I leave open the possibility Pelosi was smiling out of great relief the cops arrived to diffuse the situation.  Why Depape was smiling I don't know but perhaps because he knew he was going to achieve a bucket list item of finally getting fame when he bounced that hammer off of Pelosi's skull.  This is all wild speculation, of course, but I offer it to leave the door cracked open to alternative interpretations.

Fat guy was obviously the contractor working on the Pelosi's house.  Notice the masking tape on the windows as evidence.  And that's why he had the hammer.  Fat guy wasn't breaking in on the video showing him hitting the house with a hammer and crawling around.  He was fixing shìt. 

Paul fell in love with the contractor, but the contractor wanted to keep working.  That's why they were both holding the hammer.  Fat guy ended up attacking pelosi because he just wanted him out of the way to get his work done.

I think DePape was smiling because he wanted the cops to think everything was good. I couldn’t tell if Pelosi was smiling, but yes if he was I would think it would be because the cops had arrived
