Maryland school district educates kids on 'speciesism,’ oppression against plants, as part of BLM curriculum

Recommended Posts

Speciesism is one of 13 'types of oppression,' including racism, sexism, classism, and adultism

A Maryland school district is educating students about "speciesism," which includes the oppression against plants as part of a lesson plan linked to Black Lives Matter.

Teachers in Howard County Public School System [HCPSS] were instructed to assign students a "Privilege or Oppressed? Worksheet."

The worksheet prompts students to identify "the places where they enjoy privilege and places where their status causes them to lack privilege."

This type of oppression is illustrated through a chart that breaks down how each type of oppression is manifested such as the variable involved, the non-target groups, and the target groups. In the case of speciesism, the variable involved is species, and the non-target group is humans, per the chart outlined in the worksheet. The targeted group is animals, plants, and flora.

The worksheet is derived from a lesson plan that appears to have connections to the Black Lives Matter movement, per documents obtained by Parents Defending Education (PDE).

PDE obtained documents showing details of the HCPSS lesson plan, which explicitly has a "Black Lives Matter" banner at the top of the "lesson" titled "Diversity and Globalism: Secondary Social Studies Community."

The Diversity and Globalism lesson plan instructs the teacher that the prerequisite for students to understand globalism is first comprehending privilege and understanding structural inequities. One of the learning objectives includes that "I understand and can advocate for the principles of Black Lives Matter."

Furthermore, the lesson plan directs teachers to "point out that people who benefit from privilege are unaware of the existence of the benefits they receive through their status."

Black Lives Matter at School is a "national coalition organizing for racial justice in education," according to the website. The four national demands of the organization will "begin to insure [sic] safety and equity in our schools."

"BLM is an explicitly ideological and political movement that supports the Muslim Brotherhood, seeks to disrupt the western nuclear family, and instructs students to be queer affirming and trans affirming," Parents Defending Education Director of Outreach Erika Sanzi told Fox News Digital. "Instruction about racial injustice and black excellence, whether through literature, historical narrative or current events, is essential but the BLM Week of Action materials are not that—instead they are an attempt to indoctrinate children into supporting a movement that they don't understand."

Once upon a time, when I was stupid, in my college days before meeting my far right Michelle Malkin-like Asian wife, which I highly recommend, get yours today, once upon a time I dated had an interest in dating a chick that was so into vegetarianism and veganism that she would only eat fruits and vegetables that didn't kill the plant when harvested. So, like potatoes and carrots were right out since those are the roots of the plants. No, I am not joking.... I am not creative enough to dream up this level of crazy. These people really exist.

Poor potato. :(

How exhausting......  the search for oppression goes on I guess.  I do like the creativity.  Just wish it were being applied to real problems.

If I meet someone that went to public school recently I’m going to assume they have been miseducated and their parents didn’t care enough to do something about it.

Yeah, of course, there was an attraction there. She was what I liked. And she seemed smart too, at least inso far as her questions and contributions in British literature class were valid and on point.

Michelle is 90% Filipina/10% Chinese.

My wife on the other hand considers herself 75% Han Chinese with 25% Hui minority ethnicity (China is mostly Han Chinese but also recognizes/consists of 56 ethnic minorities that the Han have absorbed over seven millennia.)

----------

Politically my wife is significantly further right than I am, more readily identified in the CDub100/iam90sbaby territory.  That, together with being Asian (and gorgeous), is what brings up the Malkin comparison.

I hope for your sake that your wife is not really like Michelle Malkin, who is a truly awful, hateful and despicable human being.

Does she hate gays as much as you?  Is it a religious thing or just regular hatred of being different?

To be fair, you aren't liked for many reasons. The gay is just bonus.

No. Because following 9/11 she wrote a book calling for the forced internment of all Muslim Americans and arguing that the internment of the Japanese Americans during World War II was a good thing. The book was called “In Defense of Internment” and it was a vile, bigoted piece of trash. She deserves to rot in hell.

She seems to have struck a strong cord with you.  While I disagree with her stances I try to keep my disagreement in check sufficiently to address the stances before the person.  I understand that can be difficult and I am not always able to do so myself.

I guess it depends on the stance. To me what she did put her permanently beyond the pale.

Baltimore is in Maryland. Kids In Baltimore can’t read anywhere near grade level yet they still move on to the next grade.

I think you have Michelle Malkin pegged incorrectly. So far as I can tell, Malkin just appreciates the history, culture, philosophical underpinnings, and values of the US while seeing through the constant white bashing and white shaming of the left. She appreciates and embraces the vision the founders had for the country. If there is any awful, hateful, or despicable things she's written I'm not aware of it.

I do think that she is fed up with the cultural left and has given up hope of ever reaching accords with them. I've heard her quote Rodney King "Can't we call just get along?" Now Rodney King is a flawed messenger, but especially after what he's been through, I find inspiration, wisdom and hope in that question rather than bitterness. Whereas I'd like to reach out a hand to Rodney to find a way to "Yes." Malkin does not, she has totally given up on the left and says "No."  I think that encapsulates my difference with her.

But she is frustrated with the mainstream right too. She fires plenty of salvos at mainstream conservative movement who she labels as "Conservative Inc." Included in "Conservative Inc" are a lot of right wing voices I appreciate such as Ben Shapiro, Ron DeSantis, Turning Points USA, etc.

As for my wife, she is always to my right on every position, except maybe abortion where we are both moderates. She's even embraced 2nd amendment issues even though she's never seen/used a gun in her life. She knows plenty of stories about how small 100 lb. Asian women (like her) seem to attract criminals in big leftoid cities as they wait in a subway station and she'd go Bernard Goetz on the fockers if it happens to her.
