The press versus the president - Looking back on the coverage of Trump and how the press eagerly lied about Russiagate

Recommended Posts

Pulitzer-winning reporter Jeff Gerth, formerly of NYT, has published an "encyclopedic look" at US media's Russiagate coverage in the Columbia Journalism Review.

This is a good read for lefty geeks who still believe Russia changed the 2016 election and that the legacy media has any credibility left. Polls show a majority of Democrats believe that Trump colluded with Russia and, they have the highest trust in media.

It’s telling how many journalists refused to comment. The author is a veteran mainstream journalist writing for the Columbia Journalism Review: the mainstream of mainstream sources. They simply refuse to be subjected to the same "accountability" they pompously demand of others.

I look forward to reading it. I’m sure that there were plenty of mistakes made that weren’t realized at the time, ambitious reporters eager to make a name for themselves, etc. Should be an interesting read.

However, the introduction at least doesn’t support your interpretation that the media “eagerly lied”; that’s just spin.

ok read the first two parts. Very well written- the reporter, who is very highly respected, really tries to be fair to all sides, including Trump, the media, and all of the “players”.

With regard to the media they certainly deserve, in retrospect, much criticism for exaggerating stories, for confusing sarcastic statements by Trump with serious intent, for wanting to find wrongdoing more than actually finding it. There is nothing new in any of this; if you study American journalism over the past 100 years these flaws are endlessly repeated. Yet it remains, IMO, excellent journalism.

But the OP’s assertion that the press “eagerly lied” is missing. The phrase “eagerly lied” means to deliberately, knowingly tell falsehoods with intent. And at least halfway through there doesn’t appear to be any evidence of that. Mistakes, no matter how awful, are not the same as deliberate falsehoods. I believe the author of this brilliant piece, Jeff Gertz, would be quite disapproving of the OP’s description of it.

THEY F'N DELIBERATELY LIED, TIM!

You still can't believe your beloved media lied to you.  Unbelievable.  Proof right there and you still blindly defend them.  You're exactly the reason they can continue to get away with lying.

They are supposed to be journalists Tim. Bob Woodward called the dossier a “garbage document”!! Why did all of them decline to comment?

Adam Schiff lied about it.  Eagerly. He should be brought up on charges.

Treason.  If found guilty, should face the firing squad.

You guys all want it to be lies so it’s lies, despite the actual article- did most of you even read it?

Adam Schiff could have used his words better on a few occasions, but he didn’t lie either.

Sorry but most of you guys have a warped view of what actually happened, based far more on your preheld convictions than on reality. Trump’s connection with Russia was much more tenuous than what the media supposed, but Trump is the main guy to blame for that for continually obstructing justice during the Mueller probe. That were the real crimes and Donald Trump should have been impeached and removed from office directly after the Mueller Report was released.

An honest review by the Columbia Journalism review, which is far from Conservative, shows how the media and Dems colluded to create fake narratives to try to destroy Trump which further eroded our trust in our institutions. Coming after highly cited Hamilton 68 Russiagate tracker exposed as a total hoax. Sh!tlib Tim, part of the 26% that thinks the media has any credibility left, says they made a few mistakes.

Your conclusions don’t match what the review says. There’s no evidence whatsoever that “the media and the Dems colluded to create false narratives”. That’s YOUR assumption, not that of Jeff Gertz.

Um yes it does plainly but your blind loyalty to the legacy media has turned you into a retarded person along with the other 26% that think the media has any credibility. Carry on with your false realities.

As an aside I always find it ironic when I’m criticized for being a fan of the “legacy media”, because my main sources of news, the Washington Post and the New York Times, have only come available to me in recent years thanks to my iPhone and the internet. I never read them when they were physically newspapers.

I think the media is redeemable.

They need to pull back on the propaganda, stop shooting for ratings....  and most importantly, stop shilling for political parties....

For now.  They just need to pull back and stop being the cheerleaders for political gamesmanship, return to journalism, maybe set aside the opinion journalism on a separate channel or time, if people want to ingest that they will go watch it, and people who simply want news can get that....

In 2017, the dean of American journalists, Bob Woodward, went on TV and said the steel dossier was garbage. He was silenced. The only place he said that on TV was Fox News.

Disheartening to say the least. We should all be outraged, no matter what side of the aisle you're on. Major players heads should roll, in government and media.

I won't hold my breath.

I actually find it refreshing to be in a new discussion forum (new for me that is) in which posts like this are allowed without the threat of suspension. Because it’s better, IMO, to expose your foolishness than attempt to hide or punish you. Every time you post something like this you demonstrate your own inability to have any kind of real conversation or debate, which means that when you make your ridiculous proclamations in the future, very few people are ever going to take you seriously. And that suits me just fine.

You shouldn’t. It’s hard to find actual wrongdoing, so no heads should roll. I also don’t see the need for outrage since it’s difficult to find any deliberate malfeasance.

Sure was. He didn’t mention it on the other networks. I don’t think he mentioned it at all. Maybe he silenced himself. He sure as hell wasn’t pounding the desk.

Of course, of course, you have to say it's a mistake because beside being a pathological liar you gobbled and sucked up everything they fed you just like you do your male prostitute's c0ck when you go to the east side.   Gobble, gobble, suck and then lie about it.

Pfffft.  That’s all you got? There’s no direct evidence that Joe Biden benefitted from Hunters overseas business dealings. He just said he never spoke to Hunter about them numerous times because he loves his son. You do know that his other son died, right ? What’s the matter with you?

I forgot about that. He said that was in front of a building that didn’t exist at the time, right? Funny it took him until 2012 to be in support of gay marriage though.  It must have slipped his mind because he was busy raising his kids to be such fine people.
