I like revenge horror flicks, but now that I know that they’re called torture porn, I feel dirty. 🙁

Now I’m confused. I don’t like films like Hostel, but Eden Lake really got under my skin, which is rare for me. I guess because the premise could actually happen and there are people out there like that scares the sh!t out of me.

Have you seen The Strangers?  That was fun.  You'd piss yourself.

Is that the one with Liv Tyler? If so, yes, I’ve seen it.

I don’t think this deserves it’s own thread so I’ll leave this here:

https://collider.com/the-dark-tower-series-mike-flanagan-comments/#:~:text=Soon%2C King's Dark Tower series, promising update on the show.

I guess I’m late to this party, but this is excellent news. If anyone can tackle an adaption of this difficulty, I’d put my money on him. Very excited about this.

You don't think somewhere there are rich people would would do the things that were shown in Hostel?      Part 2 was especially creepy with the dude looking for somebody like his wife.

I’d think something like that would eventually make the news if it was a real thing. :dunno:

I guess I just think things like Epstein and foreign countries, and I place it at least as a non-zero chance of being a thing.    That part of the Hostel movies I actually liked, just mostly irritating characters made me not like it as much.   To be truthful, I'd probably choose to watch Hostel over Saw if I had to pick something similar in the genre.

Related to rich people getting away with things:  Infinity Pool was pretty good.

How about this - IMO my odds of getting kidnapped/tortured/killed in a foreign country like that > than me being possessed or haunted.

I like to think there isn’t a big enough audience for that kind of thing, but I may be naive.

I’m with Gutter, the only Saw movie worth watching was the first one.

Long story short, I guess I still get confused when horror fans rail on "torture porn" stuff.   I assumed that was more for non-fans giving the movies that moniker and poo-pooing them.    At the end of the day, I just like well made movies that have interesting ideas.    During my video store days I found myself defending a couple Saw movies, Hostel, and even Human Centipede.

I don't find some of the gore in Hostel THAT much worse than some of the worst slashers, and both are basically just the audience cheering on dumb characters getting brutally killed.

“Torture porn” isn’t a good description for movies like Hostel and Saw. I don’t like those movies but they at least have a plot. There are movies out there that are basically fake snuff. That’s torture porn.

I don’t like torture movies because I think they’re boring fwiw.

That was an incredibly deep and thought provoking movie which makes one examine one's feelings about how livestock is treated.  George Orwell's "Animal Farm" pales in comparison to this masterpiece!!!!

Next up is Audition.  It's been around for 20+ years but I never had the opportunity to watch it.

Streaming free with ads on something called Dark Matter TV.

Audition is awesome, but be warned the first 20-30mins are a bit slow and rom/com-ish.

A Tale of Two Sisters is another foreign horror I recommend a lot to people.

Slow build up for sure, but I expected that going in. Glad I finally got to watch it as it was excellent.

Who knew a video of a hot Asian gal with daddy issues could be so horrific?

RIP Gangu.

 As soon as I saw that cute puppy I knew it was a goner.

Now watching "Ichi The Killer".  Over the top and basically cartoonish violence.  Makes sense as it's based on a comic book.

Awesome movie. Audition and Visitor Q by the same director are also insane.

At least I sent him my copy of A Serbian Film.

I just fired up this happy go lucky rom/com.  I've heard of it but this is the first time I've watched it.  I'll let you know what I think.

Edit: :shocking:

Just curious, have either you seen "Train to Busan"?  It is a 2016 South Korean action horror film...  I came across a write-up about it last night and was wondering if you might have seen it...  It has a 94% at RT, but I always take caution with that...

Yes - I haven’t seen it since it came out but it was great. It wasn’t very gory and reminded me a little of World War Z but much better. Def worth the watch.

Just got finished watching it...  Yep, very damn good movie...  I am glad that I saw that article and asked you guys about it...

What about the standalone sequel "Peninsula" that came out in 2020?  RT has it at 55%...

I find Train to Busan to be very good and oddly overrated at the same time.  I thought the f/X got a bit cheesy at times.
