As they open the door, he seems to be holding on to the hammer (probably to keep Depape from striking him with it). I don't think he was in a position to run away, particularly given his age.

I didn’t say it doesn’t happen, but more often than not it doesn’t, so I don’t see how there’s any evidence in this video that that’s what was happening. Like I said, the only odd thing is him holding a drink, but it seems clear he was trying to stay calm until the police arrived.
