Nick Nolte was no angel.

The actor had his own inclinations, his own demons. But he thought Eddie Murphy was even worse off after he was dispatched from Los Angeles to New York to meet the fast-rising Saturday Night Live star for a possible collaboration in the 1982 two-hander 48 Hrs., released in theaters 40 years ago Thursday (12.8).

Nolte was sent to New York by Walter Hill, the director of The Getaway and Warriors who was fixing what Nolte calls a “terrible” original script that “did absolutely nothing” — ultimately re-crafting it into an edgy action comedy-drama about a grizzled police officer who teams up with a career criminal to track down a killer over a frenetic two-day span.

Nolte was playing the San Francisco cop, Jack Cates, and though Hill originally wanted Richard Pryor or Gregory Hines for the role of crook Reggie Hammond, the director’s girlfriend suggested her client, the red-hot SNL breakout Murphy, 20 years Nolte’s junior.

"I flew to New York, and I got to 48th Street, and I knew a Black saxophone player there. And I got up to his apartment, and in those days there was a white powdery substance running around that was abused badly, and I sat in that apartment for three days,” Nolte told us during a Role Recall interview (watch above, with 48 Hrs. starting at 1:12), clearly referring to cocaine.

“And I said to him finally, 'Hey man, I gotta get over to meet this guy at Saturday Night Live.' He said, 'The Black cat?' I said, 'Yeah.' He said, 'Oh, you can't use him. He's a base freak! You can't go near him.' I said, 'Oh, in that case, I'll go home then.'”

So Nolte flew back to L.A. and reported to Hill that Murphy was a “basehead,” or a crack addict.

Only he was wrong.

“You didn't meet him, did you?,” Hill asked him. “’That's the last time I'm sending you out.’”

Nolte was given bad intel from his saxophonist buddy. There was another Black actor who preceded Murphy on Saturday Night Live, Garrett Morris, who struggled with a "serious" drug problem during his years on SNL.

“Then I met Eddie when he came to California, and I saw why [Hill said that]. He was 18, very young guy, he didn't go near any substances,” Nolte said.

Nolte and Murphy — in his film debut — made a perfect team. 48 Hrs. became the seventh highest grossing movie of 1982, ushered in the era of the “buddy cop” movie and led to a 1990 sequel, Another 48 Hrs.

Still entertaining, though a little dated.

Great Movie.  Loved most of Eddie's early movies - Trading Places, 48 Hours, Beverly Hills Cop.  He had a great run back in the 80's.

Love that movie. Can still recite most of the lines by heart.  I bet I've watched that movie at least 30 times.

Couple of great bad guys.

The best gun sound effects I've ever heard to this day.

And the world's introduction to Mike Ementraut.

Took me a long time, frankly bar too long given the number of times I saw these movies, to realize the guy that plays Luther in 48 hours is the guy who plays Luther in commando. And that same marimba or whatever Jamaican theme that gets played in 48 hours is also the same song that gets played in commando.

And I remember reading a long time ago that I guess the guy that plays Luther and the guy that plays games we're both in warriors together which was directed by the same director for the other movies. Hill?

Scene in the hotel lobby was one of those strap yourself in kind of moments.
