Cash option is $600M, after taxes you get $300M.  Not a Bil, but enough to live on.

Mega Millions winners can either take 30 annual payments over 29 years or an immediate cash lump sum, which most winners opt for.

The estimated cash option will come out to $602.5 million, and the prize would be subject to an initial 24% federal tax withholding, or roughly $144.6 million.

The winner would also owe additional taxes at higher brackets, up to the 37% top federal marginal tax bracket for ordinary income: For a single taxpayer with no additional income, no dependents and no itemized deductions (like big charitable contributions), the total additional tax would be another $78.3 million due, leaving the winner with $379.6 million before state taxes.

The annuity option provides the full $1.03 billion in winnings over 30 annual payments of $34.1 million on average—but again, that’s before taxes.

While the 24% federal tax withholding still applies, it amounts to $8.2 million annually, and the additional federal tax (for a single taxpayer with no other income, at today's rates, which are likely to change) would come to another $4.4 million, leaving the winner with $21.5 million per year, before state taxes.

State taxes vary, and while some states don’t tax lottery winnings (including those with no state income tax, like Texas and Florida, and those that specifically exempt lottery winnings, like high-tax California), state income taxes can be as high as 10.9% in New York.

In some states, cities are allowed to impose their own income taxes, and in New York City the top rate is an additional 3.87% on top of the state and federal taxes.

Anyone else think the government should take less of lottery winnings? They literally rape you on the taxes of it. The real winner of the lottery is ALWAYS the government

A mathematician wrote on here once about the lottery. Imagine  taking a one dollar bill and starting in Miami. Place each one dollar bill and placing them side by horizontal from there to LA and to Seatle. To Maine and back down to Miami. And do it again and go to LA. Basically two and a half trips around America. Dollar bill’s lined up. They put a circle on one and you have to find it. You get one chance to find it. Picking only one. That’s the odds.

If we split the billion equally among the geek club members, we would each get about $100,000,000.

I’ve told this story before but it still cracks me up. My lotry storie.

So the Louisiana lottery is a year or two in. Had scratch offs and other BS, This is before powerball. The jackpot is is like 9.7 million. I go to handle five claims, mostly roof, in Houma/Thibadeaux area. I stop at a mom and pops convenience store to get a big  thirty two coke, pack of smokes, and a slim Jim. The cashier asks if I want a lottery ticket. Sure. My Dad always said go to an obscure place to get one. Got in the piece of sh!t Oldsmobile and put the ticket on the visor.

I go about my day after being on roofs and stopped at the same store on my way home. Bought a few beers and gas. The same clerk was there and asked if I wanted a ticket. Sure, why not.

Driving back I was listening to local tal radio and all anyone wanted to talk about was “what would you do if you won?”

I get home, I was living with my parents at the time, and I crash. Next morning I get up and the radio is saying someone won. Two days later they say it’s a ticket bought in Houma. Intrigued I get my tickets above the visor. There’s only one. Doesn’t match. I couldn’t find the other one and remembered I put it in my pocket.

So I go home and my pants were gone looking for it. So I look in the washer/dryer and there it was. The ticket was in the front pocket disintegrated. Me:Hmmm. That sucks. Oh well. Mom washed my clothes.

Fast forward two months later. It’s all over the news that no one has claimed the ticket. I call the lottery office in Baton Rouge curious as to where and when that unclaimed ticket was sold. Sure enough, the store I went to, date and time that evening. Told her my story and.she said some people wait. I’ll call you if there are any changes.

Nobody claimed the ticket a year later and it went to the state. Oh well. Odds are it was mine, or some other sh!thead like me who didn’t.

Just got back from the gas station about 30 minutes ago. Picked up 5 of them for tonight. Here’s to hoping I at least get 4 numbers right 🤞
