Obama announces restrictions on distribution of military-style equipment to police

Recommended Posts

WASHINGTON President Obama is banning local police departments from receiving a range of military-style equipment from the federal government -- from grenade launchers to bayonets to certain armored vehicles -- as he implements the recommendations of a panel that examined the controversial gear giveaways in the wake of the Ferguson riots.

That will depend who is in office. The Progressive Socialist have proven to be very patient. They have no problem chipping away at a cause for decades.

So police powers have decreased over the last few decades?

Good move, luckily the criminals also don't get them too, so the balance of power in the streets stays equal..... oh wait.....

Does this really change anything? Or is it a public reaction media ploy? I mean when they call in the National Guard they all have this riot gear stuff right? At the end of the day this is more about perception than anything.

They are only taking away humvee's and rocket launchers? Probably a good option.

Military style weapons and equipment. Which I don't think our local police are trained to use anyway.

Rocket launchers? Sure of course. That's no brainer stuff.

But if we are going to ask a police officer to be on duty during a riot, then they should be given riot gear and riot vehicles. Or else we shouldn't ask them to be on duty at that point.

I hope the police get American flag pants like in Napoleon dynamite

Phurboy the Libertarian is upset because police forces can't get grenade launchers. Totally unsurprising.

What constitutes military style weapons? Just the shape or amount of plastic parts?

Anything that police officers or the general public aren't normally allowed to carry? But you find in the Military?

They lay it out in the article;

"the federal government will no longer fund or provide armored vehicles that run on a tracked system instead of wheels, weaponized aircraft or vehicles, firearms or ammunition of .50-caliber or higher, grenade launchers, bayonets or camouflage uniforms. "

I don't care much for the rationale, but I think this is a good thing. Haven't a lot of conservatives been b!tching about the militarization of police forces for a while now?

I agree with grenades, those aren't discriminative when you throw them off. But the rifles and whatnot are the same you can get at a sporting goods store.

Apparently it means helmets, shields, and batons.

In addition to the new equipment-transfer bans, a longer list of equipment the federal government provides will come under tighter control, including wheeled armored vehicles like Humvees, manned aircraft, drones, specialized firearms, explosives, battering rams and riot batons, helmets and shields. Starting in October, police will have to get approval from their city council, mayor or some other local governing body to obtain it, provide a persuasive explanation of why it is needed and have more training and data collection on the use of the equipment.

The bolded is retarded. Just more BS paperwork and red tape from the administration.

If that is all it is, then fine with me.

They do need the riot gear and armored hummers and other protective gear though.

Can they take the auto rifle off the back of the hum v and put one of those fire hoses on it though. Give em the hose!#%!

The Feds have a program where they sell very cheaply or just give away to local P.D.'s military equipment that is being retired. In many cases the local P.D. doesn't even get training on the stuff. And they've been using it for lower and lower level crimes such that just the presence of the military equipment for the arrest is disproportionate and scary. This is in response to that trend and is a good policy decision.

Another libertarian who trusts your average beat cop to decide when riot gear and batons are appropriate, and to figure out on the fly how to use them.

This forearm sure has a crazy notion of libertarianism.

We had a guy during my last reserve duty try to enter our building. When he was stopped, he requested to see the highest ranking officer. Fortunately, the guy he was asking is a Houston PD officer. Handcuffed him and called the MPs. He was babbling on about that bullshit. Found a whole bunch of meds in his backpack. Dude was definitely out of it

Anything that's purely defensive (armored vehicles, body armor, etc), that's fine for the cops to have, IMHO.

Offensive weapons, such as bayonets, armed drones, launchers other than for tear gas, etc, I'm fine with ending the government supplying those to cops.

Yep.

Shields and helmets being on the list is just dumb.

So why is Homeland Security able to have all of these weapons? Aren't they just police? When the last Super Bowl was played here, they were everywhere. And armed to the teeth. Every area where there were crowds, there was Homeland Security police carrying automatic weapons, armored vehicles, and armored aircraft. It was more a show of force than anything. But it was effective. local police departments should be able to do the same.

Perhaps, but does it appear to be militaristic? Did the military use them? Who cares if the cops are less safe, the important thing is that the mob does not fear them.

When 75% of the people stop caring about the freedoms taken away from them and the other 25% can't fight the good fight anymore.

The military and the police are not even close to being the same thing. Except uniform, gun and rank structure. After that they are worlds apart.
