I've been trying figure out why that is.  The main answer seems to be that Ukraine has resources, but it's not like the US can't source grain and metals elsewhere.

Simply put, a Russian victory would make it more powerful and weaken the West, which is not a good thing. It would create geopolitical instability in Europe. If this counteroffensive grinds to a halt, I think what you'll see happen is Ukraine giving up some turf in exchange for Russia shutting the fock up about Ukraine joining NATO

Actually, a Russian victory would be a further boom to nato. Already Russia is severely screwed by the inclusion of Finland. You have no idea how badly that screws russia. It massively extends their Northeast exposure - not to mention the Gulf of Finland. 

 

Finland was hugely ambivalent for decades. But three months ago? They couldn't wait to join NATO. 

 

They sure s*** didn't want to be the next ukraine.

Ukraine has probed and probed without finding any significant weakness with which to throw their bulk of their men and equipment. Two months into the counteroffensive and Ukraine has but a few small towns to show the west for it's efforts. Clearly, Russian defenses are stout.

My fear is Zelensky feels western pressure to attack. And when he does he's gonna throw everything he's got. History hangs on that dice roll.

True story: My wife works in the medical field. A Ukrainian super model, Dima Gornovskyi,  gay as can be, came in for his immigration physical. He’s 30 years old and he won’t fight for his own country. Like a lot of Ukrainian men.  They know the score. Call up our reserves though.
