If you're driving through your neighborhood and you see armed thugs attacking a home, you don't stop and assess whether that homeowner has paid their HOA dues, whether the grass is consistently too long, or their RVs always over the property line. You rack your weapon and defend. Because you know that if lawlessness is allowed there, then it will happen again at the next neighbor and the next, until you're that neighbor.

Actually a lot of the old NATO deals dont make much sense in the modern world because they omit China.   The general idea is to tear up the old deals and make new ones that do include China.  The intermediate warhead deal was one example.  There is some thought that what is really going on is the demolition of NATO to include a new version that works with China.  Russia is just grabbing some territory in the transition period.  i dont know if its true but interesting to think about.  been hearing about it for years.

The general theory on how this is supposed to play out in the scenario i heard was:

1. Putin invades Ukraine
2. NATO goes ham on trying to arm Ukraine and defend poland, germany etc. making big rough talk.
3. Putin wins and takes Ukraine anyway.
4. NATO loses face (on purpose).  Lawmakers begin to seriously question what NATO is good for.  
5. Now they dismantle NATO and replace it with a modern agreement with a big focus on asia for the purposes of cutting deals with China more than Russia.  

Its a lot easier to do that if NATO proves to be a joke and cant stop Putin taking Ukraine.

 

This is mostly rumor although the deals getting cancelled in recent years make it plausible.
