MDC 7,426 Posted March 28, 2015 Getting around $3K back. With Philly wage tax I pay way more than my fair share. I'm pretty content with my tax rate, my issue is all the grift and waste. I don't mean things like welfare, I'm thinking more of no bid gov't contracts and wasteful programs like DROP here in the city.
Magnificent Bastard 191 Posted March 28, 2015 What's DROP in your city? It's a program for police pensions in a lot of places.
MDC 7,426 Posted March 28, 2015 What's DROP in your city? It's a program for police pensions in a lot of places. I am paraphrasing here but it's a program to buy some city employees to encourage their early retirement. In theory it should end up costing taxpayers less than carrying a redundant employee for several more years. In practice though Philadelphia has had workers take huge playoffs to "retire" only to have them take another job days later. Â Google the director of education Ackerman in Philly sometime. She stole millions from the city but fortunately died soon after.
Patriotsfatboy1 1,432 Posted March 28, 2015 I was doing mine earlier today. Looks like I owe the Fed about $2500 and I am getting $75 from the state. It is usually the opposite.

Baker Boy 1,699 Posted March 29, 2015 It is interesting that no one said how much they paid in taxes, only what they did or didn't get back. The sad thing is that the amount you are trying to ignore does not include your "contribution" to FICA which was 15.3% of your gross in 2014.

Your numbers are off since the employer pays a portion of that. Â Effective tax rate was about 17% IIRC - higher than Mitt Romney. I'm rich, biatch!!

Giants Fan 85 Posted March 30, 2015 Ok, get this. I had like $15k reportorded with w2gs last year from poker. So, I am not a pro, I can write off my losees against my wins, and here's what surprised me. If I claim it all as profit and write off no losses, my tax bill was like $600. How can that be? Won 15k, pay 6 hundo in taxes, seems cheap. That's what I tipped the dealer when he dealt me the bbj. Actually, technically I tipped him $100 and "took him out to lunch later" where I gave him another $500. If I was a professional, I could write off tips. I think, but I am not. So, anyway I wrote off about about 11k in gambling losses, but my income from my "job" was like $700. So, after losses, my total income for the year is like 4k. I get $15 back from the feds and owe $18 to the state. Â But here is what's really interesting, since I won that money, I am technically paying taxes on it as income. Some of it. But still, makes my income for the year, as far as SS is concerned, $4700 instead of $700. Â I'm pretty old. I first payed into SS in 1985.
Giants Fan 85 Posted March 30, 2015 Note: gambling losses can be table games like black jack, cash poker games, video poker, slots, etc.
Giants Fan 85 Posted March 30, 2015 Now, I do have proof that I went to Vegas, and played hours of cash games at 2/5 as well as some wsop satelites where I did not place. I played poker and blackjack in my hotel. So, have expenses, plane tickets, hotel stay, etc., doesn't matter, not a pro, can't write those off. Â Once I file as a professional gambler, it becomes very difficult to write off losses. Particularly, if I make a lot of money gambling, like I won some kinda 1.2 million dollar tournament. Â But, just like a business, I can then write off expenses.
Giants Fan 85 Posted March 30, 2015 Actually, I worked as an extra on a TV show as a kid. Was like 11 years old. 1981. Taxes prolly came outta that check, but I didn't file a return in 1982 when I was 12 years old.

I presume this is working for your Mom. At min wage you'd make that in, what, two weeks?
Giants Fan 85 Posted March 30, 2015 Right. Working for my Mom. Then, ya know, once I had won the $10k in February, just kinda helped out when needed for free. Stoped billing my hours, for the most part. Donated my time, even leant her money, cause I'm a good son, but felt, at the time I could make more money playing cards, so I didn't "work" much in 2014. Giants Fan 85 Posted March 30, 2015 Matter of fact, she still owes me a grand. Her business lost over 25k last year. Â Long story.
Giants Fan 85 Posted March 30, 2015 i mean, by early March I had won $15k, last year. What kinda d!ckhead son would still charge his Mom $10 an hour to help her with her strugling business? I helped her cause she's my Mom, and her business is in trouble. Â Story of my life.
Giants Fan 85 Posted March 30, 2015 True story. Â I was about 9 years old and my Mom owned a little retail shop on a poular street, where each year there is a fair. Ya know, it's just like any other street fair, lotta sad ppl with crappy stuff they can't sell, but I would help my Mom, in marketing. She still has a handrawn sign I made when I was like 5 years old that says "Welcome back students." Spelled correctly, of course. I was a smart kid. Â Anyway, she had all this ethnic jewelry crap. Ya know baskets from Africa and stuff. But she had, that she had picked up at a trade show, a dozen silk, wind up birds. Prett simple device, uses a rubber band to flap the silk wings, throw it and it flies. Flaps it's wings and everything. So, the street fair was going on, I forget the deal we made, but I said I would sell out those things in an hour. And I went out, and stood on a table, and startd enthusiastically throwing it up in the air, in the crowd of the street fair, then chasing it down, and people came asking me where i got it. "That shop right over there." Â I won the bet. We sold out.
Giants Fan 85 Posted March 30, 2015 And my Mom knows. The day she can't go into work anymore .... the day the business is mine, pretty much everyone gets fired. Â Why would I want to own an ethnic arts company that loses money and requires me to travel when I hate traveling? Â I'm a destination guy. Fock the journey. Giants Fan 85 Posted March 30, 2015 Mom has been discussimg with me this valuable bead collection that she has. And she is known as a person with some very high end shiat. Like a drug dealer that goes and finds the best cocaine .... my Mom has some really good West African shiat. Antique beads, masks, wooden stools ... whatchu want man? Christian stuff? Cause you know they got thqt shait ouuta town recently in Mali. Suddenly, old Ethiopian Coptic silver crosses are available on the market again. But that's it ... Game over. A lot of the West African arts are being lost because of terrorists, and as much as we as a company tries to provide work for native artisans ... it does not compare to this influx of boca haram and al quaeda, whoever, I have lots of friends from Mali, they are peaceful people. Â So ... from a business standpoint ..... yeah, close up shop ... retire, keep some of your favorite old things, worst damn business plan ever. She's in Morocco right now, buying rugs. Â Apparently, you hafta see them in person to know what the good ones are. Sigh.
