trial for desertion, but he said it is less clear that he should be blamed for the deaths of all soldiers killed during months of trying to find him. Beutow said he knows of at least one death on an intelligence-directed infantry patrol to a village in search of Bergdahl. More broadly, the mission of his entire unit changed after Bergdahl’s disappearance because it began to incorporate efforts to pursue clues to his whereabouts.

“Those soldiers who died on those missions, they would not have been where they were … if Bergdahl had never walked away,” he said. “At the same time I do believe it is somewhat unfair for people to say, ‘It is Bergdahl’s fault that these people are dead.’ I think that’s a little harsh.”

___

Matt Vierkant, 27, of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, was a team leader of another squad in Bergdahl’s platoon.

He’s now out of the military and studying mechanical engineering.

Soldiers from his unit and other units were wounded or killed on missions to chase down leads related to Bergdahl, he said.

Asked about the statement Sunday by National Security Adviser Susan Rice that Bergdahl served “with honor and distinction,” he said: “That statement couldn’t be further from the truth. I don’t know if she was misinformed or doesn’t know about the investigations and everything else, or what.”

He said Bergdahl’s fellow soldiers knew within five or 10 minutes from the discovery of disappearance that he had walked away. In retrospect the signs were there, he said, but there was nothing so definitive that would have prompted action.

“He said some strange things, like, ‘I could get lost in those mountains,’ which, at the time, that doesn’t really strike you as someone who is going to leave their weapon and walk out.”

Vierkant said he believes it’s paramount that an investigation determine whether Bergdahl deserted or collaborated with the enemy.

“It shouldn’t even be a question of whether, it should question of when,” he said.

Seems some of these paint him as a possible deserter...which we knew. But also not as bad as some make him out to be either.

But the right will continue to tear this apart...whether deserved or not. Why? Not because of any lives lost...but to score points against Obama.

What would your feelings/reaction be if:

- we had info indicating the soldier may be aiding the enemy

- we had a chance to get him back, but we passed on it because of the "may be a traitor" scenario.

- the enemy beheads him on video and the whole world sees it

- Info then comes out indicating/proving he wasn't a traitor

Would you give Obama a pass? Just curious.

Too hard a scneario to fathom?

The White House allowed the parents of Army Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl to take part in a series of secure video conferences with State Department and intelligence officials and senior military commanders, according to a published report.

The Washington Times reports that Bob and Jani Bergdahl were allowed to join the conferences remotely from the Idaho National Guard headquarters in Boise soon after their son was captured by the Taliban in June 2009.

A spokesman for the Idaho National Guard told the paper that the Bergdahls participated in up to 20 video conferences per year.

"Mr. and Mrs. Bergdahl were regularly informed about what was happening throughout the duration using video teleconferencing [with] various military and other government agencies," said Air Force Col. Anthony Marsano. "There was a great effort to keep Mr. and Mrs. Bergdahl updated on developments."

They should've tried him remotely while he was captured and sentenced him to being abandoned by America.

I still think instead of trading five top level Taliban terrorists for him, we should have traded five top level Bush administration officials.

BTW...during those years...was that when Republicans were all for this guy and bringing him back home?

So has he been charged? If not it's opinion and speculation. Nice comparison to a stabbing victim who could id her attackers though. Leaving a base does not necessarily mean he deserted. You realize these guys are not on duty 24/7 right? They get down time, or off time. And if they're not on the job or rerestricted to base, they're allowed to do what they want as long as it is within the rules of the base.

I don't know. It may not be. Now I can't speak for Afghanistan five years ago but it's not like they were in friendly countries like Germany or Korea.

I know when I was in Saudi/Iraq/Kuwait during the Gulf War -granted it was only four months not 12 years- but we didn't have any real "down time." We were on lockdown the whole time, we weren't wandering anywhere to mix with the locals except on few occasions when the whole company did so and that was pretty much only once a month for shopping.

We had essentially zero contact with the locals, just drove past them in super-long snaking convoys. And really I didn't mind. I didn't want anything to do with them either. Stay the fock away. Who knows WTF was going through their heads, but I didn't want it to involve me.

Obama throws Hagel under the bus for the swap. Color me shocked.

Hagel Made Final Call on Bergdahl Swap, Congress Told

By ABC News

Jun 9, 2014 8:55pm

By John Parkinson and Jake Lefferman

Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel – not President Obama – executed the administration’s final call to proceed with the prisoner exchange of five ranking Taliban detainees for Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl, administration officials told Congress today in a classified briefing today.

“They indicated [it was] Secretary Hagel [who made the final call],” House Armed Services Chairman Buck McKeon, R-California, told reporters following the briefing Monday evening. “It was the president of the United States that came out [in the Rose Garden] with the Bergdahls and took all the credit and now that there’s been a little pushback he’s moving away from it and it’s Secretary Hagel?”

Officials also told Congress that 80 to 90 people within the administration knew of its plans to go forward with the controversial swap, exacerbating tensions between the White House and members of Congress.

“They made it clear that there were 80 to 90 people who knew ahead of time about the Bergdahl release,” Rep. Michele Bachmann, R-Minnesota, a member of the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence, told reporters. “There was a sense of anger that members of Congress didn’t know about this. Obviously, if there is secure information — members of Congress knew about the capture of Osama bin Laden — and yet 80 to 90 staff in the White House knew about this.”

While Bachmann says administration officials insist no members of Congress were informed before the exchange, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid has repeatedly said he found out about impending plans from the White House the day before the exchange happened.

Despite the outpouring of criticism from both Republicans and Democrats since the May 31 exchange, the administration also has some defenders in Congress, including Rep. Jan Schakowsky, who cited partisan politics as the root of tension.

“I am so grateful to this administration for following through on what we all believed that we leave no soldier behind,” Schakowsky, D-Ill., said. “I am completely mystified and quite frankly disgusted that…there has been a demonization of the soldier. Every American deserves to be considered innocent until proven guilty.”

Rep. Adam Kinzinger, a U.S. Air Force pilot who flew missions over Iraq and Afghanistan, told reporters that evidence is “obvious now” that Sgt. Bergdahl deserted his post, and therefore any notion that the United States does not leave its own behind was negated after Bergdahl apparently walked off base.

“Now look, if it comes out…somebody snuck into base and abducted him, that’s one thing, but I think every indication that we’re getting is that he walked off his base,” Kinzinger, R-Illinois, said. “When you leave your country behind, the assurance of your country will never leave you behind is null and void. That’s what I learned in survival training, that this is kind of a two-way street.”

Several lawmakers said they expected to receive additional briefings from the administration in the coming days, though those discussions are likely to continue behind closed doors in a classified setting.

“There’s a lot of problems with the administration’s story,” Bachmann said. “It keeps changing, and it doesn’t add up.”

Seems either he is lying under oath, or Obama is lying when he says Hagel made the final call.

The article quoted House Armed Services Chairman Buck McKeon as the source for the Hagel bus-under-throwing. Bachmann talked about how 80-90 people in the Administration knew about the exchange but nobody told Congress. Well, except slick Harry Reid. HTH

Nor do I find anywhere Obama has claimed he knew nothing about the deal.

No one defends anyone. All I see are a bunch of people reminding you bellyachers that it's politics-a-usual and it's been that way forever and will continue to be. And that gets you Sallies all besides yourselves, because you want to give the impression that it all started with Obama. Wash, rinse, repeat.
